Polishing advice needed
« on: December 15, 2005, 09:54 AM »
Need some polishing advice guys

I have got a 6" bench grinder at home and I have been stripping a few parts and now want to start polishing some alloy cranks, stems etc. I have been looking about for the equipment and have a few questions:

1) Do the 6" mops fit straight onto the bench grinder axle or do I need something else as I have seen some tapered spindles for sale?
2) There appears to be a lot of different mops available such as sisal, calico etc and different compounds. Do I need all these or can I rationalise a bit (say 2 different ones). In what order should I use them
3) Do you just spread the polishing compound onto the part and then polish away!?

Cheers fellas  :santa_afro:

Hi m8... thats a coincidence. Im trying to find info on this too
I think the mops are for use on a drill rather than a grinder but i may be wrong. I have had my eye on a set from ebay.

they do larger kits too.

put the paste onto the mop, not the part to be polished. not too much either, or it will clog your mop. if this happens a wire brush usually sorts it.

work your way through the grades of paste. tapered spindles help prevent the mop from slipping.
they are only material with leather reinforcement.
