TO ME ! the most iconic bmx "FINISHED"
« on: February 22, 2010, 06:58 AM »
when i was a kid my 1st bike was a raleigh GS burner  """ thats all my parents could afford """ . but i longed for a bmx with skyways on so they said next year i could have one . so for a year i had to pass our local bmx shop called  "ritchies" and only drool over this bike  . so to me i think its the most iconic bike of the 80,s even my nana knows what a tuff burner is

its in a bit of a mess at the minute

We all know that'll look like a spanker in a week or two!!

Only frame I ever broke was a mark 1 burner!! do you reckon they'd still honour the guarantee? (was it lifetime or just 25 years?)

I will be watching with interest!!

Got to agree with you, certainly in the UK anyway  :daumenhoch:

Even the guys here at work who know feck all about bikes know what a Raleigh Tuff Burner is and what it looks like  :LolLolLolLol:

It was the first BMX I can remember really wanting (got an Ammaco Team Special from my parents instead  ::) ) hence why I built my own version a couple of years ago.

The iconic Mk1 TUFF Burner  :Great_Britain:

Okay Neil... here's some spec stuff for you.

Released in 1982.

This is the brochure picture from the 1983 Raleigh Action Bikes Brochure.

(Take no notice of the chainring on this one, I have never seen ONE example fitted with this type, it is thought they were used for Brochure photo's ONLY!, Raleigh tended to do that alot..).
Remember Raleigh were late into the BMX scene and these initial models in 82' were rushed onto the market place... a fact that was clear in both Frame Design & Build  :buck2:

This is the brochure picture from the early 83 Brochure...

This is the spec you need to be following. (text taken from Brochure)

Frame: HIGH TENSILE / TIG WELDED / FLAME RED OR BLAZE BLUE
Forks: HIGH TENSILE / TIG WELDED / MATT BLACK
Bars: HIGH TENSILE / V-BAR / MATT BLACK
Stem: SAKAE ALLOY / 4 BOLT BLACK
Headset: CHROME-STEEL BALL BEARINGS
Brakeset: ALL ALLOY / GOLD OR BLUE
Grips: BLACK FOAM GRIP & COLOURED CARTRIDGE / YELLOW OR BLUE
Saddle: RALEIGH-MX WITH SAFETY CLIP / RED OR BLUE
Seat Pin: HIGH TENSILE CHROME PLATED
Pedals: BLACK RAT-TRAP / STRENGTHENED AXLES
Crank: ONE-PIECE CRANK / HEAT TREATED / CHROME PLATED
Chainwheel: 40T HIGH TENSILE STEEL WITH DISC CHROME PLATED
Bottom Bracket: CHROME STEEL BALL BEARINGS
Chain: 88L X 1/2” X 1/8” / GOLD OR BLACK
Sprocket: 16T FREEWHEEL
Wheels: YELLOW SKYWAY TUFF II WHEELS
Tyres: 2.125 FRONT / 1.75 REAR / SNAKEBELLY GUMWALL / YELLOW OR BLUE
Padset: 3 PADS / BLACK PRINT ON YELLOW VINYL
Weight: 14.3KG (31.5LB)

The early examples came with a Coaster Brake Tab welded on the rear chain stay
The catalogue stated that a  RED Tuff Burner was part of the Burner line-up but very few examples exist, and it is thought that these may have been put together by Raleigh dealers.

The Mk1 Tough/Tuff was renamed the Mag Burner when it lost its Skyway Tuff II’s in place of Simplex 7 spoke Mag Wheels.

Image from the late 1983 brochure... Mk1 Mag Burner.
