Title: Team Mongoose, Proper build
Post by: Astrodamus on February 10, 2006, 06:28 PM
The following are the "before" pics of an original finish team mongoose that I threw together with some parts laying around..

These are the "After" pics of the overhaul project. Something about the blue/red combo was bugging me, so I decided to go all blue. Tell me which you think is/was better. Before or after..

Quick rundown of the changes:
Suntour seat clamp changed to SS Mongoose clamp
Bars changed from Kuwi-Lazer-Lites, to unknown alloy.
Pads changed from mongoose vinyl to Cal lites (v-bar prevents blue goose pads, not that I have any, but I do need a set for my blue max)
One piece Takagi's replaced with SuperMaxy/Sugino chainwheel
Tange grips replaced with mongoose grips
Red generic snake-bellys replaced with NOS "Swallow motocross" tires

Now I need a set of blue KKT rattraps 9/16, or Suntour square pedals w/blue cages.

Blue for sure , the red seems to leech the blue , and now you have replaced the red for blue all the other blue seems to brighten up. The tuffs seem much bluer without the red tyres and the frame looks much nicer with the cal lite pads than the goose ones , yea the 1st is more correct in a anal sort of way , but who cares about that , 2nd looks much better

I THINK IT LOOKS GREAT BOTH WAYS BUT I WOULD SAY I PREFER THE ALL BLUE VERSION. ADD SOME BLUE MONGOOSE VINYL SNAP PADS AND IT WOULD BE EVEN BETTER STILL.

VERY NICE BUILD GOOD WORK :daumenhoch:

Thanks for all the comments.

I agree with whomever pointed out the red leeching effect on the blue tuffs, I didn't notice until you said that, and I went back to look at the pics, and perhaps that it what was bothering me. With red the tuffs look faded, but with the light blue tires, they appear a deep rich blue. (as they truly are in person).

As far as the red pads, they are already spoken for on another build of mine. And as far as getting blue pads, believe me, that is my first choice, however, the v-bar prevents that idea from the start.

Cheers!

PS: How does the karma thing work here?

I wouldn`t worry to much about the karma thing, it seems there`s a competition for who can get the most `shut ups` and I bet that gets me a few more  :daumenhoch:

I agree, it deserves some SS bars.

I have a set, but they are for my "Pride of the fleet" build! (coming soon!)

9 geese all together.. (well "BMX Products Inc" bikes..  only 3 are regular "mongooses")

Here is my DeCoster:

and my '78 minigoose:

And one I sold 6 or 7 months ago:

A few more will be built before this year is up, and I'm very excited about them!

Is that original finish, or have you re-coated it ? I've got an '81 Motomag that I'm gonna paint, as it has a few marks that need taking out. I wanna do it this colour, so I could use a paint code or colour match.

i like the blue and i know what you mean about the red blue combo, i remember thinking it looked great as a kid but now when i look at my Skyway that's done red blue all i keep thinking is 'clowns bike'. Shame no blue snap pads though.

All I can say is probably. The thing I'm going on is that regular geese lost their coaster mounts in mid to late '79. So I'm assuming the same applies to the minis.

But, tell me the serial number and I can decipher year and month.

Thanks for the compliments.

And no, this was not original finish. It was spraybomed gold metallic before I stripped it down to nickel. It was in my early days of restoring and looking back, honestly I was a dork for not keeping the nickel which was beautifully preserved under the paint. (I hate even admitting to this felony!) The powdercoating shop I took it to said he could do a candy finish, which consisted of one coat a silver sparkle base, and then a transluscent blue over top of it.

To tell you the truth, I regret all of them I have to sell, but I have a goal in mind, and I'm pressing on toward that end. In fact, I'm there.. I'm just waiting for stuff back from polishing, powdering, renickeling, etc..   (shhh!)

Here is one I sold last year:
