OGK mag sealed bearing conversion
« on: January 17, 2015, 07:09 PM »
Bought me a set of OGKs for the Trickfox and decided to strip and rebuild them (as you do.........)  Found a bit of a mess.........

Rather than scrap them I had a mooch on the museum and saw that a few people had converted Peregrine and GT hubs from loose ball to sealed bearing so decided to give it a go.

First step is to remove the old cups – all I can say is what a twat of a job.  They are pressed in, made of hardened steel and were seized that solid that I resorted to a Dremel, diamond cutter and a lot of patience.  You have to be careful as it’s easy to damage the alloy hub casing.  I weakened the cup by making lots of little cuts then smashed the fook out of it from behind (Oooooer Mrs) till it dropped out.

I polished the inside of the hub to make fitting the bearings easier.  The marks you can see that look like cracks are not.  They are where the original hardened cups had worn into the softer alloy.

Next step was to measure and order the bearings – 3/8 x 1” 1/8 x 3/8 - £5.00 each

 http://simplybearings.co.uk/shop/Bearings-Cycle+Bearings/c3_5227/p20000278/ENDURO+16142RS+Rubber+Sealed+Deep+Groove+Ball+Bearing+3/8x1-1/8x3/8+inch/product_info.html

Brummie Dave sorted me out with a Peregrine axle kit.  Turns out I couldn’t use it as the axle itself is 3/8, but the collars for the bearings are 10mm and my bearing measured 9.53 i/d.  I improvised and cut a 68.5mm length of 10mm tube to act as a spacer much like a modern BB.  (Needs to be fairly accurate as it will not lock against the bearing inner race otherwise and will flap around doing bugger all)

I threw the bearings in the freezer for a couple of days and propped the hub against the radiator and they pressed in without too much mither.  Non drive side was a bit tighter, but nothing a few decent tickles with a mallet didn’t sort out.

All that was left was to assemble them using the hardware from the Peregrine axle kit and a random ebay axle that I had knocking about, check they spin properly, fit the freewheel and get them on the bike.

Job done.  Wine now being drunk.

Ace job there Bert, can't beat a bit of home engineering  :4_17_5:
Sixteen thirty-two. What is that? A year?   No, it's your top score on Pole Position.

I enjoy the tinkering side of things more than building bikes lego fashion out of a load of pretty bits.......  I'm done with building carpet tarts, i'd rather resurrect a wreck ;)

You've got the same problem then? In any case, that was a good read and well worth a thread bump! :daumenhoch:

I will know for sure when I have the mags in my hands, I am expecting this to be the case though. This seems to be a nice little upgrade if you are going to do a rebuild anyway.

I will update you with the plan soon  fistblump

I didn't need to go through with the upgrade. The races and cones were very clean, I had some new bearings of the same size laying around so I popped them in for good measure. A lot less work and they are spinning sweet now. I just need to sort the spacing out when the time comes to fit them. They look like shit but run like a dream, just what I wanted.

I have bookmarked this thread for future reference, if the need arises.
