from what i can remember from speaking with rick the original idea to use ox tubing was not an overall weight saving thing but to give a better balance to a bmx frame. for all time bmx frames are front end heavy, hence why they drop to the headtube when sat on the bb. so in using the air hardened tubing a thinner gauge could be used but still maintaining the same strength, and as its the front end that has the air hardened tubing gave a better balance to the frame.

also making a frame completely of air hardened tubing the price would have been astronomical.

then other companies jumped on the band wagon, T1 were the next to use some form of hardened tube, then the likes of S&M, fit, fbm all jumped onboard. this started the weight saving mentallity then the lower end companies started producing weightless frames, not with hardened tubing but with thinner 4130 to keep weight down, but the strength of mid school was lost and the birth of new school had begun

was going to say last night that phil should do some more stuff on standard.
about frame info,i have had a few frames that didnt have decals and needed a little
investigation to find out what model it was.

laz thats cracking colour but it need building and riding to death matey .did u get the little ding sorted too ?

id love to read bit of history on standard and some pics of the frames they have released with years and details etc would be good read

the ding was sorted before a did the spray job  :daumenhoch:. though that pic really doesn't do the colour justice

standard history is stillin the process of being written. all i need for pics is nice one of an old lengthy frame (dan) then i'm set

At last, managed to grab some time Saturday afternoon to bring the bike out into the open and examine what 6 years in a damp shed can do to a piece of metal! Bike is now stripped and back at mine. Here's what I found; excuse any mid-skool ignorance...

STANDARD STA 500 frame: 21" TT. Serial # 'M99017'. Powder coated in Baby Blue with no decals. Heavy as a tank with no dents/dings, but plenty of scratches, blistered paint and surface corrosion.

S&M PITCHFORK's: Black and completely unmarked.

Unknown make of bars: Chrome with small Mongoose decal?

SNAFU grips and alloy end plugs: Grey, torn and disintegrated. Now binned.

PRIMO Casket stem: Decent condition.

ALEX Supra-E rims: Front lightly corroded, rear heavily corroded with buckle.

SNAFU Rimjobs: 2.125/1.95. As new, but inner tubes completely degraded.

Hubs: Good condition, marked - 'MISSION'.

T1 Pegs: Heavily corroded and crumbling. Now binned.

XPOSURE sprocket 44T with 1/2 grind disc: Lightly corroded.

HARO Fusion 1pc crank: Crome. Heavily corroded.

KMC Heavy Duty chain: Dry.

DMR V8 pedals: Badly scored and corroded.

Dia-Compe AD990: Rear, Silver and fine.
Dia-Tech DIRT HARRY lever: Black and unmarked.

PRIMO Pentagon seat: Grey and Black. 1 small tear and lightly stained.
Unknown make of seatpost and clamp: Silver/Black. Lightly corroded.

Still not sure whether to resurrect this back into a regular ride or sell on to help fund a Cruiser and OS rebuild...

Thought I'd just be able to bang them straight in this post easily. I'm really sh*t at this sort of stuff. Will try again tomorrow when I've got a clear head...*

Cheers guys. I remembered why I bought it in the first place whilst I was stripping it down.  :)

It will definitely be going to someone for a fresh powder coat that's for sure...
