Skyway Hub removal
«

I ned to remove the hub from my Skyways to clean them - I hope to replace the whole thing with some new parts, including the 5 sided plate and the 5 bolts that run through the wheel. Does anyone have any advise on how to remove it?
Thanks
Neil

i think u have to drill out the rivets, and replace with bolts. you should be able to clean them reasonably well with the hubs stil in tho....

lol...
I have the guide that was in one of the BMX mags in 1983 here somewhere.
Will have a hunt
but the long and short of it is, drill out the rivet at trhe end with a little dimple in it, then push the pins out when the heads fall off and your away.
I dont recon you should do it unless you have to as they look way better with the original pins then nuts and bolts.
Oh, take the freewhell off before anything else as you will struggle if you dont.

I did this BITD when I was 14 with my Dad's Black and Decker and a blunt drill bit. Made a right mess when it kept skidding off the rivet. I'd agree, not worth the hassle and looks better with rivets than bolts....

wot he ses. the pins do look better, and the bolts may come loose. certainly looser than rivets. i cleaned up a set of alloy hubbed ones, with a bit of elbow grease and a jet washer they came as good as new ...in fact better, without removing the hubs.

Toothbrush inside the hub with a wee bit of white spirit can work wonders too, gets rid of all that dried up shite and poo poo

I wouldn't be removing a hub just to clean behind it.
I removed the bearings and spindles on mine, stuck the wheel in the dishwasher and they came out mint! Bolted on hubs don't look cool, functional but not cool.
