Help on cleaning Skyways
« on: April 16, 2006, 08:19 PM »
Right guys, got some yellow tuffs that have got dirt and grime really ingrained into them.
Tried soap filled brillo pads and wet n' dry sandpaper but it's not really shifting it. :(
Was going to possibly try and soak them in bleach but a bit worried that they might lighten them rather than clean!!??
Any other tips???

If you soaked them in bleach for a couple of weeks you could always re-dye them afterwards. You have to scrub and scrub and scrub like a MO FO to get them clean with brillo but it DOES work.
I bleached my white tuffs for 3 weeks and it cleaned them very nicely.Re-dye them.
Oh  and if you bleach them, you will have to polish up the hubs afterwards if they are alloy versions.

Here's the state of my yellow Tuffs when I got them

After bleaching (paler than it appears in the pic) but clean as a whistle

The one in the back has been bleached only, the one in the front has been bleached and dyed.

If you smother the alloy hub in grease before bleaching they don't go black.

Get yourself over to http://www.raleighburner.com and check out the 'How to' section. There's extensive info on both bleaching and dyeing Skyways and other mags.

i also did a how to with my blue ones....you may have to use our search button to find it, as it was some time ago, but dyeing on coloured tuffs works. period. it doesnt rub off from the brake blocks, or wash off with water, use dylon, as harris said, when i did my blues ones i used 5 pots of dye, 2kg salt, and boiling water.....out of the kettle and four pots on the stove, just enough water to cover the wheels, left em in the potion for about an hour....stir it constantly for the first ten mins, then give it a whizz every ten mins after, just to stop the dye from separating.

i have some before and after shots...i'll post em up

good luck

Dave
haro, how do you do

also if the dirt is ingrained then just bleach em....it will not take the colour out, but will remove the grime.

hope this helps

Dave,
How long did you soak in bleach for and what water/bleach mix ratio did you use??

loads of bleach. neat,or just top it up till its over the wheels, but its not great for the hubs, so grease em up or try to protect them, i have used clingfilm, which seemed ok.

leave them in for as long as you want. i left them in for two weeks.
