Is there any appetite for it for next year. I thought we had a cracking series running for 2 years and then it all fell to shit.
I'll put my hands up and admit I didn't race much this year but even if I had I would have raced against nobody else.
We really need to boost the numbers for next year I think and really get back to the good old days of 2 gates at least per race meeting.
-
Agreed, but no ones interested. I didnt have a car, I do now though :daumenhoch:
as long as the car has no lugs and 1" threaded forks you will be ok dude :LolLolLolLol:
-
Im up for it, would be cool to see it back up and running
-
I think it needs someone , like a Moley type person to keep the interest going. I think the north is kept its popularity because a thread goes up on here with the riders that are going to pitch up and that creates more interest. I'm sure that if any newcomers look at the Preston old school thread and see there is going to be loads of old schoolers down there to look after them they would be more inclined to pitch up.
There is nothing worse than turning up at a meeting with no one to race or only two or three of you.
-
im always up for a bit of fun
-
I think there are a few reasons why the decline in the south happened.
1. Riders improved and moved to different (proper) classes. Which is what the OS class should do. When riders regain or acquire new skills to compete against better riders then its only right that they should step up to continue their learning curve.
2. The South's OS class wasn't a regional meeting. It was spread out over 3 different series/meets (I think). Now that its Officially attached to regionals it might restrict the numbers of riders due to extra travelling costs to make all of the meets.
3. I think if Tony didn't have any health problems then the series would still be going strong as he was the main rider giving the series its impetus and drive. Hopefully now that he's back riding and with the likes of Glen (who's always eager to ride) then the OS down south can attract the numbers it had 2 summers ago.
I think the main reason the North is doing well is the video footage. It makes racing more fun when you can see yourself racing (even if you fall off).
The OS needs to keep attracting new blood as riders leave to do other classes. The video footage shows that even the worst riders can get around a track and will give those viewers who are thinking of racing that extra nudge to race.
The whole point of the OS is to get the older riders back on the track and have some fun. The only problem is getting people on the track for that important first race. Once they are on track and lined up on that start gate they'll discover how much fun it is. OS sells itself. If you've raced once then you'll race again.
The Northern Winter Series is good too. No BCF fees or license. Hopefully the newbies at Preston will get hooked before the shitty weather comes.
People always look for excuses not to race. No bike, Not fit enough etc, etc. Dont give them a choice not to race. As soon as someone shows an interest then dont let them go. If they dont have a bike then get them a loaner to race on. Once they've raced once then they'll come back for more.
The other upshot of OS is that you'll probably end up dragging the rest of your family into the sport too. Look at Imogen Hill (British Champion).
I expect to see 30+ riders racing OS at next years Brits!! :daumenhoch:
-
Nice one Glen!! :daumenhoch:
You should give the Beemer a thorough testing by driving up to Preston!!! ;)
-

My ears are burning :D
Oh yer and Moley will lend even the worst rider a bike :daumenhoch:

I even pump the tires up too!! :daumenhoch:

You scare me!! :'(

I havnt raced all summer, infact I have hardley ridden a bike at all. I recently started thinking about the OSS and how much fun we had for two years, and that got me thinking about riding again. I was going to start racing Braintree in their winter series on my shiney new cruiser, but if we could get a few of us back for the old school, I would be game.

lol :2funny:

I've missed racing with my mates in old school.
I just want to race with my mates and not take it too seriously.

thats what makes the north os class so big.......its all about having a laugh and taking thge p1ss out of each other :daumenhoch:
-
I plan on racing an Aero Pro next year in old school as well. Proper old school from '84 ;)

im always up for it..... was fun racing the Brits really got the juices flowing for OS again...
-
We could run it with the regional series but I think it would be nice to also include the Hersden rounds into the series as well and we have had some classic racing at the little track.
It would definitely be nice to have an independent series running for the old school so that we can inject some fun and camaraderie back into the racing.
-
I want to start racing in the South Oss next year. Ive got my Kuwi to race on but have never raced other than at MK this year so what Im saying is I would be proper crap but up for a spin!
-
That's what the OSS is all about Ben, it doesn't matter how crap or good you are it's about getting out on your bike and having a laugh.
-
until the gate drops of course.....
-

Yep!! Everyone starts crap!!
And after 2 years you'll still be crap but not quite as much plus you'll be slightly fitter too!! :D
-
Tony spoke to Kenny just recently about a revival and needing to get back to the way things were, especially a return to a strong OS class in the South.
There's a fair few who are looking to ride, list i can work out so far
Kev Carlin
Kev Riviere
Ratty
Zippy
Hooga
Crooch
Glen
Kaner
Billstup (when he can stay in 1 pce :LolLolLolLol: )
medaved
Spike
Mr Magoo
Maybe Gary72, Quadpaul, Mike et all can be persuaded to come back from the dark side too :daumenhoch:
Maybe it could be run alongside the South winter series and Hersden, taking your best say 5 results etc so that people dont have to commit to all the rounds as in todays financial climate it's a squeeze for everyone.
I wouldn't suggest that it's run the way it has been in the past where fees are paid as people have licences/memberships to pay for, however, we have a few trophies here, which could be used for 1st, 2nd, 3rd
The south region have a meeting soon to announce dates, i think Hersdens may allready be out so i'll speak to Tone in the morning to see what he thinks :daumenhoch:
-
Me & Faze 7 Dave raced a round of last year's Southern Winter Series, and really enjoyed it. We're not seroius racers and don't want to get all of the British Cycling stuff, which is why we didn't race any summer series events.
Just turn up, pay and race suits us - so we'll be back for some more winter races (the rounds in and near London).
We'd have done a few races in the summer if they had been like that - we're just in it for fun. I got the feeling most of the guys at MK09 were the same when we raced there, and if you can get that into the Southern series racing, you must get more interest ?
-
Right, we just spoke to TK and there is only 1 round planned in the Winter on 10th October :(
Tone was just saying if we follow the South series once the dates are announced and run with their min number of rounds to qualify for a ranking/plate etc and then put Hersden as a double points round to bump up attendance there :daumenhoch:
Also, is there anything actually stopping the old school turning up at a track not being used on that day, no gate, just 1 footed, riders ready, pedals ready, GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO and using that as an additional round :daumenhoch:
Sooooooooooo, if the south is 5 from 8, double points round at Hersden and a true o/s round at a track tba and use your best 7 from 9 to count :daumenhoch:
-
mrs ratty you forgot the main man mr magoo on your list more carnage for hersden thought that finished this year :2gunsfiring_v1: :2gunsfiring_v1: :LolLolLolLol:
-
And of course the UK No.3!!!! Who can forget him.....
-
I would love to see the OS racing revived in the South. Not cos I want to race it (my OS racing is probably limited to once a year at the Brits from now on), but cos I love seeing the older bikes being ridden instead of just polished and all of the riders are real characters and fun to talk to at the races.
As for the demise of the South region I think the main factors were Ratty and 796 falling out and Sam/Dan Wonfor moving back to EA and then moving up North (or wherever it is he's gone). For me, those 3 were the ones who got it started in the first place, so when they went different ways, the OS series also fragmented.
People who change their minds about what they want to race more often than they change their pants (e.g. Zippy & others ;) :LolLolLolLol: ) also contributed to numbers falling.
I also still think that OS should be that first step to getting back into BMX and once the good guys outgrow the class they should step up to new school not only for their own progression but so as not to discourage other comeback kings from trying old school. If I turned up after taking 20 years out of the sport and saw the likes of JT Smooth and Glen flying around the track I'd probably leave the bike in the car and just watch.
-

Did someone call my name :LolLolLolLol:

lee allen my hero :4_17_5:

i want to join in !
i aim try and get down to Andover this weekend for the southern champs, and should i have a bike ready by then, will want to go elbow to elbow with some of you!
then hopefully once i have a bike that is race worthy i'll be there to make up the back markers ;D
-
I'll try and make as many as possible, just to keep the numbers up ;D
-
This might sound complicated, but how about formula racing for all 30+ riders in the South region?
I would suggest 3 formulas that you would initially choose to ride in whatever you fancied. eg
Formula 1. For the serious guys who like to be pushed to their limits.
Formula 3. A good entry level for newcomers, old schoolers, and mainly just for fun and keeping fit.
Formula 2. This would be a stepping stone, plus you would get promoted to, or relegated to.
Any legs in this idea?
-
worth a go tony but it boils down to how many people will turn up and race old skool :daumenhoch:
i would love the old skool to get a decent turn out on a regular basis like it was a in previos years
-
Ill give Russ a bell, he maybe up for doing a few old school races
-
Make sure Glen films the action!!
OS tends to have more Berm action and crashes than the other classes!! :daumenhoch:
-
When you say south? where do you mean?
-
When you say south? where do you mean?
Dagenham, Peckham, Andover, Bournmouth, Brixton, Hersden, Hayes, Herne Bay, Bex hill.... Cant think of any more Im afraid :daumenhoch:
-
Shame way to south for me!!!!!!!
-
i'm up for it, might even make me give up smoking, when/where is the next race?
-
Some of us will be at Dagenham this Sunday, nice fun race and easier to break into, th week after is the 1st Winter Regional (at Gosport i think) and i know we're planning a road trip down there and will be trying to car pool if we can. PM either me or Ratty for info :daumenhoch:
-
yes, at dagenham
-
i'm up for it, might even make me give up smoking, when/where is the next race?
Get ya arse to daggers this sunday andy it'll be good to see you :daumenhoch: its just a club meet but we have some really good racing there in cruisers :daumenhoch:
-
I will be at Daggers on Sunday (on my cruiser, not old school though). Missed my weekly ride this week as I was busy unloading, stickering up then boxing up a shit load of Dialled Bikes mountain bike frames that went out today, so I'm gagging for a ride/race next weekend.
Also looking forward to the next PORC round Lee. Need to get a front brake and some new tyres though for my 4X bike though as it will be even more slippery in 2 weeks time and I don't want to end up in that lake at the bottom!

cheers Kev, thought you'd all forgotten me, just cos i'd forrgotten my password, which i remembered after re-registering :idiot2:, must be too many knocks to the head...
yeah i'm in, but dunno how much comittment i can give it, as life alot different to last year, but prefer my old skool to those poofy 24" unresponsive thingy's, that are fast but a bit boring to ride. :LolLolLolLol:
-
I'd have thought the changes you made in the past year would have made racing easier next year. ;)
-
would be if 4 year old daughter raced. and money wasn't so scarce :2gunsfiring_v1:
-
Didn't know you had a 4 year old daughter.
-
ive not told him yet zippy pmsl :LolLolLolLol:
