Vintage road bike crossovers???
« on: January 03, 2013, 10:25 PM »
A good mate of mine is well into his vintage road/race/touring bikes and regularly comes across cranks, seat etc for sale.
What are the general parts that cross over into bmx, such as shimano 600 cranks, brooks colt seats etc?
Sixteen thirty-two. What is that? A year?   No, it's your top score on Pole Position.

Hubs are easily converted to BMX use, so are cranks.  I have used Campagnolo, Sanshin, Ofmega etc etc.

I love looking through the old race/track onlne stores when building a 70's bike.

Always drawn to Campag stuff, some of their hubs are lovely  :smitten:
What about Campag head sets? do they fit as a rule?

Thought about picking up a cheap frameset to ride to work on as my mate has a few lovely lugged sets but the frame sizes, thread sizes, wheel sizes etc are pretty confusing if you are not used to it.... even before you get into the differences from country to country  :crazy2:

There is a vintage bike show/meet/sale twice a year in Ripley, I went a few years ago & picked up some BMX stuff for silly money, seats £5, lots of 90s pegs etc for £2. I must try & go again, everyone there was only interested in road bikes.

Be careful buying 1" threaded headsets

Road bike ones are for a 30mm frame inner diameter ,, whereas most O/S BMX are 32.5 mm

So I wouldn't expect an old roadie Campag one to fit unless it's going on a Piranha  :Great_Britain: ( skinnier size headtube )

Some  of the old roadie stuff like cranks shouldn't go on BMX builds after 1981 in my opinion ,,

,as there was many bike companies producing  BMX specific components  by then.

But lots of racers and Pros still ran road bike  hubs much later  :)    :daumenhoch:

I have just done a search on vintage cycle jumble. And there is loads of links. There looks like a big one soon in Manchester near the new BMX track.  :daumenhoch:

Yeah i've been to that jumble, its pretty big and suffers for it as alot of the big roady players turn up and few bargains are to be had  :'(

There are plenty of local/regional ones though on pub car parks/ church halls etc where you can get some good stuff and the odd bmx part too  :daumenhoch:

You just need to know what will crossover to bmx, hence this thread.

My mate own a shop in hebden bridge and has picked up a few gems from a local bike recycling centre. I had a look last time we met for a pint and its a racers goldmine but all they had bmx wise was a modern set of white skyways nailed to a wall for novelty value  ::)

Like Sean said, hubs and cranks are the 2 main parts that can be used / converted. The hardest thing is dating them, unless you know the codes/stamps and the model you could be looking at something from the 50s /60's.
WANTED....FRED BLOOD QUADANGLE FRAME..
