Cleaning up the wheels
« on: August 03, 2011, 08:27 PM »
Been workin some days on them now.
Redoing the sides, unlacing, cleaning
and handpolishing every spoke and nipple   :coolsmiley:  :buck2:
Luckily no flats and hops, relacing them went smooth.

They have some tiny shelfwear like scatches on the blue
but it was to nice to de-anno.
Screw NOS  :D
I guess next time I wont be quick to trow away them spokes and nipples...

Looks spot on  :daumenhoch:

I found a real lazy way of spoke cleaning (although you have to delace first as the reaction with aluminium ain't so good): take the spokes and nips and pop in a strong solution of soda crystals for a couple of hours - works a treat on gack (not so good on rust though).

Yep, I always try and save the spokes from my wheels when I strip them down - sometimes they are too far gone, but most of the time I can give them a clean with wire wool and lemon juice or Jif / Cif whatever..... usually the nipples are shagged if they've been tightened with a gun so I replace them as i ride all my wheels, but the spokes I', happy to re-use unless thay're too far gone.

Much more satifying to do the resto yourself and re-lace them. Nice work Yannick :daumenhoch:
Still limping......

Thanks!
I did delace them.
Did every spoke with steelwool and peek, straighten some bend spokes
and afterwards polishing them with something like that Gothard cloth Bendy talks about.
Something primitive called Abrasso... been laying around my parents house from god knows what decennium  ;D
Well, next time I'm going to try that bath for sure   :D
Nipples where still in great condition. Just gave them a rub with the leftover woolies from the spokes. Lucky I guess.
