So last night we had a normal vert night down in Caterham and twas a cracking night as me and Trev had the whole place to ourselves :daumenhoch: So i started off with finally popping out on the 11ft vert and OMG i nearly shit a brick!!!! You have to get some proper speed up to even make it up to coping level. So after an hour of conquering my fear of heights i was close to pegging back in again (once i got over the shakes).
10pm came about so we decided to hit the street section and try and get those pesky disasters. It was game on and we both had them by the end of the session :4_17_5:
Riding with ya mates rules :4_17_5: (especially in an empty skatepark)

Are you guys doing the monday or thursday sessions Ross?
-
Hiya Sean
We do Monday and Thursday mate, there is even a possibility of Superfly making an appearance too :)
-
Wouldn't hold ya breath for that one Ross, aint seen him for months! ::)
-
SuperWho????
-
Excellent work lads. It also gives me an excuse to ask a question. I have always wanted to get into vert and with winter coming and sessions most likely starting up at Corby until we are out of the cold and dark again I want to dabble on there vert.
So my question, where do you buy a decent vert full face? Please recommend some shops and brands. I am not after anything fancy just something black and fool proof.
-
skaterham vert is small at 11ft (corby is 14ft and huge) so is good to learn (saying that its till scary learning to drop in etc) vert is additive, slow progression but you there slowly
I use a lazer motorcross helmet, altho i'd prefer a Bell full face 8)
whos going tomorrow - monday? i'll be there and most mondays :daumenhoch:, cant do thursdays now
-
Robotnik - very nearly all vert riders wear a good old fashioned MX lid. You see the odd fullface MTB lid occasionally, they're certainly nice and light, but I'm not convinced personally just how well they'll protect you from a real vert slam.
You can feel the difference in quality, weight and comfort between the brands and costs too - a £60 lid from fcuk knows who is not gonna be anywhere as nice as £300worth of Arai VXpro or BEll Moto7. There's a reason why you see so many Bell helmets, they're lovely!
Anyhoo, grab yourself a copy of Trials and Motorcross News from WHSmiths and have a trawl through the classifieds for a local MX shop and go and try a few on, they do vary massively between brands. Once you're decided you can then always keep an eye on ebay for an old model to appear (they do quite regularly) and get yourself a bargain.
DO NOT buy a secondhand lid under any circumstances.....
My recommendations would be, Bell, Arai, One Industies, Fox and Shoei. I have experience with all these lids and rate them all. I would also say Simpson, but their MX lid is rarer than rare and you'll probably not get to try one on anywhere, so it's ruled out really.
I currently have a Bell Moto7, and If I were to replace my lid I'd be looking for another one of those, or an Arai VXPro/Windham. The Arais are both old models now (the VX3 is out) so they'll be in the sale somewhere. I know that the lower Moto7 model (there are 3 versions of the Moto) has been on ebay brand new for around £90 in the past. Very well worth it, assuming Bells fit your noggin ok.
Any questions, give me a shout ;)

I'll be up there tonight Rich.
As for helmets i'm running a Bell moto 7

Think the replacement is the 8.
-
i need one of those my gaffer taped peak was flapping about tonight!
-
Nice and comfy Rich :4_17_5: Visibility is good too even when the lights go out at the church :LolLolLolLol:
-
Does skaterhem have odd rules regarding bmx opening times. I wouldn't mind visiting to ride that ramp but its a 2 1/2 hr drive...
-
Not bmx times, but there are some age restrictions.
Unless it's recently changed, then Monday and Thursday nights 8.30-10.30pm, one is bike night, and t'other is over 18s night or summat like that. Never that busy on the vert ramp :)
-
Just thought I'd bump this and say thanks for the full face info, I didn't reply earlier as I banned myself from Rad due to the distraction and having a lot of work on. But thanks again.
-
No sweat. If you can get your sizing correct, there's some bargains on Ebay right now - end of line and last years colours etc.
-
hey rob, my head measures 57 ???, closest is a medium 58 do ya reckon that would be ok? small seem to be 55-56!
-
Yeah, you're a Bell medium. Do you know if you have a Bell head? ;D
IF you get a Moto7 or 8, they have interchangeable cheek pads, you can custom fit by swapping those for fatter or thinner ones.
-
cheers rob, i've just bought a new moto 7 on for £139.99 off ebay, i offered £100 and they let me have it for £125 inc postage :daumenhoch:
matt black 8)
-
interchangeable cheek pads,
Could do with some of those on me seat.
