Title: V.D.C Restoration .
Post by: V.D.C 84 on September 12, 2008, 09:57 PM
Well dug the old bike out my parents shed and its looking sorry for itself but it has been 25 years.
Been doing the autosol, brasso, coke and tin foil trip but looks like new chrome is needed.
Got my new decals thanks Del,
I will put the finished item up here but gonna take a while i think,
one thing i always had trouble with all them years ago was the headset with it being a different size,
i remember buying the best one i could back then but there must be something better now,any ideas.
Well wish me luck ,
gonna enjoy this...

They do look special in white but wanted to see if i could get it chromed like it used to.
Since been polishing it looks better than that now .

Any one got advice on a quality headset for it,

Mate,

Listen up. Not sure how far into polishing it you are but deffo put some brown hp sause on it and leave on for 2 days. Then get the unsharp/blunt side of a knife and take the rust off. Then autosol it. Polish and polish and polish and do it in sections, ie chainstays, top tube, bb etc. I would ALWAYS advise against rechroming. IMO i believe that the chromers make them way too chromey! Keep it as original as you can. If you want i will help ya. I live in Surrey too and have fooked about with loads of chrome bikes. ;)

Obviously it could be messy but easy to clean up after.

Its not a wind up.

Bikes bitd were not ultra chromey! IMO they just look too bling when things are rechromed and it must be pointed out that once the chrome has been stripped the frame and forks need to be poilished to a really high standard otherwise the rechrome will  look as if they have chromed over sand particals. The better the prep the better the chrome and alot of companies do not polish to the standard that the bike was when it was chromed originally.

You will have more self satisfaction knowing that the frame and forks are original chrome and that the decals are original too. I would always try and save it first.

Here is a frame and forks i had done. Good example of what i mean.

Then the rechrome

If you look at the bb you will notice that it is gritty and a tarnished colour. This is because it wasnt polished very well in that area.

This bike looked great but if i could have saved it i would have tried. The chrome had flaked off in places like in the first pic and i had no choice.
You may like it looking blingy but it was never like i remembered a chrome TA bitd.

you was on about the headset also coming loose alot
check first that you havent got a low spot on your fork threads
as they can jump threads as the pitch gets worn or the head tube isnt flared as with vdc they did that alot.

Cool you've convinced me to keep on polishing,
the Hutch looks great if i could get it looking like that i'd be well happy,
but mine is in bad shape to start,
will polish all week and see how it looks by the weekend.
Thanks harris for the advice on the headset....

No one replied about your headset mate, here you go, best headset you could hope to put in that sucker!

If the chrome can't be saved, do a Charlie Reynolds replica and paint her pink!  If you want it rechromed i can get it done down here in Poole.

Re chrome always looks 'wet look' to me.  I still consider getting my TA powdered on an almost daily basis.  Just stripping it down currently and will decide after its had another polish.
