Title: 1” Challenger XL: Finished at last!
Post by: SaMAlex on March 26, 2008, 12:03 AM
I got this bike a year or so ago. It was complete and I didnt change much on it, just the bars and stem. I used it at a few races, and it won 3rd at MK07 Mid Show & Shine (even tho it wasn’t shiny cos I was riding it on the track).

I have been meaning to change a few parts on it, and also put on the decals (that a very top man got made. Thanks, you know who you are  :daumenhoch:). I put on some Mk1 Prince Albert Cranks (re pop decals from the magic hand of Del) and now I think it is all finished. No need to change a thing.

I read somewhere that there were some challengers made with 990 mounts cos Neal Wood wanted some. I don’t know if its true but I like the story, and I think this is the only 1” challenger I have seen with 990s on it.

Have you got a dancing man for your Slams?

Ah Laz, they aint Slams. They are Challenger/race bars. Thinner tubing and thinner OD cross bar. The bike had slams on it when I got it but I changed them for the race bars. I even like them in black (that was how I got them)

I thought before I asked but they do look identical to Slams! No dancing man required then!

Yep, same shape, just lighter. These ones are a little too cut down. I might make some bar ends that extend them a bit, but they look so 90s trails, cut right down like that with the grips down on the bend of the bar.

Really nice Alex.

I keep meaning to start re-vamping my Challenger as it's a mish-mash of parts at the moment (just threw what I had/could get on it to make it rideable), but life/racing keep getting in the way.

I'll get round to it eventually.

Yep, what the man said, that's a great build Alex and fine detailing too, well worth the extra effort.

That lower pic really has a Chris Moeller look to it, nice tucked style  8)

Too right Gogo. Ive got he GT Profiles that came off it to swap back in there when I ride it hard. It'd be a real shame to snap those cranks.

The rear tyre is a Comp 8 (I think). It was the only 1.75 amber wall I could get hold of.

I'll be "dumbing down" my Challenger to make it more period correct.

New School Skyways to be replaced with Arayas rims/GT Mohawk hubs.
dialled bikes bars to be replaced with Challenger bars.
Shimano brake lever to be replaced with whatever will work with a Pitbull.
Crupi Beartraps to be replaced by Shimano DX (if I can get them re-furbed).

After that, everything on it (apart from the headset) will be late-80s/early 90s stuff.
