wheel advice and suggestions please?
« on: March 05, 2007, 06:02 PM »
i'm building this old dog up for a retro trails ride, its cost me sod all apart from the powder and the seat, most of it was given free or 99p off ebay,

i'm stuck on the wheels though, what would be a classic pair of mid school wheels?
would all black be too new school?

are tnt hubs any good?

i was thinking odyssey pro-factor or sun superstocks but they both seem a bit of a cop out, so any ideas would be greatly appreciated

tyres and grips too!

I run Derringer hubs and they spin so sweetly it's untrue. I have laced up onto Odyssey T1000 rims but they are becoming super rare. amcycles in the states are selling a mixed colour pair for $160.

peregrines would be perfect on it but they seem to get snapped up for hoffman and haro resto's!

would early sun bfrs on the derringer hubs work?

my budget for the wheels isnt much so i'll have to lace them up, what would be a cheap and unpopular wheelset?

would all black primo v- monsters be too new school?

would maxxis maxdaddies be to new?

thanks for the advice like!

Very nice. I got a seat just like that in the post today.

Black V monsters would be fine, just not really trails. Cant go wrong with Comp 3s (just check out Moellers arm tat!). I cant really tell you about wheels, but I will be watching what people suggest. I was super pros all the way for the whole of the 90s. Now Ive got a few race/trails builds and Im not really sure what wheels to use.

Are the bars Castillos? Nice, but might be better with slams: THE dirt bars.

Great bike tho. I rode a dark blue frame just like that for ages. I just thickened up the drop outs for pegs.

i was the same with wheels back then dude! 48's all the way, usually georges, i've still got an old green homer sitting here now!
so likewise i'm a bit stuck with the wheels!

was the seat from bykestore? mine was a tad pricey but the guy actually made a video of some other parts he was selling!  and to be fair these seats are like hens teeth now, most got ripped up and smashed, did you ever find the small logo seat with all the little s&m shields on?
sorry about my mistake with the tyres, i meant dirt-monsters and typed v-monsters!
i really want to use all black dirt monsters but are they too new?
would the skinwalls be better?

the comp3's would normally be my first choice but i cant really afford the correct period ones for it, i have found some old comp3 grips so....
the headset is a solidbikes needle bearing, is it too new school, what should it have?

i used the castillo's really because they were free and they place the bike firmly in the nineties,
but i totally see what you mean about the slams, they would look so much better, if i keep it when its finished i might change the ad's to slams,

grips?
thanks again for the advice

Beautiful ......
UGP Kung fu grips (yellow) or old ODI's would look real nice.
Ultimatly old primo hubs would look neat.

Yes, I got my seat from bykestore. Mark, and his videos rule!

Grips have got to be ODI longnecks, or maybe roughnecks (I prefered them). Black walled comp 3s will be fine for a 90s bike.

Oh, and if you see a little sheild seat, anywhere .... its MINE!

I say go with the sun rims and deffenitly the TNT hubs.  go black rims and hubs with yellow Primo spokes. I know the yellow spokes aren't really "era" correct but just look and see how the spokes will set it off:

besides anyone could have painted or powdered spokes bitd. I've seen it!
grips: gotta say Odi Longnecks or Ati Pistol Pete's and really I think I would go with black ones.
tires: definitly N/S black wall comp III's or mabe the Max Daddys. afterall you did say you were gonna ride it right?
one last thing: get a black sprocket and then that thing is gonna POP!
I am really digging this project! espically the powdered cranks.
