Im sure some of you will remember me looking for an early lugged Marlboro frame a while back.
Back in October i got a call out of the blue and my long search was over, the frame landed and plans were drawn up.
House moves, Christmas, work schedules and a certain franch race frame with a stuck seatpost all conspired to halt the project but a length of 1 1/8th inch diameter steel rod turned up today and was the catalyst to get the ball rolling.
The poor frame had obviously had a hard life and some agricultural type had been running around on it without any bottom cup and bearings

With a nod of advice from Phil and a new toy in the shape of a planishing hammer, i spent this afternoon coaxing the flaired tube back straight using my heavy lump of 1 1/8 inch rod as a former.
This is set to be quite a lengthy build and as the title suggests it may contain some carpentry porn :D
Plenty more pics coming soon
-
Oh yes
And you've already built the pedals :daumenhoch:
I thought of you when I saw these a little while back
/>
-
Im shying away from wooden rims Griff but i did build a steam box today too. The chainstays and bars especially are going to be an interestingly steep learning curve. Ive only done a little steam bending years ago
-
damn . i ve seen abused bikes from the 1930 s in better shape . :D
the works the fun bit though right . :daumenhoch:
-
It took a fair while to coax it back but was strangely satisfying :D
Opinions on my inlay option 1 or 2?

Im more inclined to option 2 myself :)

2 looks more natural /organic.

Wooden rims though... :daumenhoch:
-
Is this a Time Team special?
-
Hoping to get a frame jig built tomorrow so I can get cutting >:D
-
Option 1 :daumenhoch:
-
Frame jig is all but finished. It wont win any beauty pageants but its rigid and has plenty of adaptability with sliding mounts in the base :)

Can't wait to see how this turns out
Going with option 2?
-
2 is looking the more likely, might wait and see which looks better against the copper ;)
-
Going to take a bit of time cleaning up the lugs. They all have a seam weld which looks like a friday afternoon job

Interesting thread, going to have to watch this one me thinks
-
Haven't got a clue what you're up too :-\
Gonna keep an eye on this though, looks interesting :daumenhoch:
-
Got nowhere fast today >:(
Turns out a lunch hour of filing gleans little in the way of results.
Tempted to alter the shape of the drops too or maybe drill a hole or two :chin:
-
typical Clintism... lets see whats he up to again....
-
3 hours of planishing and needle file work and it still looks shite. :LolLolLolLol:
At least the bubble gum seam welds are gone now. Hopefully the other lugs won't put up as much of a struggle

were the main tubes brazed in? looks like i can see a bit of brass. couldnt you try heating them to see if they come out or is that the size your working too.
-
They are brazed and my first thought was to try and remove them. After a chat with Phil I decided against it as the heat needed to release the joints is alot great than it is to braze. The extra steel should add a bit more strength too

To your snooker cue's ???

After measuring every conceivable angle, length and diameter i went in big time with the angle grinder. Those with a nervous disposition or children present look away now

Chuck some methelyne chloride in it :daumenhoch:

So it turns out paint stripper does work.... you just have to leave it overnight then resaturate it with another coat ::)
Anyway time to do something about those bubble gum welds and weld spatter. These things really were thrown together ;D

Almost ready for some wet or dry and a bit of polishing :daumenhoch:
-
Thought about reshaping the drops or drilling them but I don't want it to end up looking too fixie ish so the original drops are staying :)
-
Sorry i dont have any more pics. Sanding shitty old, low end, wanky welded drops is a complete arse >:(

That's what a dremel is for :LolLolLolLol:

Got bored grinding away with my dremel ;) on the drops so went back to the head tube today. Another lunch hour gone she is almost there and well pleased with the results given how badly flaired the fork end was :daumenhoch:

Top clean up job
-
Tomorrows job is to build the GT Pro bars jig for steam bending :)
-
did you just grind off the excess clint ?
-
No. It all got knocked back round a solid steel rod the same diameter as the inside of the head tube. I bought a planishing hammer to do it properely.
Took a while, but coaxed it back a treat :daumenhoch:
-
nice . oh . was it all out of wack inside the headtube ?
-
Some mighty fine fettling there chum
-
nice . oh . was it all out of wack inside the headtube ?
Yeah, because someone had been running round on it with no bearings the leading 5-6mm funneled out like the end of a trumpet
-
bereft of brains ::) . did nt they know you been looking for a fully lugged zapper for 3 yrs ??
-
you cold set it all >?
-
Yep. Luckily the edge hadnt flaired to the point of forming a crack

RESULT

Got quite a bit done today. Started off scribing the profile of the bars on some card as a template and cut some scrap ply to the shape. Just need to cut two wedges tomorrow to set the back sweep to the right angle in the jig.

The big steam event was a bit of a non starter. Fooking posh extension lead kept tripping out so will try again tomorrow with something a little older ;)
Gave me time to tweek the jig though with a few additional formers and turn buttons

Rich, the theory is that most timbers take around an hour per inch thickness in the steamer then you get around a minute to do your thing before it starts to stiffen up again
ooohh errr missus ;D
-
Whilst I appreciate that you have other things to do in your life like work and stuff , can you fookin crack on with this ?
I love a thread like this but have no patience and can't wait to see this done . Stop drip feeding us you bloody tease . Maybe if you stopped designing and making rad bike parts you could have this done in no time lol .
Again , great work mate
-
:LolLolLolLol: sorry bud this ain't going to be a quick turnaround. If it's done before MK I will be well happy. ;)
-
Here's hoping it will be done in time mate , would love to have good look at it up close .
-
Looks a ballache does that Clint :chin:

Tell me about it. Todays efforts resulted in some intersting looking kindling :LolLolLolLol:

I suspect a combination of a tight radius and the ash being kiln dried rather than green (undried) has stumped me today.
I have 2 dowels left and may soak them for a few days to see if it helps. I suspect it wont >:(
Thinking cap need a dusting off, would really like timber bars if possible :)
-
Knock some oak ones up :teef:
-
Looking like laminated thin strips is the way forward :(
fookin hate laminating stuff
-
Maybe time for some 4 piece bars i.e. Vector styled ones where you can mitre the joints, just a thought...
-
I did think that and they would be easy enough to do but I'm going for an early look and 4 piece bars don't really convey that. Might make a set anyway :daumenhoch:
-
I'm sure you can do it mate , like you said maybe a good soak will do the trick or maybe some green wood . Keep it up dude , I'm looking forward to your next instalment :daumenhoch:
-
It will work with green ash I've done it but still takes a good bit of effort, I was trying to make an old fashioned catapult :-[
IMHO as I'm not a carpenter I'd sack it off and go for laminate, would this also not have the advantage of being less susceptible to expansion and shrinkage, I've read that's a possible problem with the bamboo bikes.
-

Freestyle ones ???
-
If you're going to soak the wood prior to steaming. Would adding a wetting agent to the water help the water penetrate further into the wood and give you a bit more flexability?
-
Im not sure soaking does a great deal to be honest. The problem is that i bought all the dowels for the frame kiln dried which sets the lignin in the wood (the stuff that makes it flex) It cant really be unset by water thought water can soften the wood itself a little.
Made a jig for the slight S shape in the chainstays. Hopefully the curves are gentle enough to bend the dowels but i suspect i may need green Ash for that too :(

Get some metal tubes, belive they work quite well on bicycles

How early? VC8s were around in 82/83. ELF blast bars were much later but have no bends but would look out of place.

This project has been taunting me in the corner of the workshop for too long now. This afternoon I decided it was about time I did some more. 2 hours of polishing, sanding and repolishing and I finally got one side of one dropout to the finish needed to be plated :)

Next year though :daumenhoch:
Dremel and wet or dry Rich :)

Well, my spot of fettling for the lake ride trophy (and a fire at the big workshop) has got me back on the job. Got the fine mahogany inlay banding done today, well pleased.

Looks like my green wood troubles for the steam bending might be over. Amazingly found a guy coppicing timber in Manchester today. Looks like the bars may be from wood felled right next to city's ground :daumenhoch:

Ah happy memories of an urban childhood. Dirty mags in the bushes, a game of kerby and jamming the phone box coin return hopper to collect a bit of pop money :smitten:
-
Well its been a while, far too long in fact but i finally got back to doing a bit today. Thought it was time to do a test fitting for the tenoned socket fittings for each tube.
Because i had to cut the original tube out and file them flush with the lugs, (they were braised in), it meant i couldnt just insert the ash dowels stright into each lug socket. Each dowel end with have to have a custom tenon cut to match each lug socket :'(
Happy with how its going so far :daumenhoch:
[attachment=1]
-
What's gonna keep it in there ???
-
Its pretty tight bud but will be smearing the lug sockets with an industrial strength epoxy :daumenhoch:
