My parcel finally turned up today. Fair play to him, he threw a seatpost in as a sorry for it being posted late :).
The chrome isn't in too good a condition. It looks well worn in places. So i may be looking at powdering it white.
The decals that say Redline Proline II will need replacing. But generally i'm well happy :D.
In one of the pics it shows a small gusset behind the seatpost tube? Not seen this on any pics i've looked at of Redlines before?
Redline Proline II... Stamped Redline and serial number 375830.

Any thoughts lads? :daumenhoch: G.
-
looking good mate, get it built and bring it over for a good thrashing :daumenhoch:
-
Looks nice mate! just wondering why you posted it in Parks and gatherings though ;)
-
looking good!
redline chrome is often shit
gonna look mint in white though
-
Yeah, i know bud. Trying to do too many things at one time and hit the wrong forum :idiot2:.
Don't i feel like a muppet. G.
-
don't worry about the gusset they did appear on some models from 83 I think.
Nice frame and the hard to find forks :daumenhoch:
-
LOOKS NICE !! IT'LL LOOK WICKED POWDERED WHITE !!!
-
It doesn't have the chainstay bridge, which means it is an early one. What is the serial number?
Shame to lose the stickers but it's got to be done to get it resto'd.
The do look good in mine. Gonna do a Dave Rombloke and throw in a shot of my white PL20.
-
that's a real early one you've got there Jim......looks like a square box with a red cross in it.....was that a LTD? ;)
-
It does have the chainstay bridge buddy. It's just that none of the pics show it properly.
The serial number is 375830. Does that make it an '83 then ?
I can't see your pic Jimwise... ;) G.
-
Your serial should start with R then a letter. Eg RB, RC, RD the letter represents the year RD is an 84 if I remember correctly.
Correct me if I'm wrong.
-
There's no letters before the digits on my b.b serial number... ??? G.
-
The last couple of pics b4 i attack the frame and forks. Remove decals, then try and polish the chrome to see how good it can be. :daumenhoch:

-
It looks a treat, but tbh I have never seen that gusset behind the seat tube, and the welding looks a bit iffy, can you do a close up pic of it for me? :daumenhoch:
-
Here you go bud... I did take a look at the welding straight away, and it does match the rest of the welds on the frame and forks. ;)
Still a little strange tho. G.
-
it's better than my welding!
-
I take it all back, the weldings spot on . Wonder what year that gusset was added? I have never seen one before :coolsmiley:
-
Thanx m8. Like i said i've never seen the gusset on any Proline frame i've seen yet.
With the serial number being all digits too, i thought i'd best check it all over properly.
The frame weighs 4lb 4oz. The forks weigh exactly 2lb. This matches up with old specs 'n' tests. So am happy there. :)
The welds are basically the same throughout the frame and forks. Inc the seatpost gusset. :)
No cracks, bends, dinks etc. :daumenhoch:
A couple of things... The chainstay bridge is welded on wonky, and the drilled hole for the front brake (even tho i won't be running one) is well offset to the right ???. G.
-
As for the serial number, my race PL doesnt have any letters in it either, I would like to find out more about that :daumenhoch:
-
Taking a look over the decals on the frame, i've just found the original shop sticker on the seatpost tube. It was originally sold out of Marblehead, Massachusetts. :) G.
-
I have an original shop sticker on my other one, I will try an find a pic later :daumenhoch:
-
now,s the time we need brenn
me ST20 f/f has the same gusset behind the seat tube

MMMmmm, very interesting... are those the factory stickers? is the bottom bracket shell machined out or really thick? Do you know any of the history for this frame set...
And it's a late 82 till early 84...

Hi Ron. Are you talking about mine or Steves m8 ? :)
-
Yours, Mr Gremlin...
-
Ok m8 :)
The decals on the frame and forks look to be original. Well old now tho and falling apart.
I've no history at all on it. Other than i bought it off the bay 2 weeks back. I am going to get in contact with the seller again and see if he can shed some light on it.
The bottom bracket shell has been machined out... G. :daumenhoch:
-
There seems to be a few variants on the PL II from what I have seen. Mine had the same sticker set and the chain stay, yet the frame number included a letter denoting the year. Think mine is an 82 or 83, cant remember exactly without checking. As for the seat post gusset I have also never seen one of these, need to research this Ratty!
Maybe this is mod Redline did on some of the later PL II to the counter the stress from the well tapered back seat tube section that Redlines were renouned for.....
The welds do look factory, will be interesting to find out about this.
The frame looks in very goodcondition Gremlin, will it polish up?
-
The seat stay gusset is something that has been discussed a few times over on VBMX, myself and Subwax have similar frames for carrera II's but his has the gusset mine does not.
PL20 models were a five inch headtube, and had machined ends (narrower centre section). Here are some extracts;
Apparently that's an odd one. the frames with that gusset between the seat stays was a 1983 (RC serial) thing (with a little overflow into '84).
maybe someone at the factory grabbed the wrong die for some serials that day...(?)
there were also some redline frames made in Japan '83-85 that had a smaller font, all-numeric serial. speculation is they were using more than one source of manufacture.
-
Gremlin, the seat stay gusset is an oddity for a Pl. the BB brace suggests post 1982 but before late 1983 when the sticker font was changed (unless the stickers were changed sometime in it's life). the Japanese manufactured frames would have had RA, RB, RC etc which would include the brazed rear drop outs. yours looks heli arc so this would suggest it's an American manufactured frame, hence no letters in the id.
Frosty, mines an RC but hasn't got the seat stay gusset.
trust me, Grem, you will have great difficulty replacing those 3 colour stickers. the ones you see advertised don't have the white in them.
please, please, please don't paint it, no 1981/82/83 prolines were ever painted. chrome only. build her up as a survivor :smitten:
-

Only the Carrera 1 had brazed dropouts, but I'm with you on the US built frame, although the head tube sticker does suggest it's a Jap built frame, I know they were still building frame only sets towards the end of 82 in the States, but I'm not sure when they moved every thing overseas.
Good stuff, keep it coming :daumenhoch:
-
hey gremlin, i have just bought a pl11 or pl20 f+f from the states its got no decals but fame number is rc 09858, it hasnt arrived yet so i cant see if it has the same gusset as yours, the seller says its an 83, and by the pics the chrome looks slightly neater than yours, i am new to this resto lark so can you please im me to see how much you paid for yours( hope i wasnt ripped off) and who you are using to powder coat, also where can i get a og spec list or catalog parts list for an exact rebuild? regards
-
for powdercoating see SuperBikeDan. the best powdercoater in the business... :daumenhoch:
-
I've had a good go at trying to polish up the chrome on the frame and forks now. Not looking good at all. In a lot of places there's just a matt finish to it. Looks as tho someone in the past has tried polishing it to within an inch of it's life. With 500 grit !!!. ??? Also the chrome on the fork drop is just peeling away. I've been picking it off with my thumb nail. There's no damage/cracks underneath it. It looks as tho someone has just tightened a wheel nut onto it without using a washer. :knuppel2: Luckily it has just ripped the chrome off instead of marking the drops.
So it comes down to how i'm going to have it refinished...
The 1st option is to have it powdered in white by SuperBikeDan. Which is easier, quicker, cheaper, and also will give the set a fresh makeover. Plus be an excellent job might i add ;)
Or 2nd have it stripped and rechromed. Which is expensive and time consuming. Plus finding someone who'll do a spot on job. :-\
I suppose there's a 3rd choice. But leaving as is and applying a new decal set before building it up really isn't an option. Where the finish is so dull and hazy. :(
To be honest i'm leaning now towards having it rechromed. Yesterday i was sure i'd be having it powdered. But now i've spent 24 hours pawing over it i've fallen for seeing it in gleaming new chrome... Like it should be. ;)
As far as the seat stay gusset goes. I'm happy knowing there are a few more PL20's out there with it in place. It's cool too that my frame is that bit different to most others of the same model. A bit of a difference straight from the factory. 8)
As for the build. I can see it as... Redline Proline II frame and forks,
Redline 401 flight cranks, with 44t polished bubble script chainring,
Tioga beartrap II chrome headset,
Tuf neck polished stem,
Redline Proline pro sized v-bars,
Kashimax aero saddle,
Polished araya 7x rims, Suntour large flange hubs in red with red nipples,
D.c 1000 caliper in black for the rear, and D.c tech III lever in black,
Suntour XcII pedals,
Rainbow label comp III's in black.
Plus a few other bits 'n' bobs. But that's the bulk of it. :D
I payed £155 for mine kowalski m8. To inc frame , forks, and nos Tioga bear trap II headset in chrome. I don't actually know their worth. I've always thought of having a Redline as a project, but never did any searching around to find out general prices. I was actually on the hunt to buy a Kuwahara E.T or a Skyway Xl T.a in white when i came across the auction for the Pl20. I thought the buy it now seemed like half a bargain and the rest is history.
Some of the other lads are far more informed about this subject m8. I'm on a steady learning curve. Any of them will answer questions happily. ;)
Thanx for all the info lads. Keep it all coming and i'll be keeping the questions flowing too. God i love my PL :smitten: Gav.
-
grem
that reads as one ace set up
not being nosey but how much of that gear off the list have you got
bar the headset
i may be able to help :daumenhoch:
-
So far in my grand plan i have... Headset, wheels, XcII's, frame and forks :2funny:. Gonna be a long build Steve. G :daumenhoch:
-
i hear ya
i gotta build on the go
well on paper ;D
-
cheers gremlin, nice set up you have goin on there, funny enough i was supposed to buy a kuwahara nova f+f but the dude on ebay let me down, i was trawling when i saw my one i paid 169 + shipping so i hope this is ok? when it arrives i think i will have to check the chrome and maybe use that dan dude for a nice powder job, please let me know where you source your flight cranks from and stickers and pads i think they are like rockin horse deficate, i will post a pic of the frame when it arrives i am so excited i could sh£t !
-
Here's an ad for the Carrera II
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/y91/frosty_paul/Redline/84carrera2.jpg)
pads are rocking horse poop, most other parts can be acquired, oh except the seat post - againt these are rare and a used one last week went for $137.
decals, there are plenty of reproductions ones (sanctioned by Redline) but they are not very good, as someone mentioned earlier the white outline older proline decals are hard to find but do come up now and then. Here's two versions of Carrera I and II
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/y91/frosty_paul/Redline/CarerraIIdecals.jpg)
-
Nice Carrera II stickers... 302Zapper won a few sets of those a couple of weeks back, wouldn't surprise me if he knocks out some copies...
Could do with a set myself ::)
-
I know I was bidding on them aswell. It seems the red to yellow fades are difficult for the current manufacurers to replicate, also for relatively easy decals I don't know why someone has not done a better job of the white outlined prolines!!
-
As far as decals go, what about the red/black/grey ones like on Rattys? Nobody's mentioned them yet. I like them.
I don't think i'm going to replace them like for like. The red to yellow fade would look very nice on it. :) G.
-
Gremlin,
Check out bmxstop for some of the approved redline decals, also 302Zapper (ebay id) he does some of the black and grey copies now and then.

I had a bit of a free afternoon today. So i decided to go over the frame properly and give it a good clean up. :)
I started with all the tubes that are in pretty good condition chrome wise. Seemed to come up quite nicely with the old Autosol. Put a nice little shine to it. So i thought.
Then finally i got to the top tube. The one that looks like it's been sanded down ??? Starting with the 1st 6 inches or so from the headtube, which is the section i tried cleaning up the other day (i took a pic before i started to see if any change happened).
I attacked it with plenty of paste for 5 minutes or so. Then polished it off... No change :-[
Another 5 minutes with paste... I could just about see a change happening :) Not a lot tho. :(
I thought that'd be about it. But thought i'd give it one more go to get a little bit more shine and that'd be it...
5 to 10 more minutes. Polished off... Holy batsh1t !!!, I can see my face in it :2funny:
So then the next 4hrs were taken up making the whole frame (especially the toptube) look like a mirror. Well a 1000% better than it was :smitten:
And that's by hand... I reckon i lost a stone today.
Pics...
Before...
After...
So it's pretty safe to say the frame won't be off for a rechrome and def won't be getting powdered over in white. But the forks will have to be refinished due to the flaked off chrome. Unless where it's just on the drops, they could be polished so the metal is a close match for the chrome? ???
So I'm pretty chuffed with myself today. :coolsmiley: Time to try and source a set of decals now me thinx ;) G.
-
Nice one, that is going to look great!!!
-
spot on gremlin :daumenhoch:
i know a lad that may be able to get the correct (repo) 3 colour stickers. i'll get in touch with him and see how we go ;)

mate i cant wait to get hold of mine, it was shipped yest from the us so hopefully next week i can get busy, i will need all parts except f+fs so if you know of anything or can give me some advise on sourcing stuff please let me know, this is my first ever rebuild and i really havent got a clue im more an os skater, my only other bike is a mid eighties pro-lite cheers and keep rubbing!!!!!
-
As soon as your f&fs land matey you'll have to get the pics of it fired onto here. Don't forget the b4 and after pics. ;)
Any help you need on any part of the resto or build, just give us lot a shout. Always happy to give our opinions or advice. :)
As far as i being your first build. Just take your time enjoy it, and watch out for that bug that's gonna creep up on you. The one you didn't realize you'd caught, til one day you're looking at a dozen bikes sat all over the house. Spare parts rammed into every and spare space and thinking to yourself... "i'm sure i've enough room for that Ripper in here somewhere". :D G.
-
thats come up realy nice gav :daumenhoch: will look nice when its done, are you using it at mk ?
-
Cheers Paul m8. Gonna take my time over this build. As for using it at M.k... maybe next year if it's together ;) Gav.
-
hey grem, still waiting for my f+fs to arrive its torture!! have been off work sick for a while too so could do with a bit of excitement!!!! anyway i am starting to try and gather parts already, have just got my headset same as yours great choice! not earning money as self employed so have to be careful not to spend too much! anyway how did your dropouts polish up? i saw some of your chrome had come off, does it look good? ps check ebay.com there are 2 pairs of nos v bars blue and red pair i want to bid but am damn skint may help you out though
-
I know what it's like to wait bud. Mine took over 2 weeks... from London. :D
Beartrap headsets are very nice. This is my 3rd one. Quality.
I've not really attacked the drops yet. The forks cleaned up nicely, but that's as far as i got. Looking very nice now part built :smitten:
The Redline bars on ebay us are cool. But not what i'm looking for. Gotta be chrome Proline v-bars. Which are pro sized. But it's up to you at the end of the day m8. Your build. Hope it lands on your step sooner rather than later. Give us all a shout when it does. :daumenhoch: G.
-
gremlin or anyone else please advise, a really nice chap on here is selling a set of araya polished racing wheels rims are 20x1 .3/8, now i know these are not the wheels of choice but will they look ok on a pl? was it a race bike bitd, i quite like the thinner race wheels and race plate feel but if they look shite or are totally wrong please let me know asap as i have first dib dobs and dont want to dissapoint the kind seller, cheers
-
The PL20 was designed for the older rider (pro) and skinnies would suit a smaller bike. But they will still look good on a PL, its your bike, build it how you like it, not like everyone else :daumenhoch:
-
cheers ratty, so they wont look well out of place? when i see these wheels on thinner frames they look sweet, but as my f/ing frame is still not in the country yet i dont know how chunky it looks u know, have u seen pls with thin arayas dude?
-
tbh, i havent, but Ive seen my mates GT pro with skinnies on it, and it looks ok, check it out in the OSS bike vote :daumenhoch:
-
will do mate cheers, i think i will get em i can always move em on if they look poop! i really wanted to do the bike og but its actually quite hard, ps saw your pl in the museum now that is a sweet ride you must be mr money bags!!!!!! :)
-
Not money bags, just keep your eyes open for good deals :daumenhoch: dont rush into the first thing you see
-
great advise thats me allover! just checked the gt pics if its the one with red padset then yeah they look really smart, i think the proof is in the pudding and i will only know for sure when i hold the wheels up to the frame :daumenhoch: speaking of deals let us know when you are offloading those flight cranks on the cheap....im your man :D
-
It's your choice on wheels, parts etc buddy. Different people have differing tastes :). T.b.h i've not seen a P.l with skinnies on either. I've always preferred and gone for the 20x1.75 rims since forever. So Skinnies always look a bit strange to me. ;) G.
-
boys thanks again for the advise, i have passed on the skinnies, shame they were decent value, can you let me know if any nice sets of arayas or ukais come up please or where to ask or look for some, i must say people on here are really friendly it makes a nice change!! ps one more day gone and still no sign of my new project!!!!!!!
-
just keep looking in the forsale section, ebay, Alans' etc etc
-
cheerrs frosty, doing all of those things 24/7, off work at the mo and sitting in front of this screen for hours at a time, operation redline is running overtime :daumenhoch:
-
majorly dumb question time be warned, ,,,,my frame thats coming is an 83 ,now i quite like the 85 pl set up including the decals, although its not era correct is there a difference in frame shape or size between these years? now for the dumbest question yet, when people build show bikes for comps do they build the bikes dry or do the cranks and usual parts get greased up and lubricated as if they were going to be ridden? i have defo got too much time on my hands!!! ??? ???
-
Build the bike up using grease, it wont hurt the bike, and then when your ready, you can race it with us lunatics :daumenhoch:
-

:LolLolLolLol:
-
I've actually got my frame and forks together now. Funnily enough for the 1st time ever i've put the headset together dry.
More to do with pulling apart and arsing around. But for a full build i've always prepared whichever bike to be ready to ride. ;)
Kowalski are you going to be looking for full wheels or piece by piece? Just so i know what to keep an eye out for, for you. G. :daumenhoch:
-
hi g yeah full wheels please, tyres not essential and they must be in v good condition the more spotters out there the better :daumenhoch: cheers bud
-
mr gremlin, need some advice on that chrome polishing technique, did you just use autosol a cloth and elbow grease? no polishing wheel or grinder, just attacked my prolite in the same way and the results are dog dump! you looked like u got a lot of the scratches out of yours too, hints needed please :-\ :daumenhoch:
-

Just Autosol, cloths, elbow grease and plenty of sweat bud. I did it 4-6 inches at a time, using loadsa paste and working it in all directions to really attack it. I was gob smacked the way it came up eventually, i honestly thought it was a lost cause, even after going over it the 3 or 4 times before i started seeing a change.
Oh i did bath it as well... I hope the wife doesn't see this :D I bathed it while she was out. Dried it off nicely. Then used her hair dryer to pump hot air thru the tubes, spraying WD40 in with the air towards the end to lightly coat the insides of the tubing. After that it's just been polished up with a dry cloth. I'm happy with it. The wife knows no better, and life is good. :daumenhoch: G.
-
:LolLolLolLol: happy days !!!!!!
-
The postman's been busy over the last couple of days. Parts for the Proline build, and other odds 'n' sods keep turning up :)
I've still a couple of packages en route too... which is nice :D
Gotta give a big shout to Chris (crusty) for the 401's, and chainwheel :daumenhoch:. Very nice m8, thanx. :smitten:
Big thanx to Dave (dordymush) for the Haro flo panel :daumenhoch:
The 1 - 1/4" cable clips came in from some matey in Cyprus 8)
Finally, not for the Proline tho. The white Falcon Pro number plate from one of our new members Joe (jt71), cheers buddy ;)
I've a couple more packages due for the build, so will get the pics up once they arrive... G. :daumenhoch:

gooday fellow redliners i have a question, i have recently seen a few sets of os redline v bars on the bay, http://cgi.ebay.com/OLD-SCHOOL-BMX-BLUE-REDLINE-HANDLE-BARS-BAR-w-AME-GRIP_W0QQitemZ130131545017QQihZ003QQcategoryZ48842QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem after speaking to gav about these it seems they are the mini versions of the pro v's. now my question is what bikes were they used on?? would it be wrong to put them on my pl? secondly they always seem to be anodised red or blue, after reading a few threads on removing this stuff could it be done on these, and would they come up to a decent finish, cheers chaps
-
Hi m8. The bars that came fitted to the Redline Pl20 Carrera were Redline Stu Thomson signature V-bars. Which are a pro size bar with a width of 27" or so.
These bars aren't mini versions, they're bars in their own right.
It's your call on whether you want them on your Pl bud. It's your build. It comes down to would these bars being a smaller size be comfortable for you to ride with. Also would you be happy with the difference in look. They are a different shaped bar too.
As for stripping and polishing. If done right they should polish up a treat :) G.
-
this pic is my proline with those small bars on. after riding it around a bit i found they were a bit small so i watched ebay for a while and came up with the correct size chrome ones. now it's spot on.
the small bars are now on this 600a and being a show bike it dosn't really matter how small they are. the finish on these bars is superb and i wouldn't mess with them. if you want chrome i suggest you get chrome ones. they are out there, it just might take a little time to get exactly what you want.

They're a couple of gorgeous bikes Allen :daumenhoch: G.
-
The first Carrera actually came with the small Micro-Line bars, when Stu rode that bike he had custom factory bars... extended Pro-Line V bars. When the Carrera II came it had the new STR bars... :daumenhoch:
I need a set of STR bars... ::)

i'm not sure about that Ron, here's an ad from May 1982 which has Carrera with proline bars. remember, carrera was a complete, wheras prolineII was the frame and fork set which meant we could build it anyway we wanted.......and i did :smitten:

The Carrera didn't come with those bars in the advert, it had Micro Line bars...
BMX Action test...

It's odd, but true... kids bars on a top spec pro race bike :idiot2:
-
jeez luise, check the print on that ad Ron :2funny: and that carrera promo would have been done at least 3 months before to allow for publishing times.
by the way, i have the same test and you'll find it is BMX Plus magazine not BMX action ;)

Had another day of goodies turning up on my doormat. So what did i think i'd do when it's such a lovely day outside?
Yup, hide away in the spare room with my toys and get busy :D
First of all i tucked into my package from Steve (vinoah,s ark). Thanx very much m8 :daumenhoch:. Which had a stamped Redline, chromoly, fluted seatpost, a Dia compe Mx1000 calliper in blk, a Dia compe pre bent lever in blk, and a suntour arrow seatpost clamp in it.
Which is all good and i'm well happy :smitten: .
Second pack contained my 2 sets of Redline Proline decals from the States. Looked at them, thought well nice and was happy for a bit. :)
I started applying the smaller decals first. Then moved onto the larger ones (still cool). Finally got to the downtube decals... The bloody things are about 3" too long (now i'm not impressed).! >:(
So, 1 sh1tty e:mail to the States later, i'm sat here thinking "i can sort this". So out comes the ruler and craft knife. A bit of fumbling later...kinda happy again. I can just about make out the join, but it'll do for now. ;)
It's getting there...

Image intensive i know. But i love taking pics ;) G.

its looking amazing mate, i cant wait to see it all done , is it going to mk :daumenhoch:
-
It may well come along to M.k m8. Won't be finished tho. :LolLolLolLol:
I'm at the stage now where i'm going to be up against plenty of people to get hold of the finishing bits. The elusive parts time of the build, or costly.
A pair of Redline Str v-bars/pro bars... Tuf neck/Pro neck stem (polished)... Black Kashimax Aero. Oh and a Redline black/grey/red top tube pad. I'm not interested in a stem pad (don't want to hide my mirror finish stem). I prefer my v-bars not to have a pad on either (looks less weighty). Hope it'll be easier to pick up a single top tube pads too.
So basically i'm 4 parts away from completing it. :daumenhoch: G.

Whooops.... BMX PLUS ;) just testing ::)
The bars on the promo add are not the same as the bars on the test bike , look at the distance between the stem pad and bar pad on the Pro Line bars, even without the stem pad, the gap on the test bike is not as big... here is another factor...
My 1981 Carrera :)

That bike is looking good Mr Gremlin, well done :daumenhoch:
-
looking nice gav, not happy about that decal cutting though whats that all about? are they the ones from the bay i dont understand why they dont fit please explain im in panic mode :-\
-
looking good there Grem :daumenhoch: good luck finding THAT pad :2funny: patience will be needed :coolsmiley:
hey Ron, that looks great with the blue, looks exactly like the ad. well done :daumenhoch:
-
I thought the chainstay bridge came in 83, for the PL's have I been mistaken?
-
Whoever has produced the decals has only put the PL24 downtube decal on the sheet and not included the PL20 one i think...hence the extra length.
Ginnys has some Redline stickers. ;)
-
That's what i thought m8. But taking a look at Ginny's sets... they're identical to what i have here. ???

Hey Daryl m8. These are the decal sets from the eBay auction, by seller I.d a1-89, out of Mesa Az.
Do not deal with this TOSSPOT!!! >:( Seriously m8 :tickedoff:
At no point in e:mail conversations with him has he in any way even skirted on the fact that he's sold me the wrong item.
He's said... "It's my fault they don't fit". "I must not know what i'm doing"! "That my frame must not be a Proline at all and i'm confused over what bike it is"!!! "How dare i suggest to him he may have supplied the wrong item, when he sells 100's of these decal sets and has never had a single complaint"! As well as the old chestnut... "It's not my fault you don't know what you're doing", "the items are correct and don't expect me to do anything about it"!!! CNUT!!! :knuppel2:
STAY AWAY!!!
The pic shows how much decal had to be removed to get them to fit. :( G.
-
I just had to check that my arse and elbow were different then, luckily they are so I'm happy I can tell the difference between them. That seller clearly cannot :LolLolLolLol:
They look as though they have the same logo on as the decals they sell on www.bmxstop.com although they don't have the same ones. Might be worth dropping them a line to see if they have the 20" frame ones at all.
-
looking good gav looking good :4_17_5:
pleasure to help build such a creature of exquiste nature
cant wait to see her in the flesh ,i mean chromo :coolsmiley:
if she not finished by MK bring her anyways
peeps dont normally get to see other folks works in progress
all close up n personnal
right then
who,s hiding a 79 MXII from me
c,mon i know its out there somewhere :'(
brenn you out there
take pity on me
and sell me one of ya baby,s :daumenhoch:
-
gav m8 i hate people like that and thanks for the warning, dont sweat it, i bought mine from bmxmueseum.com but to be honest all the ones ive seen for sale all look the same length on the sheets so only time will tell, your bike looks awesome mate, i think there will soon be 2 identical ones on here!!!i just know how niggly little things like that can be, and its obviously bothering you as it would me. are you gonna try another set? when mine turn up i will let you know if its the same deal, i think it will be somehow..... let me know the outcome dude :) and keep up the good work
-
I have only seen the decals in the form that you have shown. From memory the decals were sanctioned by redline and given that the set caters for both PL 20 and 24 the downtube decal needs to be long enough for the largest application, so my guess is that the cut down was always anticipated for pl20 applications.
Unless anyone can post a pic of the repro sets with 2 types of downtube decal, I suspect Gremlin has done what was required!!
-
Unless anyone can post a pic of the repro sets with 2 types of downtube decal, I suspect Gremlin has done what was required!!
I have to say I've never had the need to get a set of these decals but I can't imagine that a regular punter would be expected to trim them down to size but hey, I learn something new about BMX everyday :LolLolLolLol:
-
makes sense frosty but like marty says you shouldnt really have to butcher your own stickers especially with no prior warning from the seller, and at the end of the day no ones gonna win any prizes having joined up decals on a frame are they, it really sucks, ps does anyone know if firebird does repro padsets?? :)
-
So my guess is that the cut down was always anticipated for pl20 applications.
I did think of this straight away as i realised the down tube decals were probably for the PL24" application.
But as said I wouldn't expect to have to butcher a decal, to cut 'n' shut it to fit.
Nowhere does it state i was going to have to cut chunks out of it , to fit my frame, in it's discription.
Even then i may have accepted this choice. But the sellers whole attitude of "it's your fault", "shut up and go away" has got me baying for blood :knuppel2: "My frame and forks must be fake", or "You probably don't even have Redline Pl20 there"!!! >:( :idiot2: :knuppel2: :tickedoff: :uglystupid2: :2gunsfiring_v1: :Aresehole:
I know each set cost about a tenner. It's not the money now. It's the principal >:D G.
-
I thought the chainstay bridge came in 83, for the PL's have I been mistaken?
81(RA serial number) for the complete Jap made Carrera complete bike, but the PL20 frame set was still being built in the US ( it's the US frame sets that have no bridge at the chainstay) and long into 82, not sure when they stopped though ???
Carrera give away...
Brazing the drop outs ;)
If any one else has any info on these frame sets, please chip in, it's taken me some time getting this material together... even more info would be even better :daumenhoch:
As for the decals, you did right to cut them up... I'm pretty sure that is the only set you can buy, and from what I remember, it was a balls up... just like the rest of the stickers Redline and BMXSTOP did...
-
I'm still a bit in the dark over my frame and forks then ???
I have a Redline Proline II frame and forks. No letters before the digits in my serial number. A gusset behind the seat post tube. My rear drops are welded.
So from what i can gather so far, Mine was never a Carrera build as the rear drops aren't brazed on. Also it's not an early one as i have a cross member between the chain stays. Am i right in this thinking? ::) Anything else we can nail down? ;) G.
-
Hey Gremlin... If those are the factory stickers you removed then I think it's a late 82, because in 83 it would look like this...
Check out the frame on the far right :daumenhoch:
Frame at the back
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/v337/2elliot/f5b5c530.jpg)
Same as yours, but 83 stickers...
So, I would say they made your frame type from the end of 82 into 83...
:daumenhoch:
-
i'll add a bit more to the info gav, according to my tracking number from usps my frame and forks has been sat in customs at heathrow since 10.30 am tuesday morning :knuppel2: i just hope the 83 model didnt come with coke and crystal meth filled downtubes !!!!!!!!
-
Thanx Ron. I'm happy to think my frame and fork set is a late '82. early '83. That's exactly around the time when i first heard of a Redline Carrera.
With me and a mate arguing in class whether a Diamond back Harry leary turbo (me), or a Redline Carrera (him) was the ultimate machine. Almost come to fisty cuffs infact lol. I'm still winning with 2 turbo's to 1 Proline in the house 8). This proline is well under my skin now tho... Seems like they're under most of ours the way this thread has been running.
Hey Daryl... Sat in a warehouse up at Heathrow (sounds a bit "Cool for cats" - Squeeze 1979).
At least it's in the country at last m8. Won't be long now. Mid morning tomorrow it may be on your doorstep. ;) Or not... :D
Don't forget to have the digicam fired up. Looking forward to seeing another build on the go. G :daumenhoch:
-
about a year ago i sent an email to the redline rep asking about correct 3 colour prolineII stickers. his return email indicated he was looking in to it.........................what a load of $hit.
if the best they can do is reproduce some crappy, innacurate stickers then they do not deserve patronage. my repos were better than their crap. if they spent half as much getting their sticker sets accurate than chasing copyright infringement, they wouldn't have the infringement in the first place. imagine proper looking sticker sets and pads made by the proper people at a sensible price. .......................it's ok now, i've had my medication, chill!
hey Ron, whats on your BB id for that brazed frame?
-
Cheers for clearing that up Ron. I was looking for those pics when the question of the gusset was first raised I just couldn't find them.
Mine is an 83 Carrera II frame, I just have to decide if I'm going to get re-chromed or not, but I have everything I need to complete the build now :)
soon to look like this but with straight bars rather than V's
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/y91/frosty_paul/Redline/84carrera2.jpg)
-
Ron's right about the decals , the only official ones are BMXSTOP/Redline licensed ones and they are normally the wrong lengths ( I bought RL20 decals and the downtube needs cutting = BMXSTOP ones ) .
My PL will probably be done for MK08 and will be a little different to most ;) .
Likin' the blue/chrome Ron :daumenhoch:
-
It would have been nice to be forewarned about the decals being the wrong length and requiring cutting to fit. If as the seller stated has supplied hundreds of the decal sets, he should be aware.
I would not have sourced these couple of sets if i was informed about needing to cut 'n' paste.
What made it worse was the way he told me i must be some kind of retard who doesn't know how to fit decals and not know what bike i have...! That's my main issue.
I may not even stay with this decal scheme. Originally i was looking to put the red/yellow fade set on. And if a good quality set surfaces i'll probably pick a set up for the future. ;) G.
-
Gremlin,
It may be that no one other than you has actually gone back and mentioned the problem, fair play to you though for bringing it to the attention of a wider audience. I guess in the absence of the oe decals the decision is do you apply a set that needs cutting to fit a 20" or a colour run set that are not very good quality??
-
I see where you're coming from Frosty m8. The decals debate is now at an end. :-X The seller is still a gobshite tho >:D ...Sorry.
-
finally picked her up today from the friendly dispatch type persons, after a long old wait and an extra 50 quid import tax(choker) i can now get to work on my first resto!!!! chrome is not in the worst state however there are a few deep gauges on one side of the downtube which were not all shown by the seller but will hopefully get covered by decals, other than that the minor stratches should (with a lot of rubbing and autosol) come out i hope!!!! any info on the frame will be welcome any advice on small but deep scratches gratefully accepted also many thanks to everyone on here who has helped and advised me so far:daumenhoch: (http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/aa193/kowalski74/DSCN0604.jpg)(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/aa193/kowalski74/DSCN0610.jpg)(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/aa193/kowalski74/DSCN0607.jpg)(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/aa193/kowalski74/DSCN0606.jpg)(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/aa193/kowalski74/DSCN0605.jpg)oh and can someone please tell me how the hell you get the top and bottom bit of the old headset off , please :) at least i think thats what it is?????
-
Nice 1 m8. Lovely isn't it ?
Where the headtube is flared at the ends it's hard to get in behind the cups from inside the headtube isn't it?
I used my trusty block of soft'ish wood on the outside of the headtube (butted up against the cup). Then twatted the end of the wood at different points til the cup had moved out enough that i could get my socket extension bar in behind the cup inside the headtube. Then finished em off. :daumenhoch: G.
To be honest tho m8. I don't know what others would think. But if the headset cups are in decent enough condition it may be worth leaving them in and using them with your Beartrap set. I may have with mine but the cups left in the frame were pretty mullered. Just a thought.
-
cheers mr g, i thought a bit of wood would be in order, they are not completely mullered but seeing as the beartraps are brand new i may as well give it a go, shame about the deep nics on the downtube, im just hoping the old cut and shut decals cover them, looks like im going for that look now if i like it or not!!! :daumenhoch:
-
you sure it aint a cut and shut frame mr kowalski, you better get your work bench in the bathroom as you spend so much time in there. :Aresehole: :10_2_12:
ps i hope thats not my mint speedy j cd on your carpet :knuppel2: :knuppel2:
-
The decals should cover the nics on your frame m8. I've one tiny little nick on the downtube also. But mines dead center on top of the tube. If i managed to get a set of red/yellow fade decals it would've been covered. So for now it still shows. I can live with it for now tho. ;) G.
-
nice words moohan, as for the cd it was a copy of the new grindhouse a completely unwatchable waste of yet another three quid that could have been put towards a set of pro v's :) ps speedy j is in the wagon m8 :smitten:
-
`it`s not worth the paper it`s written on` them there moody dvds.
-
grem i have been rubbing furiously since last night, the chrome is coming up but some off the scratches just wont swift, i am currently writing this with extremely dead arms!! i think in one place im even rubbing some of the chrome off,, did you get every single scratch out? if so im sending her your way :)
-
A lot of the lighter scratches did come out or are now not so obvious now because of the shine. Especially along the top tube. But the heavier stuff especially along the forks will never be polished out, not leaving the chrome intact anyhow.
After that much work on it i'd say you should just stand back and be happy with the effort you've put in bud... Pics? :daumenhoch: G.
-
pics on the way in the morning m8, certainly looking a lot more healthy than before, ps got the old headset cups off with your wood technique, thanks a lot m8 :daumenhoch: have you found pedals yet if so what you going with? also any joy on pads and handlebars
-
Don't go too mad with the autosol as there have been a number of discussions about how abrasive that stuff is. You could try the old tin foil trick for any little rust spots, but to be honest looking at the pictures posted your f+f is looking in great survivor condition as is, certainly better than mine and I'm still undecided whether to get rechromed or build her as is!
-

Glad it's coming good m8 ;). And as Frosty said yours looks in sweet condition in your first pics. so it must sparkle now 8).
As for pedals m8. I'll be putting a set of my XcII's onto it. Pads i've not even seen any yet. Bars... I was going for a set early this morning on the Bay. I was at work so they ended up getting away from me. but i'm still keeping an eye out. Like i said before "No rush" ;D G.

ok new snaps, actually looks better in the flesh, camera setting is probably wrong

Don't worry about the gap yet once your spacers are on and you crank the nuts up, the gat will close - all quite normal so far, frame looks very good :daumenhoch:
-
cheers frosty nice words, chrome is ok you know but its not mint, i may build it up first and see how it looks before i decide whether to get it re chromed or even powdered :daumenhoch:
-
You're going down the immaculate/pristine route then? :coolsmiley:
I did consider it myself at the point when the frame and forks turned up. Then i saw the state of the finish.
I toyed with the idea of re-chroming or powdering. but as you know i thought better of it and decided to do the build with the original tatty chrome finish. All be it polished up as well as i could by hand. ::)
I'm looking to build mine up with very few nos or minty parts. Used, but in good condition is my build plan.
Apart from chain, brake cable, grips and maybe freewheel, which will be new. The rest will be used.
I've a couple of mint builds here... All very nice, but a build that looks like it's been through the mill, has character from the start.
Or so i think at the moment :LolLolLolLol:.
Cheaper too, as well as more readily available. G :daumenhoch:
-
the thing is gav its my first resto and although it not a show bike i want it to look as new as poss so im gonna use as much nos stuff as i can in the most neutral colours ie silver wheels and hubs and probably black everything else, now i have caught the bug i can always use the bits later on on another build if necessary :) still not sure about my flights though you have seen them already(white arms) i may have them powdered black instead of a re chrome not sure yet m8, oh just got a paypal refund from bmxmuseum saying the pl stickers are out of stock!!! only a week and a half after i ordered them,,, i fooking hate that, ps just seen your leary me and my friend moohan both love that bike to bits you have got great taste :daumenhoch: that bike is the dogs undercarriage :4_17_5:
-
howdy all
got all this from the u s of a early today, just put it together for a dry run let me know if its the right way round :-\

as for the 185's was considering a black powder job but after speaking to a pleasent fella in hayes called gary i may go for the chrome option(the price price helped)
finally the 44t and almost full set of decals, blimey gav i think i have caught the david bailey bug from you ;D ps chrome and cameras dont mix this lot look much better in the flesh
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/aa193/kowalski74/DSCN0621.jpg)
-
Yeah, the b.b is set up right m8 :daumenhoch:. I see what you mean about the finish on the crank arms ???
That chainwheel is sweet. I want 1, I want 1, I want 1. :smitten:
-
phew, yeah those arms certainly looked better on the bay didnt they!!! oh well all in not bad money i suppose do you know what i mean about the chrome in photos it makes everything look shyte :) i thought you had one of the chainwheels mr g?
-
You've a 44t bubble script chainwheel there m8. Mine is a later chainwheel, with the later font. Gotta get me one like yours.
Yours also has the recess around the chainwheel bolt hole so it fits over the threaded sub for the bolt. Mine doesn't. So it doesn't sit flush and i'll have to put a spacer in between the front of the chainwheel and the back of the drive side arm... bummer ::) G.
-
yeah you dont want any of that modern day rubbish!!!!!!
must say its in far better condition than mine though, mmm maybe that too is off to the chromers ????
-
thats coming along very well kowalski
cant wait to see it complete :4_17_5:

I love this thread, its like the great Proline build off.
Wish I had had time to do my third one at the same time as you guys,
btw great pad set, very jealous, you better let vinoah put them in his vault >:D
-
You're right about this thread Ratty. I can see it running for a long time too.
It's nice having more than just the one build on the go. With Kowalski and i being able to bounce ideas, build status, parts finding etc of each other, as well as the rest of you fellas.
Are you sure you couldn't find the smallest bit of time to maybe move to your third build Ratty. Or even a pic or two of your new frame and forks? :)
I'm well happy with the padset. Takes me another small step closer to being able to do the final build up. G. 8)
-
It would be nice to have a crack at it, but its the worst frame I ever bought, so its gonna take 2 weeks to de rust it, and twist superbike Dans arm to powder it in candy :smitten: red plus I havent got the cash like i used to have to spend on parts, I still havent completed my Stu Replica, its only waitin a few bits, but I should finish it first.

come on ratty, fire some pics up, get your new one dipped and get it on here twos company three is awesome!!!!! :daumenhoch:
-
That's one sweet looking bike... :daumenhoch:
I was thinking of building a R.l replica. With the white Skyway Tuffs, Star bars, Grafight X pedals etc. Maybe even down to the Star spangled Flite pad set. I do love the look of it. Then again it's not too hard a job to move some bits around and finish it like that. Maybe in time for M.k :) G.

After- Later 800P style

-
Very nice Paul m8 :daumenhoch:
What was going on in the 1st pic, someone tried to give it the E.t Kuwie look? :daumenhoch: G.
-
Bought it stickered up as an 800PXL. I think someone had tried to modernise an old PL, the white was added later, probably to cover scratches on the rear end. :)
-
Does look nice now. How come you went for the 800p style Paul? Something a little different? 8) G.
-
I was going to use the black & red decals (the ones that don't fit >:() and some v bars. Got the fork lifter bars cheap and decided to go for the newer look, Scott Clark at the Kelloggs series :)
-
grem
soz mate ;)
twas a bit early didnt read it right
PL RL ;D
and gmac
is that yours? :smitten:
-
Nice bike, what is the serial number? looks mid to late 80s... nice forks... Chunky :daumenhoch:
-
just thought i'd get a few more snaps in of the old girl now shes got her make up on, many thanks yet again to monsieur grem you are a legend, and extra special thanks to

-
Nice 1 Kowalski m8. That is looking special already :smitten: G.
-
To all the guys building a pro line up at the moment
Remember the fork blades are made of glass, make sure you use washers inside and outside the drop out so as not to flex or bend the drop outs.
I have just snapped another pair of forks :'( :'( because I forgot to put two little washers inside.
So on you travels Bren and co. if you see a pair of PL forks (any condition except cracked) LMK Thanks
-
and gmac
is that yours? :smitten:
Sure is :daumenhoch:
-
thanks for the warning ratty, i am one of those people who always over tightens stuff at the best of times :daumenhoch:
grem cheers i must say i am pleased with it so far although there is a large amount of chrome especially when the flites are done, may go for black stem, brakes and seat to break it up a bit should key in nicely with the pads set, kind of know it should be red but just hoping it will look ok, what do you think?
oh and saw the frame on the bay that is very nice :)
-
Your colour scheme sounds good m8. Same as mine basically. Can't go wrong with chrome and black, it always looks class.
There's nothing to say you can't swap and change parts/colours when the whim takes you anyhow. It's all part of the fun :daumenhoch:
Strange about the fork dropouts. I half expected them to be bullet proof. Thanx for the tip Tony. I'll make sure i don't miss my inside washers out. ;)
-
Wow... that looks very nice :daumenhoch:
-
That is coming along very nicely.
Now about those Carrera Pads, where on earth did they appear from, are they the real deal or newbies? I know it took me an age (not to mention the readies)to get some NOS Redlines, but really want those Carrera ones ;)
I think this thread has made my mind on which build is next, just need to dig out the f+f and re-examine the finish to decide on re-chrome or polish and decal up a survivor.
-
The pad set just appeared in the For Sale section Frosty m8. Andy (funmonster) gave me the heads up to let me know they were there, and i was onto them like a shot. ;) Paul the seller said he classes them as originals, and that he bought them 6 years back from some matey in Germany :) But they've never been on a bike.
They should arrive at some point today i think. So i'll get some pics up once they land.
It'll be nice to get another pl20 build on the go Frosty. So dig the frame and forks out m8, get some pics up, and the more the merrier :daumenhoch: Gav. 8)
-
The pads turned up about 5 minutes after my last post. Thanx Paul m8 :daumenhoch:.
I've checked them up against scans of known original padsets and they're totally spot on for the toptube and stem pad. I don't have a scan or decent pic of an original v-bar pad. So if anyone could be so kind... That'd be cool ;)
In real light the lettering is a nice dark red colour, which is supposed to be right.
So i'm well chuffed now.
A couple of pics...:smitten: G.
-
:4_17_5: wow i want one of those !! great work grem that is looking top draw,
have you picked up any v bars yet ????
-
No v-bars yet m8. Still on the lookout. ::)
I'm not going to let the build suffer over waiting for a set of ultra rare Stu thomson bars. So will probably finish initially with some other brand of decent sized v-bars.
I will also be on the hunt for a straight bar pad too. Just incase i decide to put a set of white Skyways and a set of G.h.p's Star bars on her to replicate R.l's Pl20 freestyler :daumenhoch:
Just tinkering at the mo with 2 Dia compe callipers. An Mx1000 and a Dia compe 1020 (identical to the 890, but longer reach).
Thinking of going with the 1020. It's 1.5oz lighter and looks a nicer, compact, lighter calliper. :-\
Have you any further thoughts on your parts list Daryl m8 ? ??? Gav.
-
no mate, im pretty much out of funds at the mo, have been hitting the plastic heavy recently and have just dropped the cranks and chainwheel off at the chromers so the spending is over for a bit, unless a bargain comes up!
will be going for v bars hoping for a nos set maybe the small redlines in chrome, or slightly bigger set of wins ? must be chrome
redline fluted post( if they actually exist!!! i reckon they r just a rumour)
black kashi aero
black stem, pro or tuff neck (did consider a forklifter but its just all wrong)
black mx 1000 preferably maybe just rear
tyres unsure any tips gav?
grips unsure too possibly ame's
pedals also unsure
also my bloody prolite is up in my flat at the mo and every time i look at i start thinking of changing something, its never ending....i think i need some kind of bmx counciling ;)
-
It looks like a nice parts spec you'll end up with there. ;)
Def got to be just a rear calliper as far as i'm concerned. I was going with an Mx1000, but am leaning towards a D.c 1020 now. :)
This is the 1st build of mine that i've not even considered having a brake up front. I can't say i recall seeing any members pics with one either. ???
As for tyres. I always go with Comp III's. But there's plenty of types to choose from.
Ame tri's are nice grips. I have them on a couple of builds already, and that's what i'll be going with for the Proline.
I'm the same as you, wanting a tuf/pro neck stem. The rest of the build has to be basically spot on as original. Brute stem are out there readily available...
Yet we want to put an out of place stem on? Cool >:D
I'm really looking forward to these builds (and any other members who decide to take the plunge) coming together. :smitten:
A little Pl20 family ;D G.
-
Kowalski,
Knarler Knobbie tyres were oem on the later carrera's, but any era correct tyres will be fine.
Here's a pic of the redline fluted post, the other one is a tange version that looks very similar but as you can see is not as long, this could be an easier option to get first.
-
I've seen the spec sheets/adverts etc showing the Knarler Knobbies on the Carreras. I never actually used a set of them.
Are they up to much ?
Reading through old specs for the same era PL's for Stu thomson etc. The Knobbies had been swapped with Comp III's.
I have an original fluted post also, that will be going away for a rechrome. So i may pick one of the Tange items up for now too. :) G.
-
i got no complaints bout the knarler knobbies
they work fine for me,
and i raced on them to a :4_17_5:
i have always presumed ,and although comp 3,s were very popular then (everyone and their granny used em)
that the magazines in question run the comps coz of the full page ads and the money
ploughed in to fund the said mags thru advertising
plus test rider preference must come into the equation
if you catch ma drift say ................wahey :)
-
Congrats on your #1 Vinoah :daumenhoch:.
I see what you mean about the Comp III's. I may try and pick up a set of Knobbies for my build then. Just to try something new :) G.
-
Put the Knarlers on it :daumenhoch:
The Redline seat posts come in both short and long ;)
-
thanks guys for all the advice,
i too will check out the knobblers, as for the comp 3's is there a specific make you can recomend? i have seen tiogas floating around the net but any tips are welcome
frosty let me know when one of those fluted posts of yours come up for sale please :daumenhoch: preferably the redline :smitten:
-
I used to run a 2.125 Knarler up front , 1.75 Comp 3 or 4 rear .
-
fellow redliners
i bought a set of nos odyssey barefoots for the old rider which have just turned up, they look quite nice on and were cheap, does anyone know roughly the year of manufacture? i wouldn't mind using them on this build but fear they may be a tad modern
also just taken a massive gauge out of my pl20 downtube sticker...uuurrggghhhhh, i was only cleaning the bloody thing its so annoying , more expense and waiting time for new set to arrive >:(
-
The beartraps are a bit late for the PL, and if your building to ride, those things are savage and unforgiving.
But its your bike, build it how you like, i used them pedals till I sourced a pair of XC2s :daumenhoch:
-
hi ratty im talking tyres here not pedals m8, barefoots not beartraps :LolLolLolLol:
but as for beartraps i had them bitd as we were poor and i assume they were cheap, my shins have still got deep scarring today even more than from coming off my motorbikes i fooking hate them things with a passion >:(
-
:crazy2: :crazy2: must have been tyred when i read the post.
:LolLolLolLol:
-
:2funny: :2funny: :2funny:
my sides are hurting stop it
-
I picked up a pair of the barefoot tyres, cheap of the Bay also. No real use for them, just because i thought why not.
Bloody things are disintegrating around the beading ???.
I can't believe you've damaged your decal bud... bummer :( G.
-
Right then . I'm getting close to the point where i'm gonna lace my wheels up for the Proline.
My Rims have been polished up. Thanx sawzall m8 :daumenhoch:.
And i've a choice of two specs for the build...
Either identical to this...
Or just like this but with red nipples...
I am leaning towards the small flange, with red nips, that'll give the wheel set a flash of colour.
I think the small hubs will make the bike look more light weight, and bling. 8)
Any thoughts from you fellas? ??? G. :daumenhoch:
-
well then ;)
i,m split between the two
i like my flange large
but also into the sleek look of the small flange
the combo of red hub, chrome spoke, red nips, chrome rim works well
but the combo of chrome hub, chrome spoke, red nips, chrome rim is the one :coolsmiley:
dont need to worry bout clashes of colour annodised parts :'(
-
I love flange too ;D
How about black hubs with red nips??
-
I did think about black hubs with the red nips. I had the same kind of set up on my Cali' a while back, and it did look sweet.
I'm just going with what i have, or soon will have close at hand, to do the wheel build now. :)
I think i've just always been the small flange type.
The wife does love these large flange red ones, and if i don't use them she's going to commandeer them for the Kuwi E.t she wants me to build her... bloody woman. ;D G.
-
flites are back in my possesion, a lovely guy called gary over in hayes chromed them and repolished my 44t front and did the rear from scratch (without me even asking) for £25 all in, and they look beautiful :smitten: not sure about the stickers yet
and the frame defo needs doing now :'( money money money
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/aa193/kowalski74/DSCN0648.jpg)

-
They look sweet m8. I may have to send some parts up to him for chroming then ;)
The decals are the same as i'm going to put onto my 401's. The earlier style... Very nice.
It's coming together now isn't it.? :daumenhoch: G.
-
hi g, yeah its looking all good m8, shame the guy says he wont do frames, also me pads r done i got an email showing me the pics of them this morning and they are top draw too :)
trouble is i really shouldnt spend anymore dough for a bit even on the dreaded plastic but i want her finished...now ::)
what wheels did you decide to go with grem?
-
I'll have to take a look at your padset m8. Gonna be after a straight bar pad soon. :)
I've decided to go with the Low flange silvers with the red nipples for the wheels. But can always swap and change between all the wheel sets i have here :D
Like i said i may have to send a couple of bits to your chromer matey to be done. Is the work as good as it looks? :daumenhoch: G.
-
Is Esem doing the pads? If so how much, must get Carrera ones :daumenhoch:
The chrome job looks good and a fair price, won't do frames though :tickedoff:
-
frosty @£$%^$ did the pads mate will post pics as and when they arrive :daumenhoch:
gav great choice on the wheels im using small flange silvers too on ukai rims it will look lovely, :smitten: as for the chrome mate it is flawless on the crank arms, let us i know when you need stuff doing he is also a really nice guy,
also m8 did you see my post on odyssey barefoot tyres? any thoughts they look well nice on my old rider!!!
-
Yeah, i saw the post on the Barefoot tyres. They do look nice, but like i said mine were falling apart when they arrived. I've got bare beading in places. So they're stored in the attic now. ???
I will let you know as soon as i decide to get these bits done. Thanx m8. Gav :daumenhoch:
-
Hey K, he knocked them out quick... send me a pic :daumenhoch:
:police: :buck2:
-
hey ron thanks for the advice i have modified the post :daumenhoch:
pm me your email addy again for pics m8
-
I've been in contact with the company and have had issues like decals, padsets etc explained to me.
I've also had the usual "It'll be on our list of things to do" reply :).
Still not very helpful, but at least i heard it from the horses mouth :LolLolLolLol: G.
So now... Who out there is gonna repop this decal for me..? >:D
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/f376/greml1n/redlinestrbars002.jpg)
-
dont tell me they are your new stu pro v bars ? if so you are a jammy b@st%rd!!!!! :'(
-
:LolLolLolLol: No m8. I don't think a set will be falling into my lap that easily. It's just a pic of the decal :daumenhoch: G.
-
phew, mate roughly how much is a rear mx1000 nos brake in black with nos tech 3 lever and cable worth ! i have just gone a bit silly on us ebay ::)
-
To be honest, I couldn't say. There's how much it's worth to you up against being a silly price ???
C'mon ... how much ? :) G.

great find cressy :daumenhoch:now its time to get your hands dirty :)
-
ok these will hopefully be the last incomplete pics i post of my resto, just awaiting rear brake set up, and am currently deciding whether to go for nos small redline bars, or a set of replica pros ie wins, tiogas ? advice always welcome, just missing stem, saddle, pedals, chain, and tyres oh and grips :-[ that'll be another 500 quid then ???
oh and really want some advice on which number plate to go for chaps,
:daumenhoch:
-
loo ;)kin good kowalski!
-
Looking good Kowalski m8 :daumenhoch:.
I've a set of Tioga bars on the way for my build. They're a nice size and will be a good alternative until a set of Stu v-bars turn up.
I'm still short a Stem, Grips, Chain, Kashi Aero and a Bubble script 44t chainring. I will get there eventually tho. 8)
May get to pick something up at M.k this weekend towards it, will get pics up if i manage to ;) G.
-
Kowalski,
Are those Carrera pads the embroidered ones?
Looking good so far though
Paul
-
nice one gav, post some pics up of the tiogas when you get them m8 please, im torn at the mo :daumenhoch:
as for you eidins what you up to ?are you home yet or are showing the boys what a real build looks like :smitten: :smitten:
frosty they are just printed ones mate :daumenhoch:
-
Kowalski ,
Go Pro size whatevers until the right ones appear , little bars look a bit silly on PL's ;)
IMO .
-
thanks for the advice mr dubb, after careful deliberation and a firm word from mr grem, i am awaiting an invoice for a set of nos tiogas!!!
cheers boys,
next issue is number plate it is a must have for me, quite like the haro circuit board, i have just bought one for the prolite, so will see how she looks, .......any other suggestions? :)
-
Anything but the circuit board  Its your choice, but i think they look out of place on the PLs
-
Anything but the circuit board  Its your choice, but i think they look out of place on the PLs
I'd go along with Ratty on this one. ;)
I think i'm going to go with my Tangerine Haro Flo panel. It'll burn yer retina's out at fifty paces :LolLolLolLol:
There are plenty of decent plates out there to choose from.
But if you should happen to find a White Haro Series One... I wouldn't bother with that either, In fact you should probably send it to me so i can dispose of it for you... ;D
Also Matt' is right about the small bars looking silly. Those ones you showed me were only 22" wide. ??? That's tiny m8!!!
The Tioga's are a good option. That's why i'm going with a set as a stop gap. A nice sized, lightweight, well put together, set of bars. 8)
G. :daumenhoch:
-
back home mr little (kowalski), turn your phone on tomorrow so we can speak, hopefully picking up the db this weekend.
-
I like the Circuit Board plates , personal preference I guess but era correct for quite a few PL's on here .
Personally I'm not into the way I've seen of making one look older by putting older decals on it but that's just me :-\ .
-
moohan nice to have you back, great news on the db pick make sure you fire up some pics on your own thread, this is strictly redline!!!!!
also have a word with grem if you have any questions on the build hes got a harry leary aswell as the pl , bloody show off ;) and hes well friendly, :daumenhoch:
-
not redline related but hey,
got up to mk at about 2pm yesterday just in time to watch some of the os races, what a cool event obviously most of the good stuff had gone by the time i got there but still managed to pick up a couple of cheapies!!
met some really nice guys andy funmaster, stodgy, mattdubb, firebird ,the list goes on
also spent a good hour trying to find mr grem(where were you gav?) got told you had a black t on with your name on the back but both i and the mrs couldn"t find you anywhere :-[
also wanted to meet ratty (who was tied up with the racing) and big ron but no one seemed to know if you were there????
anyway enough babbling i cant wait til next year when im defo camping and os racing :daumenhoch:
thanks rad for a fantastic day :4_17_5:
ps gav i voted for your leary, and the mrs voted for a white redline possibly rattys?
-
Daryl m8. I'm gutted i didn't catch up with you. I was there, probably hiding out of the sun in the show and shine area.
I wore the black t-shirt with Grem' on the back on Saturday. I thought better of it on Sunday and wore white to help with the heat. 8)
Thanx for your vote bud. :daumenhoch: It looks nice in real life doesn't it?
Anyhow PL20 related. I've been here today lacing my wheel set up for the build. A big shout out to Sawzall (phil) for doing the polishing job on the rims. They look mirror like. :coolsmiley:
I managed to pick up a stem at M.K too. So the build is now on it's wheels with a stem 1x Comp III so far, and finally managed to source my flight crank arm decals. So all in all a good weekend. I'll get some quick pics fired up soon. :daumenhoch: Grem'.
-
hi gav, yeah the leary looks the absolute nuts m8 congrats thats a top build, :daumenhoch:
what stem did you source? i was hunting through all remaining stuff but couldn't find one :'(
all i have got is a set of the old tiogas on order so im well behind you now, but am looking forward to seeing your photos v muchly! get em up asap
also did you say you had a couple of spare brake cable holders(the metal ones) ? if so could you pm me a price and your paypal addy again
-
Hi fellow Pl lovers, sorry I didnt get much time to chat, I was busy abusing my PL on the track, I even managed to jump it a few times
There was some lovely redlines there, The white one was probably Jimwises, which is the nuts!!
I managed to buy a redline pad yesterday, I will probably never get the set, but hey I got an original yellow pro line pad :daumenhoch:
I also bought a few orphan wheels to play with this winter as well as some little bits an bobs..
-
Just stumbled across this PL from the V site and thought I would post here, it looks the nuts, has and ESP stem and uses Robinson pro bars, so may be an alternative for you Kowalski!!

Mmmm, that's nice :smitten:
For now i'm still glad to be keeping the original chrome finish on mine. Even tho it's a little tatty in most places. ;D
But that does look the dogs danglies :daumenhoch: G.
-
I sat relaxing yesterday, mulling over the mad weekend, with a big grin on my face lacing the wheels for the Proline.
It's coming together now. Slowly but surely.
I've put the stem i picked up at M.K on her. Thanx Lee m8 :daumenhoch:
I'm still waiting on my Tioga v-bars to hit the doormat (bloody postal service) :knuppel2:. Once they arrive i can then fit the calliper, cable and lever. As well as stick the Araya decals onto the rims.
I am still on the hunt for a Redline bubble script, 44t chainwheel, and a black Kashi'.
Here's a few pics of the build as of this afternoon.
I've cropped the back end of the bike out as i only have a cheapo tyre on the rear 'til i decide whether i'm going to source a 1.75 or a 2.125 Comp III for the back end... ;) Grem'.

Looking good Grem.
I have just got the hubs I need for my wheel build for my Carrera II.
Don't get a fatty for the rear stick with a 1.75 for sure

Very nice Cressy m8 8). It's good when you get your hands dirty and you start seeing results.
My bars turned up this a.m. Very nice thanx Mark (cbrgil) :daumenhoch:. The decals for the Arayas are also spot on, as always m8.
So i've been tinkering today, again...

I've fitted a set of Amé Tri's onto her. Also an Aero saddle until i find a decent Kashi' aero to fill the job.
At some point when my Redline fluted post is rechromed, that'll be going onto her too. 8)
Another couple of items off my list dealt with.
I'll probably fit the Dia compe pre bent lever, Dia compe 1020 calliper, and cable tomorrow. Once i remove them from my chrome Leary that i ran about on at M.k. All is good :daumenhoch: Grem'.

:smitten: :smitten:

lookin' sweet Grem :daumenhoch:
-
mm looking fantastic grem
almost there m8 :smitten: :smitten:
-
Thanks lads :daumenhoch:
I'm still deciding how she's going to be finished off. Tyre wise that is :-\.
I made a decision about the brake calliper and added the Mx1000, instead of the Dia compe 1020 calliper.
Although that can always be changed over depending on my mood. >:D
It'll all come together soon enough. There's only the one part i'm on the hunt for now... that bloody bubble script 44t chainwheel :D Grem'. ;)
-
Grem, i like the black with skinwalls. only because the gumwalls look too "yellowish" and black walls look too vintage for a mid eighties build. comp 3 skinwalls are pretty easy to get in 2.125 and 1.75. try Ginny's in the US, they have a good selection and reasonable postage cost :daumenhoch: http://home.comcast.net/~ginnyrini/gr2.htm
these pics show what i mean regarding the sidewalls. 1st is gumwall and 2nd is skinwall, both have comp 3 tread pattern.

Skinwalls every time for me, unless you can get a carslile agressor front tyre, like Stu used to run bitd :daumenhoch:
-
GT... your bike looks great!! real oldschool with the high seat :daumenhoch:
-
It's black with skinwalls for me too lads :).
I've plenty of rainbow label Comp III's sat around here on various builds. Which i can use on the bike.
My choice at the moment is over Comp III or Knarler knobbie. I think i'm def going to go with fattie and thinnie. It's just which make. :-\
The Knarlers were standard issue on the Carrera. But i've always loved the Comp III's ;).
I've a rainbow label on the front at the mo (2.125), and a cheapo Wilko's job on the rear, just so it's sat on rubber while i decide.
I'll fire some pics up later in the week with what i decide on wrapped around the rims >:D G. ;)

Since there are a few PLII's appearing, thought i would dig mine out of the loft. I have owned this one for 24 yrs since new. I just wish I had rescued it from the loft a few years earlier, as unfortunately the chrome is too far gone. Even beyond the polishing skills of Grem this one! :LolLolLolLol: Which is a real shame as the decals are the originals.
Cant decide what to do with it...at a guess i would say its going to be a powder coat in either white or candy red. Any suggestions?? Also deciding how to build it.. Whether to build it as it was or go for a new look with NOS parts.

please, please, please do not paint it. all it needs is a bath in some oxalic acid (the stickers should be fine) and a bit of autosol rub down. buy some nice used components and hey presto instant survivor that will be way neater than a carpet warrior with hundred dollar bills of NOS thrown at it.
does your serial number start with RB?
-
Yes..
RB 01693
-
ok......late '82 with the BB brace :daumenhoch:
-
wish i had one of those in my loft tricky :daumenhoch:
wish i had a loft :D im with gt on this one good bath and used parts, although tbh i would rather a white powder job the only thing that would stop me doing it is those lovely stickers, either way its a top bike :daumenhoch:
-
Mmmmm, that's nice Tricky :)
I'd say an acid bath, and then polish her up to see how it looks. :coolsmiley:
I wish my decals were in that condition when i made my choice :smitten:
Another resto, and build for us to follow... Sweet ;) G.

I think you 'll all agree on closer inspection that this is beyond a polish, the chrome is blistering on the forks. Despite being kept in a dry loft it seems to have formed a rough salty textured coat, a bit like oxidation. Its the only one of my frames that seemed to suffer this, which seems kind of strange. Mind it is the oldest but only by a couple of years.
Regarding the stickers, no one seems to make a repo set exactly the same as these. The main frame decal is all one, joined by clear sticker over the top of the tube. Also the REDLINE logo seems larger on these originals.
-
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/dd48/richardg27/Picture227.jpg)
Same on the drop outs with this bloody "white coat" oxidation going on
-
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/dd48/richardg27/Picture230.jpg)
And the same on the forks......... :'(
-
That's a shame !
Whichever way you look at re-finishing her now... the decals are history :(
It'll have to be sent to have the chrome removed if you decide to powder it. So i suppose you could consider a re-chrome as it'll be at the shop anyhow. They do look sweet in white powder tho.
Your rear drops are set slightly different to mine... They look brazed too? Are they? If so i think that points to it being a Carrera frame :) Grem'. ;)

Not sure Grem...
From the frame no. RB I have been told its an 1982 frame, I got it either late '82 or early '83. The stickers are the originals and frame was one of the Japanese produced ones. Which I dont know is good or bad :D
-
As you say Grem the dropouts could be brazed .
Tricky , cool loft keeper ;) . Check out Ron Burgundy's brazed drop outs on his PL ( could be in this thread or here somewhere/museum ? ) .

Cool lofft keeper!! Think the loft has a leak..........The drop outs are brazed
-
Being brazed means the frame set was manafactured in Japan. Usually for the Carrera kit.
All good stuff :daumenhoch: G. ;)

I suppose it could be a bit of a give away. :LolLolLolLol: G. :coolsmiley:
-
i know this may be a rough shot, buuuuuuuuuut....why not try and get the stickers copied before they are destroyed in the replating, painting. (i'd still try and clean it up as a survivor, but that's me ;) )
then get a few sets made up, sell a set to me for cost  and the rest at a huge profit as they are a very desirable sticker set with the correct 3 colours.....................and of course we will all be very quiet about it in case you know who finds out >:D

Bmx plus magazine from Oct '82 says this in it's test write up.
"Not all Pro line frames are brazed-only the ones that come from Japan in the PL-20 Carrera kits". G :)
-
Gotcha... thought you had a bit of Redline gossip then ;)
-
So did Carrera's come only as complete builds, or could you buy the frame and forks alone? :D
-
Carrera was the name given to the complete bike. ;) G.
-
Its confusing this..
Mine has brazed dropouts and is made in Japan, suggesting its a Carrera....however it came brand new as frame and forks badged as a Proline II...who knows
-
Do you know what year you bought it?

Do you know what year you bought it?
Hi Bren,
It was definately 1983...
So which model is the most desirable? I suppose I could build it up as either a PLII or Carrera. With a Carrera tho if it was prebuilt there will be less flexibility on the parts i can use to make it as correct ???
Dont suppose it really matters 20 + years on, i am thinking about something a bit different to the rest but era correct,,,,,Any suggestions??

1983? the Carrera 1 ( your frame set) ran from 81-82 so I guess the shop it came from could have split an unbuilt Carrera(as it was the old model in 83) and sold the frame set as a PL20.
For me, the most desirable is the Carrera 81-82... but that's what I wanted as a kid.
As you got it as a frame set, build it how you want, I'd try and keep it period, early 1980s, but that's just me ;)
-
i'm with ron on this one. the 1981-'82 (ones without the BB brace) seem to be the rarest.
on the brazed dropouts being for carerra, i believe it didn't matter whether it was a carerra or prolineII f/f set. i reckon you got what ever came off the rack first. therefore if you want to build as per the carerra ad or a customised prolineII (with era correct parts) it won't matter. as you can see by my pics i did the latter.
on another note...i've been searching for another f/f set and found quite a few of the real early prolineII's (without BB brace) had the tear drop dropout fork. you can tell the difference between 1979-80 frames from the 1981-82 frames by the size of the head tube triangle brace. the earlier triangle braces were smaller.
-
Almost there now. I sorted a spacer for the chainwheel last night, and all i'm missing now is a brake cable (i cut the one i had too short) :idiot2:.
Here's the latest pic with her flanked by my two Leary Turbo's... 8)
She'll be taken for a decent thrash tomorrow me thinks :D Grem'.

The frames without the BB brace are US made and only available as a frame kit, the Proline upto 1980, the Proline II into late 82, maybe even later. The bottom bracket shell is stamped with numbers only, no letters.
The frame with the braised dropouts was made in Japan from 81 to late 82, they started with the RA serial numbers, it also has a really thick BB shell, this was probably to do with the sealed bearings not sitting in any cups, but pressed directly into the frame  This frame was only used on the Carrera complete bike. For 83 the Carrera changed to the Carrera II, this did not have braised dropouts, and the BB shell was now a lot lighter duty, the frame used for the Carrera II, 'the PL20 frameset' , was also for sale on it's own as production of the US made frame kits had now stopped.
I would say the frame with the gusset behind the seat tube is the most odd (late82-83?), only seen a few of them, then again I've only seen 3 with the braised drop outs. But people want Americana, so the ones without the BB brace tend to go for more money...
If any one knows any different, then please... fire away :)
Those early Proline frames are class, like a cross between an MXII and a Proline II, I think the top tube is something like 21" long due to the position of seat tube... i.e. kicked right back, and they go for pennies on ebay too ;)
-
looking good mate, bring it over to the old poole track for a thrash :daumenhoch:

looking good there Grem............for gawds sake stick a chain on it ;)

The chain fittting is always the topping off of the build for me ;) So that'll be in about 30 mins :daumenhoch: G.
Paul m8. Give me a shout into next week and i'll bring it along to hit the old Poole track with you ;) Grem'.

As you all know I love my redlines, and my third PL20 will be the biggest resto I have attempted, Its in very poor condition, with the chrome flaking and deep rust.
Heres the pics of the frame, pretty much as it arrived a few months ago. I will be powdercoating it once I have done the prep work, I fancy a candy red as opposed to the two chrome ones I already have.

Back in 1981 I raced with a guy called Tony Slater, he went on to become one of the first pro racers in the UK, and recently he has started racing again, we have a laugh and joke about our old bikes, he told me months ago he still had his carrerra in the shed!! Well he dug it out today and brought it down for us to see. Flites, pro neck stem , one DX and one XC2 pedal  and Gt bars. Tony is racing at the British Championships next week and was going to try and restore it in time. Maybe 2008 Tone :daumenhoch:

He he.... a PL20 Build off - I like it!!!
Been reading this thread from the start with great interest... and now I'm in on it!!! lol
Look what you guys have just made me buy.... everyone's gone like totally Proline crazy!!!!!
Crappy small pics I know... will post up some better ones when it arrives from the states. looks pretty good from what I can see!
No letters before the serial on this one just 502365 and the Redline Oval. Has the triangle behind the seat tube area though so I'm guessing 84/85 with the yellow and orange decals! Going to go back to the nicer decals with the white outline after the re-chrome!
£198 inc shipping from the states..... have I been done? (don't care if I have. lol)
Better watch out tho guys... I do a nice Redline build - check out my NOS MXII below... yummy!!!!
Game on guys!!!!!

-
John, nice MXII, what's the serial number?
-
Cheers Ron,
I'll check the serial tonight when I get home... still at work and don't have a mac at home!!!
Got an early NOS Frame & Fork set as well, which I'll never build.... just look at and smile.... love my MXII's, for me it was the best all round racing and jumping Frameset back in the day.
Looking forward to doing this Proline build though! Had one of those too way back when but found it too big when I was 5 foot 2 so always prefered the MXII.
Looking at this thread it seems there are plent of Redline freeks as well as me!! lol
John

I just picked an MXs frame up in white, badged up as a proline so I will be wanting an MX2 sticker set in the near future

Hey Ratty,
Interested in a set of these for your MXII build? I produced these from my NOS MXII - 100% accurate! Full wraparound and USA CroMo sticker too! Plus u get Red & White fork decals. White backed Headtube decal as well!
Tried selling them on ebay a while back and was threatened with a lawsuit by Seattle Bike Supply so had to pull them! Pissed me off cos the "Official" Redline sticker sets are all shit... none of their sets for any Redline models are accurate at all. Graphically incorrect and as some of you have found out, don't even fit! I did some correctly sized RL20 Prostyler sets too but didn't get slapped for them for some reason?? Sold some of them to a few guys here on RAD. Done some Powerlitedecals for a resto I sold here and Scorpion Decals (for MartyC).
Wadda ya think?
Cheers
John

Very nice decals there.
You're right about the official redline repro's all Sh*te!
-
Hey GT,
Yeh I'm probably going to do those decals pictured! Are they originals? Not sure because the downtube decals shown aren't a one piece wraparound sticker?? The trick is trying to get hold of something original to work over! I usually carefully peel any damaged decals off the frame/forks, stick the remains down flat on card, scan em and work over them. I don't see the point in working over reproductions as they usually aren't right!
I don't suppose you kept the remains of the ones you peeled off your frameset did you? It doesn't matter if parts are missing!
Cheers
John
-
was just gonna say, keep this private guys :police:
-
forgot to mention that the seat tube sticker on that set i got pictured, is the one piece wrap around. it was quite a good copy. just a shame the right people won't do it properly and thus force us to find our own means :idiot2:

I can get you the wrap around originals off my frame set to copy, see pics earlier in thread. Its only the fork stickers that are missing.
Just pm me your address John.

thirtysix if you can make me 2 85 pl 'redline' stickers which are actually the correct length i will be over the moon and will recomend your skills to the muppets at redline who don't seem to even have tape measures at their prestigeous offices
anyway pm me if you can do them they are the downtube ones and i may even treat me old m8 grem to some too im sure he would fancy a set :daumenhoch:
-
Ooh.... PL20 in the paint shop, oh yes :daumenhoch:
-
It will be nice when we could have a choice of top notch decal sets. Whether they be licenced or moody :daumenhoch:
I still prefer to eventually have the yellow/red fade set on my frame and forks. 8) nudge, nudge ::)
It's going to be cool to see these Prolines coming together. Especially with different colour combo's in the pipeline too. :) G. ;)
-
Just to add to this thread, My PL20 raced the British championships yesterday, and survived, not bad for a 25 year old bike, made a few people look :2funny:

Did someone say 600a?....
Cool :daumenhoch:
-
600a is a model based on the mxIII frame set which came out in late 1982. the grey/black pads would be correct. there's a good write up of it in the december 1982 issue of BMXA magazine :daumenhoch:
nice one Ron :smitten:
-
We've a nice collection of Redlines coming together now :daumenhoch:
I still haven't topped my Proline build off with it's chain yet. I think i'd prefer to wait til i pick up a 44t bubble script chainring first.
Get your pics fired up Kang m8. The more the merrier ;) Grem'. :D
-
i received my second PL-20 frameset the other day, so i'll be selling my white 1983 mxIII (done with 600a stickers) and black 1979 mxII frames. the '83 has tange TRX fork (painted white) and the '79 has chrome tange TX 1200 fork, both come with headsets. pm me if you're interested in either.

-
looking sweet, kowalski :smitten:
did you polish the rims up yourself?
-
hi gt, yeah did the rims myself although they aren't quite finished yet just need a good buffing with the old pink wax stick, they are not the best but were quite scratched on the edges :-[
also did the pro-neck myself that was in a right state, a kind of pink ano with a lot of rust and a couple of gauges, will probably replace the centre bolts at some point, i had to polish them both due to major sheering :daumenhoch:
-
I know there not for sale yet ,but the way things fly out from the `for sale`section i thought i`d get in there early , i dont have such a luxury of being able to stay on rad allday. :daumenhoch:

Sling yer hook, with your freestyle bars Mr Frosty... this is a race bike thread ;)
Get yer V Bars out for the lads :daumenhoch:
Wanna sell 'em? ::)
-
Have been looking for the v bars, but I've had these puppies for a couple of years now and they will get on the Carrera soon!!
I still need to decide on a re-chrome or clean up for the f+f first :-\

It would be a shame to trash those stickers. What's the chrome like?
-
the chrome is not too bad, the forks have a few scratches and scrapes and there is a couple of places on the frame where the chrome has chipped. I'm sure from a couple of feet it would look fine!
I have these decals already to go for it though ;)

redline chrome is poo isn't it but it seems to clean up fairly well, my problem is most of my components are nos or nearly nos, my frame however isn't, its the old toss up of whether to spend big for a rechrome or get the autosol out and be happy with what you have, mine too has fork scrapes and the odd scratches but hey it looks lovely and im not entering it for any shows!!!
as for all these stickers people are starting to post on here
i want them all..... :-[
ps ron ..........i like carpet :daumenhoch:
-
Hey guys,
Just took delivery of my PL20 from the States today.... pretty pleased with it bearing in mind it's going to be re-chromed!
The dropouts are nice and smooth.... no grooving whatsoever! Redline Oval stamp on BB but no letters before the serial number!
Going to start work on repro-ing the decals tonight as I know some of you guys are after a set of the Red/Yellow ones... at least I've got originals to work off so they will be exact... 100% accurate!
.... and a bonus Red, Black and white Headtube sticker was stuck on the seat tube so I can get to work on that too! :)
I'm going for the Red, Black and white decals on this as they have more of an Old School look in my opinion.... that style was more "my era"..... just got to get my mitts on original seat tube and downtubes sets but nobody want's to part with them! :(
Anyways, here's some pics of it as it came.... let the PL20 tournament commence!!!

Nice one. The chrome may just clean up nice as is without the need for a rechrome, assuming that is not peeling round the headtube!! Looks very similar to mine, just mine does not have the gusset behind the seat tube.
-
:LolLolLolLol:
Ya didn't need to rub it in about the triangle seat tube gusset mate.... I'd love one without but this is all I could get a hold of!
Reed a rechrome though as it's peeling around the headtube and another couple of spots!
So do ya wanna part with your Red, White and black decals then buddy?
John
-
That's a nice looking frame set you have there John :)
I personally like mine having the triangular gusset behind the seatpost tube, and with your's missing the letter before the serial number, it's just the same as mine. :coolsmiley: A little different from the masses is cool i.m.o 8)
Your chrome on your frame looks way better than mine when it arrived. You've the same problem as me with the front drops tho (with the chrome peeling) :'(. One day mine will be powdered white, i've decided. Just not yet. So i'm happy to live with the drop outs for now.
I like the idea that the yellow / red fade decal sets may soon become available. I'll keep my ear to the ground >:D nudge-nudge :daumenhoch:
Although i'd probably be tempted with buying a couple of each set, of each type that become available. Note to self... i will decide on a scheme one day.
Daryl m8, yours is looking sweet now it's coming together. The Pro neck looks the buisness. :daumenhoch:
Mine may actually be finished off tomorrow. There's a good chance i'll attempt to race it at the Bournemouth meet on sunday.
In at the deep end... Just what i like to see ;).
I'll fit the chain tomorrow and take it out for a bit to see if it's as good a race bike as i'm expecting :smitten: Grem'. :)
-
John,
Was not meaning to rub it in, as I think the gusset is rarer anyway, plus it would have been put there for a reason ;)
As for the earlier decals, I'm keeping them as the basis for starting to collect the necessary to complete an original Carrera too, sorry.
Paul
-
Hey Paul,
Yeh can't blame you for keeping those decals... sweet!!
Any chance you could scan them for me though? Would be much appreciated!! ;)
John
-
John,
I can't scan them at the moment as the scanner is storage until we move back into our house following re-modelling, but thereafter no problem.
Paul
-
i don't think i can use either of those other decals due to a long scuff down one side of my downtube which is currently hidden by the longer 85 set, shame :'(
good luck gav if you do race yours and im glad you are all finished m8 :daumenhoch:
i want to see some nice detailed snaps from you, i have actually managed to re work that new set of decals you sorted me, by instead of just having a straight join i carefully cut around the edge of the end section where the black meets the grey
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/aa193/kowalski74/003-1.jpg)
you can just make out the join after the curve on the grey section but it certainly looks a lot better :daumenhoch:
-
like the join in your syrup kowalski :LolLolLolLol:
-
this thread aint disapearin'
-
this thread aint disapearin'
I'm with G.t on this >:D
I like the way you've taken the time to blend in the join on your downtube decal Kowalski. Very nice m8 :daumenhoch:
The set i have on mine at the mo was never gonna be permenant anyhow. But it still bugged me they weren't a proper job :knuppel2:.
Does anyone have any updated pics on their PL builds? New parts, colour changes, new frame colours etc ? I need a fix :smitten:
I'll fire some new shots up once i've topped my build off. I'm still looking for a 43-44t chainring lads ::) Grem'. ;)

So what's occouring then lads? Slipping down through the pages here :-X
No real update on mine as yet. I've decided i'm not topping the build off until i manage to aquire a 44t bubble script chainring.
I want it to be finished right and it keeps the hunt and the project going a little longer :coolsmiley:
Any news on your builds peeps? Pics? Gav. :daumenhoch:

My new project has been put on hold, Soperbikedan cant powder over mine without stripping the chrome first because it is in a real state, so I have to do that first, anyone know a cheap chrome firm near london?
-
Has anyone spotted this on ebay :daumenhoch:
-
Man that is a sweet Redline.... yum yum!!!
My PL-20 is at the chrome platers as we speak, though I'm going down to inspect the polishing before the plating just to make sure it's a minter.... there's some tricky areas to plate on these frames, mainly under the gussets - plus mine has the annoying triangle plate behind the seat clamp area which will need carefull attention me thinks!
I'll post up some pics when it's back from the platers.
Not managed to find any original Red & Black with the white outline decals as yet though... slippery lil suckers to find they are!!
John

Very nice, US Proline... cool as funk :daumenhoch:

My Proline has just gone onto Ebay, reluctantly.... i have been looking at it and wanting to restore it for the last year but just have'nt had the time. However I did dig out my brothers old MK II from the folks loft last week. That is complete in Candy red and original stickers. It is an interesting looking bike...with good spec, gold components, Uni Turbo Seat etc....I will get some photos posted of it soon.
Kowalski, well done on the build, brilliant job!!
-
I have seen that on the bay tricky, have you got a price in mind?
-
I have seen that on the bay tricky, have you got a price in mind?
Its gonna be roughly around the £200 mark I would think. Had a couple of buy it now offers in that area.
What do you recon?
That MK II is the one I was asking you about last year, I was not sure exactly what it was at the time. We had 2 BITD, there should be a white one somewhere too. Just frame and forks tho as it was stripped back then for my MP20.
-
Tbh, I think the price is reasonable, well maybe slightly high, but worth it....
I cant wait to see the pics of the MX2, I have got a white one now but I dont have the time or money to finish it yet :-\
-
this thread is NOT dissapearing into oblivion ;)
an up date for you's. i received all my stuff from vert, now i'm still waiting for my frame set to be returned to me and the wheels to be laced. i should have it finished by late November :coolsmiley:

ratty thanks for sorting the bearings mate they are going on the next project as and when :daumenhoch:
-
i think they are rarer than the xcII's because there are less sets advertised. it didn't really take long to find them on ebay, but lets just say i made sure i won them ;)
"suntour" search on worldwide ebay brings up some nice finds.

Hey guys,
Just got my Proline back from the platers so thought I would get some pics up and keep the worlds longest thread goin..... :LolLolLolLol:

What platers did you use cheeky? thats sweeeeeettttt :4_17_5:

Wow that looks fantastic, does it look that good in the flesh?
who did the chrome work?
-
This is the guy I used:
S.H metal finishing, Unit 3 145 old lane (off ashton road) Openshaw, Manchester. 0161 371 1876 ask for Len
Yeh... it looks just as good in the flesh!!! A couple of tiddly bits here and there but I am a fussy f****r. Just the odd small area of "golding in the tight spots.
I have to say I spent a day on it myself too, polishing in all the nooks and crannys where Len's polishing wheels couldn't get in!
He's a top bloke though and I wouldn't hesitate in recommending him.
Not sure whether I'm going to go with the Red, white and black Proline II decals or the Red - Yellow fade PL-20 ones?? Which ones I go for will dictate the colour scheme of the bike me thinks!!
Cheers for your appreciation fellas!!
John
-
thats a very nice chrome job
-
That looks very good what sort of money does he charge, and does he reverse the process to strip old chrome? Could be worth putting in the good and bad chrome platers thread. I'm waiting to receive my Proline frame and forks that has been painted over the tired chrome.
-
That looks truly awesome :smitten: I'm looking forward to seeing that build come together 8) G.

John,
The frame looks like new.
Can you pm me about how it was when you received it. I had a f+f done by Len a couple of months back and to be honest am not too happy with the finish just not sure if it can be fixed by extra polishing or it needs redoing :(
Thanks
Paul
-
Hey Frosty,
The frame was pretty poor when I bought it buddy.... chrome peeling everywhere and marking on the dropouts etc. Took it to Lens and he de-chromed it and gave it an initial polish. I then took it away and got to work on it myself. Spent a whole day on it getting into the nooks and crannys that Lens gear couldn't get into, using loads of autosol, grinding and polishing wheels on a standard drill. Was really hard work but the actual metal looked almost as shiny as chrome when I was done. Then took it back to him and he went over it once more with his gear over the main tubes etc. Then it was chromed. It's a fabulous job but don't get me wrong it isn't flawless... but I am really really fussy. The chrome is slightly gold around the hole on the rear brake bridge, back of seat clamp area and under the front triangle gussets. Would say it was a million times better than the chrome you got on Redlines back in the day... looking back it was quite poor really! Overall I'd give it 9.5 out of 10 I guess. I always find Len really helpfull... maybe give him a buzz and see what he suggests buddy.
Cheers
John
-
I may do, it really is the post chrome polish I think as he seems to have run a polishing wheel across the rear drop out without going between the seat and chainstays >:(
-
As far as I know Frosty... once the frame has been chromed there is no polishing done at all!
Cheers
John

yeah i went for this one as well but i couldn't justify more than $55us plus $25us postage for a pad i don't have a frame for yet :buck2:

Does anyone do early Proline decals and do they say Proline on them anywhere or are they just like Squareback decals? Never seen an early Proline that says Proline on it!

the first one here is the earliest, 1979/80. the next is 1981/82. after that they were known as PL-20.

Those are the ones, it's hard to read the proline text in the black and white pictures out of old mags! Where does the decal just under headtube decal on sheet go? Also how many of the small ovals are usually fitted and where. Has anyone got a decent pic of a 79/80 proline with the decals fitted? I'm thinking of doing mine like an early 1980 Stompin Stu replica.(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41/the666devil/stu11.jpg)

gotta agree ron. that was the very first issue of bicycle motocross action i ever bought, which may explain my preference to redline and Stu ;)
the little oval proline products sticker will be for the front of the fork where you would normally bolt front brakes on and another will be for the handle bar just underneath the v-bar on the left hand side. the other 2 you can use were ever you want.

Forks looking sweet there, cheers for decal placement advice. Who does the 79 decals and 79 pads. P.M. if you can help? The only problem with that Stu build is the Graphites, may have to dye my Tuff II's and paint hubs. Or consider painting frame and forks in Redline yellow for something unique, this idea is copyrighted! :coolsmiley:

John
yes the colour was as close to the red bars getting around as possible, except with a bit more fleck through it. i don't mind due to it being a custom build as proline II was never offered to the public in colours anyway. this will stand up as my best detailed (and most expensive) build yet and i'm really looking forward to finishing it.
i approved the stickers today and should have them in my hands next week :coolsmiley: pm me anyone who's interested in proper '81/82 stickers.

MR GT that is sweet as a nut, I'm liking the extra sparkle... very nice :daumenhoch:

Is there nothing new that I can come up with? Old schools been done to death, and then some. How on earth did you get yellow pads or were they dyed? Had another thought fit the new Graphites with the stick on covers. Dread to think how much old school graphites would cost. I knew that yellow would look sweet, your photoshop skills are better than mine. Roll on page 30 :LolLolLolLol:
-
GT, Im loving that, my forks are done, but the frame is on hold for a bit until I find a good chromers who will strip and polish it for me.
The yellow pads were available on the earlier pro lines, I have a handlebar pad, but not a full set :-\
you can just see it on my race bike

Ratty i need THAT plate  :LolLolLolLol:
i've just bought a 1986 800p frame set and plan to put the forklifter set on it :daumenhoch:
-
GT the funniest thing about that plate!! I got it from the states, nos in the bag last year for about $20. Last month one went on ebay for $180 :wtf:
If I ever let it go, I will give you first shout :daumenhoch:
-
Theres a very convincing Forklifter replica plate made by a guy off Vintage bmx on Ebay.com. Is it possible to get U.S. postal orders in U.K. at a currency exchanger or similar. Theres a guy with vinyl pads but he only accepts the above no Paypal. My frame and forks finally arrived today, think the postie had been competing in the OS series. The paint finish on the frame is quite good, the forks are chrome and very presentable, dropouts are great. My usb ports not recognising camera, bloody technology, so heres the pics from the seller.Yes I know it has 86 RL 20 decals on it but not sure why. (http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/d41/the666devil/6d53_1.jpg)(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/d41/the666devil/6fb9_1.jpg)
-
Nothing wrong with the decals ;), here's my pl20 with 800p decals.
Wanted to do something different to the norm, 800p should really have chrome forks/ rear stays.
Change of pedals and stem then it 's finished 8)

The decals are badly scratched on the forks, slight scratch on headtube. Its all down to your riding era I suppose, your heroes etc. You didn't win the pads then, would he not post to U.K.? BMX Products North West won't do Repop's if anyone can do good vinyl ones give me a P.M. Ta
-
Didn't try with the pads, too lazy! Will try for some repros.

Holy crap, stu looks a pretty bloody old 21in that mag!

That was so random I had to Wikipedia it, face looked familiar like, looks like one of the "League of Gentleman" (but isn't) I remember Jilted John like.
Back to Prolines and fittings what on earth do MKS BM1's look like, Stu's foots on one and the other is blocked by his leg. Would BM5's be similar, Skatepools got those?

BM-1 has the correct 2 struts between the cages. the BM-5 only has the one strut and is shorter. both are era correct for early prolines and way cheaper than KKT footjaws ;)

i missed on the "tab" forklifters on ebay........bummer :'( i put in a solid bid as well.

What are my chances of finding STR bars over here. Theres some straights on the bay in U.S. but I want V's really. Spoke to Steve via P.M. he's not got artwork for 79 pads and is busy at moment. Really I need bars before I can decide on pads. Theres a few straights and one V bar pad up at moment.
-
that vendor on ebay is making it difficult for us non americans to bid, not only on the pads but other useful stuff he has. basically it looks like he/she dosn't want to pay the paypal cut. that's his/her perogative but it sucks as i don't believe a true bmx collector would do that. greed in our hobby yet again.
making repos sometimes is the only way around it, or be very patient as others will come up from TRUE collectors who ARE interested in helping others in this hobby.
the two 1981 redline padsets that i have took about 14 months to find (and more money than i'm willing to admit to myself :D )
then again i've got a couple of metres of white vinyl and a 1980 proline sticker set sitting in the cupboard keen to become something ;D
-
I've still got a Carerra frame and forks, brute stem and full set of original vinyl pads for sale if anyone is interested. Price suggestions welcome :daumenhoch:
-
Well some of the vendors who have the pads take paypal, but just don't deal international. Just been knocked back on some velcro ones (I know they're wrong era), knocked back on a vinyl bar pad. offered good postage rate on some STR bars, but will the customs stick it to me on them, and how much will it take to win them? Going to have a go at a straight bar pad, sellers got good rep on http://oldschoolbmx.com/community/index.php? I need to finish cars off and sell them to afford childrens cycle parts. ;D tpsman7 and fasteddybmx seem to want to buy all Redline pads known to man.
-
Just been givin a pic, which you PL20 lovers will enjoy, it was taken in 1982 in Ipswich, It features Keith Wilson, riding Stu Tompsens bike which Keith was given as part of the deal, Me getting T boned, mine has tuffs on, and Tony Slater, riding for Diamond Back but hated the frames.

excellent, excellent Ratty. those BITD pics are an excellent scource of info as well as being super cool.
i hope you didn't let that snake bike beat ya ;)
darkslider, if ever you come across a set of redline JT racing pants on ebay and i know about 'em, you better go BIG my friend :LolLolLolLol:
i love your jersey, mate. jealous i am, yes :daumenhoch: and i can't help with your customs as i live in Aus.
-
The only surviving frame is the one being ridden by Tony Slater (Diamond Back) He brought it over to show us a couple of months ago, still in reasonable condition, loose ball flites with odd pedals ::)
I cant remember how I got on after gettin bittin by them two, but I doubt I escaped that :-\ worse than 796 with attitude

Get it chromed and then powder coat over the top, easy for me to say, This new builds gonna clean me out.
GT I missed out on some Redline pants the other week, paypal account was too low on funds. They weren't JT Racing though, can't see anyone removing the JT logo. Did anyone else make copies?, or they were possibly a Redline customer product. I can fit into a 30" waist still so could get away with large childs size. :P
-
Cool pic Ratty, check out the super wide bars and motobike lever on Stus old bike :daumenhoch:

More questions which is correct reach brake for Proline MX900 or MX1000. I'm off to the motorcyle breakers looking for rusty levers off Hondas. :idiot2: The one on my 84 Honda CR250RE is alloy! :'(
-
thanks for that b45t4rd, excellent link. those forklifters aren't cheap anymore :'(
not sure on the pants. they could have been JT in the early years then moved to MAX about '82 ish. i'll have to check my mags to see. some of the pros had their own sponsors as well. so Stu may have been MAX and Ruminer JT.

The build I'm doing the posts crossed each other. OOPS I've not got a squareback, thought it was same as a 79 pad. Nice score though?
-
Help has anyone got dimensions of STR V bar think I've found a set but they're anodised. :-\ The width is 27" and from bottom of bars to lower part of V is 7". Never seen anodised ones though!
-
STR's are Cromo , you can't anno Cromo .
Ally V bars pop up reasonably regular , dimensions are smaller though .
-
The standard Redlines are 23" wide are they known as Microline bars, or just Redline V's, didn't Kusuki make them and they're usually stickered Redline. My memory ain't what it was. :idiot2:

Vert-ego had the kusuki ones in stock recently, they are not stamped though, only a sticker

Kusuki Redline bars do have the Redline stamp...

My STR type Redline bars...

I think Redline made the STR bars alongside the Proline bars. STR bars being an upgrade for your lower spec bike, my 83 600a came with Prolines, but at the same time Redline had the STR bars on the Carrera II, and the bars were available to buy from 82.

-
very interesting layout frosty
the STR,s & the SE look very similar in the sweep, although the SE has a higher cross bar & wider bottom to clamp
can also say the same for the GT & are the 2nd from bottom Profile?
i have used for racing the STR & the SE & i prefer the STR tbh
with the jolly stomper endorsing them ya cant go wrong :coolsmiley:
-
The STR bars with the straight cross bar remind me of S&M Slam Bars.
-
:LolLolLolLol: am i the only one here who thinks it's just wrong NOT to have a v-bar on their early redline ;)
-
No straight bars aren't right, but mine has a chainstay brace so why do I want to build an early Stu rep? Can we have a Proline register? I'm going to contact my local M.P. if we can't!
-
I did start one last year but I only got a handfull of frame numbers :-\ It needs to be a sticky to work
-
I can only give you my serial, will that help? How can we have so many pages on Prolines and not enough interest? Maybe its only the chosen few who know class when they see it! 502867 anyway none of those Japanese R prefixes here. ::)
-
I will get my three listed at some point, just need to scrape the mud off my race bike :2funny:

if you mean the white one in Adelaide, it's an early one.........not a prolineII.
damn ron, if only a couple of months ago :P
-
Steve,
Bars 2nd to bottom are Champ Pro's.
Ron, that f+f set up looks sweet so must be something good you got your eye if you're prepared to let that go :daumenhoch:
-
No the chrome one you linked to before its on Australian bay but is in America? Early Proline not Proline II yes. If shippings right money it saves me chroming mine!

ah righto. yes the one you're looking at is in the US but he's shipping worldwide which is why it turned up on my australian ebay search. good luck with it :daumenhoch:
nearly forgot.........it is a prolineII, but an early one without the BB brace hence the tapered fork and large head tube gusset. probably 1981/'82.
-
Forgot you were in Oz as if your signature isn't enough of a hint, love watching your touring cars. Ours are gay front wheel drive crap, bar the odd BMW and Lexus. :daumenhoch:

Passing on the Proline the shipping is $240 doollars :wtf: the Proline bars have been cut down :Aresehole: I'm not bitter as you can probably tell. :LolLolLolLol:  :angrysoapbox: On a happier note I've found a Chromo fluted post! :daumenhoch:

that postage cost is bullshit :2gunsfiring_v1: sounds like he just dosn't want to send o/seas :tickedoff:
when i first saw the auction 4 days ago, i asked for a postage quote and i'm still waiting.
i have bought about a dozen frame sets from the US now and i know postage is going to be between $50-$70 us dollars.
chin up darkslider, there will be others ;) unfortunatly some of these bozos who make it difficult for us don't seem to understand that :2funny:

Yours is same era as mine just nicely turned out, I need an unbraced chainstay early version to do the Stu build proper. Besides you probably don't do 3 years interest free finance. ;) Anyone want to swap a car for some Graphites? :daumenhoch: Have too add tonights acquisition. Needs a bit of TLC, "No I don't want no scrubs!"

that brute looks ok. not many hammer marks. the caustic dip and then a polish will bring it up nice :daumenhoch:
that non brace PL went for bugger all. probably because of his lack of PR :idiot2:
-
How on earth can it be re-anodised though what about the black top and raised lettering? Any good anodisers in Merseyside or Lancashire? At least I won't have this problem with bars, check em out, el blingo.

Brute can't be re-annoed as far as I know because they steel shaft is'nt removable ;)

OOPS do what with it then? Collectable paper weight or get a good colour match on it.

Strip it with oven pride/caustic soda (whichever you prefer - oven pride less dangerous), a really good polish and then if you want it red again, use glass paint :daumenhoch:
-
Cheers Marty can I paint oven window with glass paint too? Who sell it as well?
-
re-annoing the stem is possible. the shaft needs to be removed.
darkslider, check my 600a and you will see i used the same glass paint to do the head set. i did paint some DX cranks and they turned out ok, buuuut i didn't spend enough time getting the arms polished to a mirror and every slight blemish could be seen through the translucent paint. actually i was quite surprised how crappy the casting was on those DX's compared to some sugino maxy's i had.
-
Getting a glimmer of hope that stem can be anodised in anodising thread in Tech and Resto. I've found some bars and am unsure what they are? Redline oval stamp, other side has like a ball logo possibly a baseball!, and numbers 9.876, they are 25.5" wide, 8.75" high.

Not the Pro size bars unless they've been cut ? .
-
Cheers Marty can I paint oven window with glass paint too? Who sell it as well?
B&Q sell it or there are specialist shops on the web that do it. As it has a pressed steel shaft that can't be removed I can state without a shadow of a doubt you will NOT be able to get it re-anodised, I asked a number of places to be given the same answer when looking to get a DK stem anodised :(. The anodising process wil not work with other metals, steel parts have to be removed.
-
Marty,
You need to check the other thread, Paul at custom chromers says he has a special acid proof tape that can wrap around the shaft and also use bungs to block each end to protect the insides.

Marty,

You live and learn :LolLolLolLol:. I tried several places down here and was told this by Metro Plating in Uxbridge "Unfortunately no anodiser can anodise aluminium when steel is inserted into it. The part would have to come apart, and the steel removed – sorry!"
-
"Unfortunately no anodiser can anodise aluminium when steel is inserted into it. The part would have to come apart, and the steel removed – sorry!"
This is true, during the annodising process, a film builds on the raw aluminium, until the point where it no longer accepts electrical current.
The electrical equipment in the tank reaches a peak at this point, and shuts off.
As steel does'nt annodise, and therefore does'nt build up electrical resistance, the current will continue to rise, and will eventually cause damage to the part, or the plating equipment.
This is the reason why electro platers won't take this work on.
Aluminium based assemblies that incorporate steel, (e.g stems, brake levers etc) have the steel components pressed or riveted after annodising.
The good news on stems is that the shafts can easily be pressed out, and then back in again after annodising.

Dont know if you guys saw a thread I started on another site. Im trying to narrow down thebike I found (with no stickers) to the exact year.
Tons of peeps have been guessing at years and just slapping on decals they liked.
So I started a database for serial numbers. This is for NOS or Survivors etc to be certain we figure out the formulas.
Non NOS or survivors I can still add. But will leave the year Unknown till we have the coding down to a science.
http://www.bmxmuseum.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=30772
Ive already went thru all 36 pages of this thread and added the data I could find from it.
Im planning to further make it easier to figure out whats what when it comes to Redline with a project.
I have contacted Gork from Redline and Linn Kastan and have gotten about as much info from them as I could for now.
-
welcome racer ;) good luck with your quest :)

Great info guys ! I will have to go to my garage and dig out my proline now ... I will try and post pics

At a glance those PL-20 Stickers are incorrect!! I kept the originals from my PL-20 before my re-chrome and the Logo downtube sticker should have a square end with rounded corners.... that set has a completely rounded end to it!!!

Awesome, sun shining aswell, can life get any better for you lol.

That red PL is amazing, really nice work there GTO. Like the Weinmann rims, and using a centre pull brake shows a bit of era-correct ingenuity.
-
Very nice, I must make a new years resolution to complete my Carrera too!

i don't know Matt, it's missing. later than 1983 with the brace. so technically incorrect stickers but it dosn't worry me cause it looks so cool and i'm not into catalogue correct builds.
trying to find a non brace frame is difficult.
yeah the smiley thingies not working is annoying because i'm hopeless at writing emotions LOL

No Worries ( smiling smiley ! lol ) , I saw Woody Allens quote about "era correct ingenuity" & it did'nt quite add up . My PL will be a custom TBH but I'm gonna wait ref correct decals ( repro'd maybe ) hence why it's been painted nearly 12 months but not finished ! .
-
Is yours an early one then Matt or like the Carrera II?? and what decals you waiting on
-
Is yours an early one then Matt or like the Carrera II?? and what decals you waiting on
Mine's an 84 , the decals are the Red/Yellow fade correct ones . I've got a NOS set but don't want to use them on mine initially because it's been finished as non standard colour ( hence custom ) .
I've had my Red/Yellow set scanned & also Jon ( cheekythirtysix ) has his scanned but I'm no further than that yet .
-
do you have this red/yellow fade set for the down tube too?
If not I could lend mine out for scanning so that we can get some others made. That way I would build mine without a re-chrome with repro decals, rather than using originals on a frame that I may later want to get better finished!!

Why not? Just thought it looked like the sorta thing you could have put on a PL back then if you wanted to be different or didn't have the dough to buy the usual parts.
Okay it's not a 100% era-correct build but still looks darned nice daumenhoch-type thingy :-)

-
the only give away for my frame is the BB brace which appeared only 1 year after that sticker set. i reckon i'm close to the mark LOLLOLLOL(or something like that)
if someone does those 1984 sets i'm in for a couple of sets and can trade for a set or 2 with the 1981/82's i've done.
my originals are stored in a safe place and will NEVER be used on a frame.
Frosty i can get them done buuuuuut i'd imagine you'd have some sort of worry sending them to Australia LOL (i am not a used car salesman....trust me LOL)
another alternative is find how many sets people want and split the costs between everyone.
-
so is anyone going to do the 1983/84 stickers?
-
hey proline boys check this out http://bmxmuseum.com/forums/viewtopic.php?pid=267354#p267354

cold thread needs a bit of warming up ;)
i bought this 1981 US made frame/fork a while back and built it as a rider.
the brake bridge was squashed and the drops had a bit of mange.

i recently decided to retire the old girl and build it as a replica of my proline-II from back in it's first guise in 1982. this is one of the very few pics i have of it from back then, i do remember most of the bits that it was built with.
the frame was sent to a frame repairer in Melbourne, Australia, who did a wonderful job on it.

Stumbled across this thread and love a Proline also anything Redline. Got back into BMX about 3 years ago and searched ebay to see if anything was for sale. Found a 94 PL and bought it but really hankerd for something 70s. Something would turn up and out bid last minute lol. No big deal. A 79-80 PL then stumbled into my possession via Holland. Few other Redlines to.
One night last year on the FB Redline Appreciation site a picture of a 77 non gusset Proline appeared and my attention was up lol.
Contacted the seller and asked a bunch of questions, did some reaserch on it and the seller. All came back all ok. A friend knew the seller so wasn't a wind up. Both agreed on a price and trigger pulled, then the wait and worry sets in lol.
11 days wait and sleepless nights it had arrived in the UK. The postman nearly got a kiss, nearly! 😂
Customs to pay and collected from the depot I was a mix of exited and nervous. Got home and made a cuppa and opened the really well packed box. All as described and beautiful!!! Had to keep pinching myself that it was here.
Chip at C4 Labs was responsible for the restoration. It had been powdercoated red and a weird gusset added to it at some point. He cut the gusset out and checked it for strength. Powdered it white, should be painted and might put it back to paint. It had the wrong decals on it so new decals made by Delcals.
Serial number 06598 is one of 8 known to survive at the moment. 2 more have turned up and under 50 made originally.
Hope you like. Great thread!!!
Simon.
