I know this is a very delicate subject but I'll ask it anyway...........
If you race at regional Level can you use Clipped pedals in the cruiser class?
If you race at national level can you use Clipped pedals in the cruiser class?
I've not raced since 1984 and looking to start in January aged 34......... >:D

I know the word "Clips" is a dirty dirty word........but I've used Clips on my mountain bike for a couple of years now and reading various posts on this site and others I understand it’s a mind field of debate :tickedoff:

personally theyre not for me, not BMX :daumenhoch:
i actually cant use them at all, even on my mtb, i just cant shift my weight around the bike aswell,
its a tough decision to make as a racer though,if everyone else is running them then you're kind of forced to to keep up,
if our top pro's want to be competetive in the 08 limpicks will they have to run them?
i think its down to personal choice and i wouldnt look down on the high end racers using them,
what does appall me though is seeing nippers using them, dads holding them up on the gate etc,
they wont learn the bike skills that they would without clipping in,
the injuries are worse for them too which seems unfair.
i know for a fact that clips are the sole (no pun) reason racing isnt included in ridebmxmag.

I just dont see how its BMX anymore with the inclusion of clips, to me the top races are just sprints over rough terrain. What happened to sliding into a corner full pelt with your foot out? TBH I miss seeing that side of the sport, for that extra couple of seconds you have sacraficed the excitement of BMX. A bit like watching the Gooners play football, almost as bad as watching paint dry >:D

Damn, I'll have to give James back his Mallet C's. I was hoping that as he rides better clipped in I'd get the same advantage on the up-stroke as he does!! :D Humps

for someone starting out bmx racing i'd got with flat pedals to get used to the feel of the bike/terrain etc. but if you feel comfier clipped in go for it.
did anyone see the crash at the velodrome this week????'that'd put me off been clipped in.

id shit myself if i was clipped in on a bmx race , but id also shit myself if i was in a bmx race unclipped, if the idea is to get round a track as fast as possible then clips are probably the way, if youve got good cycling technique then technically you will be able to transfer more power to the pedals, though the limited gearing used by bmx has a limit , this doesnt allow for sheer guts and determination , which in my experience is what counts in competitive sports , there should be a level playing field either clipped or not or both in different races , i dont see why it matters why not take all comers ?

I think clips came about as a result of watching what the roadies were doing with Look pedals in the 80's (and they got those from Skiing), the thing with BMX is that there is a much higher chance of getting a race/ride ending injury with them. I used to run them on my MTB but swtiched to flatties as I found them too restrictive on the downhill and technical bits. I run them on my Road bike but I've only ever come off that as a result of other road users!!!
For me clips are not BMX and should not be used, but that is just my opinion :-X :LolLolLolLol:

Throwing my two pence in the ring here, used clips on my mtb for a while but switched back about 5 years ago when I started to get real bad joint pains in my knees and ankles. Now run flats on my mtb and bmx, joints much happier :daumenhoch: The last two dh mtb world champs have both been won on flats,don't do it keep away from those "devil pedals" >:D

If we have technological advances like carbon fibre forks, stronger cranks, lighter wheels and frames then why are these not seen as the devils work?
I can understand the "not using them in OS races because you are keeping true to the era of the bikes/races.
But surly there’s a place for them in modern racing ?
Why do we embrace some advantages but not others ?

some guys do moan about the carbon forks beleive me,I had carbon forks on my race bike but recently started to do some small trails,so switched back to chromo,as for the pedals,not for me at all.....but can appreciate anyone who wants to be competetive using them....one thing that does concern me though is that TOO many kids are using them without the essential riding skills to start with!!!!

just for my own minds sake ,,me mate lent me some shoes and pedals to try out on me cruiser
and used em for 3 weeks ,,did not race with them
the result for me was
SLOWER
thats right i found i was slower out the gate and just could not pull down the start straight as hard as i could on flatts
weather or not that was a confidence thing ,,i not sure but was glad to give his pedals back and spent me money on some decent flatts instead
end of day though its your preference ,,,

Ignoring the rights and wrongs for kids it depends what your bike skills are like if you should use them or not. If you haven't raced since 84 have you got the confidence to go round a track at full pelt and have your feet tied to the pedals (I've been riding again for 4 years and I'm sure I wouldn't want to use clips as my riding skills ain't up to it and I need to have the odd quick foot dab to keep me upright). If you have ridden alot of MTB with them and feel confident then go for it.
The Pro's have the skills to use them (and need to use them if they want to win until people see sense and ban them as I agree with most other poeple on here that it's just not BMX), kids get hurt using them and find they can't ride a bike as well if they stop using them as they haven't built up the bike skills without them.

I usede them on my mtb when I was guiding purely for the advantage whilst climbing but could never truely go for it on descents with them, now my old boss and his wife are going back to flats for winter as they live in scotland (the cold freezes the pedals up) and his wife asked me how you can bunnyhop and jump without your feet coming off the pedals!!! :idiot2:
thats what these pedals do, take away skills and the need to learn them
in the past few years the most entertaining/close racing has been the "No Clips" series :4_17_5:

you may have only noticed that you can only come when your bird sticks her finger up your arse, that's the beginning mate... take them devil pedals off...
Instead, push your self at a safe, progressive pace with friends at your local track / skate park, slowly and surely get those skills back...

Personally I would not wear clips to race on a BMX. The reason for the question in the first place was I'd been looking into starting back into racing and had seen "No clips" in some of the rules........

DX's are still pretty good, most yoof use them still, I use Crupi square cage, all black... very sweet...
Crowzers are very BMX, and there at the very beginning, I had a 26" Torker crowzer when I was 14'teen... I could X-=Up it, flatty it so that makes it pretty MX to me... 8)

IVE SEEN SOME OF THE KIDS GETTING OLDER GOING TO CLIPS AND THERE IS A POWER ADVANTAGE BUT IT TAKES THE EXCITMENT AWAY FROM REAL RACING (GETTING YOUR FOOT OUT).
I WISH THE BCF WOULD MAKE A DECISION ABOUT CLIPS SO THIS WOULDNT KEEP COMING UP AS A SUBJECT ALL THE TIME .
IS IT PROGRESS? I DONT KNOW IM ALL FOR THINGS GOING FORWARD.

I am sure some of you here followed this same topic thread on Vintage earlier this year. All it took was a couple of guys on both sides of the fence to blow the whole thing up. It turned out very ugly.

All i'm gonna say is get yer selves a copy of Transit 10, sit back and watch some of the monster crashes, feet still attached to bikes :shocked:, legs twisted into unbelieveable positions because of devil pedals :shocked:
Then look at the follow my leader syle that BMX has become :(

This country is far too nanny state, and now its trickling down to the so called masses. This sport is about racing, and with that comes an inherent danger/risk. Lets not dillute this sport down into safety issues.

Correct, it's a personal view, however the facts speak for themselves, racing IMO has become follow the leader, there are not as many moves made in corners with clips as you are unable to manouver as well, also there have been some V serious accidents with Clips, Jason Richardson etc.
By far the worst tho is watching little kids on clips coming over the finish and falling over side ways cos they can't un clip :shocked:
Thank god they have been restricted to older age groups now :daumenhoch:

To the Grandmas I am about to teach to slurp eggs I apologise.
For me clips suck because they are ergonomically incorrect for BMX. You see, when road racing you need that extra leverage from you ankle and you get this when you push your toes downwards for each pedal stroke. Clips make this possible because they fix the ball of your foot onto the pedal. The natural place for your foot on a BMX is to place the "palm" on the pedal thus keeping the ankle more rigid. A heavy landing with your foot in the clipped position can force your toes upwards thus putting enormous strain on your Achilles tendon and this (at best) hurts like hell.
Clips can make you faster but at enormous risk, even if you never fall off.

After seeing Nicholas come off on Saturday im glad he was wearing armour.He fell rolled and got up, smacked his head quite hard on the ground but all was fine .
Scratched his lid quite badly and ripped his race shirt but was straight back on his bike.
Wouldnt let him clip in tho ...even if he could at his age. :knuppel2:
