Title: Hutch freestyle bars - crossbar size?
Post by: dancetothedrummersbeat on February 06, 2016, 05:51 PM
I have a set of re-pop (JDB) Hutch freestyle bars. I bought them a while ago for my next build, as a back up in case I couldn't decide on what bars to use, and/or in case some OG bars didn't come up for sale. I've decided to use them now, but the problem is that the chrome job isn't the best, there are a few small dings in the top bar, and i'm not keen with the chunky oversized top bar either to be honest.

(http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/af3/dancetothedrummersbeat/Hutch%20BMX/IMG_2412_zpsc762282c.jpg) (http://s988.photobucket.com/user/dancetothedrummersbeat/media/Hutch%20BMX/IMG_2412_zpsc762282c.jpg.html)

So the plan is to: strip the chrome, cut out the top bar, replace it with a new piece of chromoly tubing and get them re-chromed. The bottom bar is 5/8 inch (15.87mm) in diameter, so I've bought a piece of tubing the same size.

My question is: how does this compare to the ones on 80's Hutch freestyle bars? Mid 80's ones, not the ones with flattened crossbars. Could someone who has a set of OG bars and a set of digital calipers tell me the correct diameter of the tubing please?

Thanks.

Yeah both bars are the same size on originals, Ive just been out to measure mine I get a different measurment every time coz its fooking freezing in the barn/fridge but both are about 16mm 15.near enough 16 if that helps. :daumenhoch:

Excellent, thanks for your help. 5/8 of an inch is 15.87mm, so that's close enough for me. Once done, these will still be distinguishable from OG bars, as mine have knurling  :)

May as well grind off the knurling whilst you there........Blimey, seems like a lot of aggro...wouldn't it be cheaper just to sell these and get an OG pair?  :-\

Saw some knackered ones on the museum for $100, but they need the chrome stripping, a few dings sorting out, then re-chroming. Plus there's shipping from the US, plus customs & handling charges. As you say Ant, i never do things the easy way  :LolLolLolLol:
