Title: STU THOMSON REPLICA
Post by: RATTY on November 16, 2006, 10:21 AM
Can  anyone help. I have got a nice PL20 redline. I am toying with the idea of a stu replica!

From some of the pics of his bike he seems to be running a "rat trap" pedal, any ideas what make they were? Also does anyone know what brakes he ran with, being suntour sponsered I would assume that Dia Comps were not on the agenda.
I am also looking for a CARSLILE agressor front tyre, worn is fine.
Also if anyone does have a parts rundown I would be very gratefull. Thanks Tony

Tony, I have got a load of Redline pix, courtesy of Brenn. I can email them to you tonight.

PM me your email addy and I will get them over to you.

Those rat trap pedals can be bought from most online bmx shops, but doubt you will find them in black.

If you are being picky Matt, the decals are wrong too arent they?

No white edging.

Tony you can beat this "ultimate" build then!

Unsure about the edging on the decals but the pads & decals could be different era to the frame date ?.

I thought (I may be wrong) that the decals changed to the black and red ones (as in my avatar) in 1985. These frames were built 83-84. Mine is an 84 and it has the brace.

As I say I could well be wrong, im not a Redline expert. I just luuuuurrvvve 'em.  :smitten:

Wow, That is nice, my new one is without the brace on the rear stays, its got its original stickers down to the bike shop sticker!!!
The stickers on his one are later, but hey Stu rode them for a long time to things were gonna change!!!. I want to base my replica on the one stu brought to Earls court in 1981, the one Keith Wilson went home with  :'(  :'(  :smitten:

How hard is it gonna be to get Araya 7cs let alone 7bs...... :(

The 7B's or 7C's are around , mainly in the US & 'bay.com . Be prepared to buy any colour & re-anno here  :daumenhoch: .

Tony , at least a white Series One plate won't cost you much !  :LolLolLolLol:  ( or maybe white/red Haro Color plate ? , Stu used these often )  .

Actually the ends have the screws, so perhaps it comes off ? and the spindles can be changed.

I waited half a year for these babies and now sold the build that they were going on.  :LolLolLolLol:

If you interested, I'll see if the ends can be removed... & get some decent pics to you beforehand.

I was reading an interview on the V site with the Skyway CEO, he was saying that lots of "one offs" were made for factory and sponsered riders, so there is every chance they were truly unique!!!

i remember that BMXA run down on Stu BITD. i'll need to get the issue again if ever it surfaces. that F/F set would not have been the same F/F as on the replica. i'm pretty sure Proline II didn't come out til 1981. i believe that rep has the incorrect 2 colour stickers,  the correct 3 colour frame stickers are rare if available at all. the chainstay brace didn't appear until about 1983  :daumenhoch:

this will be a great build ratty. best of all looking at the pics of Stu's bike he didn't have anything too exotic on his Proline II. those graphite tuffs were on his earlier Proline, John Crews has the tuffs on his bike in the Nora cup pic.  Haro series 2 plate in red huh? goodluck  :LolLolLolLol:

Title: Re: STU THOMPSON REPLICA
Post by: Bren Gunn on November 18, 2006, 03:12 PM
It's not that hard is it?

Redline Proline frame & Forks
Redline Proline V Bars
Redline Brute Stem
Redline Elina seat
Redline Fluted seat post
Redline Flights 185mm
Redline Chainwheel 42 or 43th
Redline Vinyl pad set
Comp III tyres 2.125 & 1.75
Union,KKT or MKS rat traps
MX1000 brake, Terry Cable, Motobike lever, Finned Matty blocks
Suntour Seat clamp
Suntour low flange sealed hubs
Araya 7C or Ukai Box Rims
Alloy nipples
Double Butted spokes
Oakley B2 grips
Haro Series one,Clear with white front...

Try looking on the other sites...  Vintagebmx OSbmx or ask Subwax, he knows a bit about Redlines.

I would guess his bike changed every race, but the above should get you away...

Oh... it's Stu Thomsen :P

Bren ;)

Thanks Bren, I have altered the spelling mistake. Sorry stu if you read this.

So Bren if I go with that spec all I have to find is

Union,KKT or MKS rat traps
Finned Matty blocks
Oakley B2 grips
Haro Series one,Clear with white front...

Thats not so hard, plus i need the stickers he ran on the plate, the only one I will struggle with is the bike shop one! was it Ralphs?

Calm down you lot, and hello by the way, i'm new to this site you know!!

Just about to leave to go to the US for a couple of weeks but when i get back i'll dig out any bits left from Stu's bike & post the pics.

The pedals on it were real old school items even in 1981 & werent the ones shown earlier on this thread, he had them because they were the only pedals big enough for his feet!!

The wheels were quite special, much older era than the bike and the hubs are campagnolo, pretty sure i still have the brake on my torker so when i see it i'll tell what make it is.

He also signed loads of his trophies of his & gave them to me which i still have!!

Didnt know about the big 'C' thing though, can anyone tell me more???

Keith

Just had a look at the wheels from Stu's bike as i still have them on my unused (ok maybe once or twice) 83 Torker pro. & they are UKAI rims laced to campag hubs.

Def not ARAYAS as everyone else thought they were.   ::)
