Whatto race fans :)
Found this recently and the flaired braised ??? joints were enough for me to stray from the righteous path of freestyle for a once only forray into the world of race bikes :D
Being a race newb im hoping for a bit of guidance and parts suggestions from you learned racers
Any info on the frame would be appreciated too :daumenhoch:

Ideas welcome gents :daumenhoch:
-
very nice clint, glad you have seen the light and joined the race boys :LolLolLolLol:
-
He'll be back........
-
Interesting frame and as you say super smooth braised welds , beautifully put together the vitus frames I've a alloy one and its superbly made never seen one of these and as you've probably found clint there's very little info on vitus box frames as really they are known for normal frames I like it a lot
-
Unusually nice and you're right it did come with some choice bits as well. :daumenhoch:
-
Gorgeous frame, gorgeous :smitten:
-
Welcome to the slick side of Rad Clint.
Nice looking frame you have there.
But first things first.... Ditch that freestyle attachment up front :knuppel2: or if you're on a budget, chop the spindle and whack it on the back.
What's the plan? Date correctness? Era correctness? Reigon correctness? Any ol' tat as long as it flows?
:daumenhoch:
-
Freestyle attachment ???
Thinking along the lines of a tidy survivor build with possibly araya aeros and 3 piece cranks?
-
Freestyle attachment ???
That'll be be the front brake ;)
Thinking along the lines of a tidy survivor build with possibly araya aeros and 3 piece cranks?
That'll be the latter of the choices. And my personal favourite.
Any colourway in mind?
I have some survivor Araya Aero rims in the stash if it helps :daumenhoch:
-
I did wonder if you meant the front brake :LolLolLolLol:
Prefer the idea of an evolved survivor rather than a strict period correct one.
If you rode for a number of years bitd chances are your bike would have evolved and had parts changed around as they came out or as you swapped with mates... I quite like that idea of reading a history in a bike :)

Couldn't agree more. I don't go in for that date correctness bullshit ::)
but having said that, I don't build bikes that were ever sold as a complete.
-
Want to pm me a price for your aeros? :)
-
Them welds look silky smooth.
I like it... I like it a lot. :smitten:
-
Araya aeros great choice of rimmage :daumenhoch:
If you want to have a bit of gallic flair you could have:-
Maillard Helicomatic Hubs
Sedis chain
Michelin tires
Weimann MXs
-
with all that weight saved already you could afford to run tuffs on it :daumenhoch:
-
Nice few bits and bobs. Let the project begin. :)
-
Doesn't seem to be a serial anywhere ???
looked in the usual spots but no joy, any ideas guys?
-
+1 on the love for this frame! :smitten: Good luck with the build - am looking forward to seeing how it turns out!
-
Some wolber tyres on for sale thread clint a lot of vitus completes came with that brand of tyre on
-
My guess is it's a bespoke frame, bars and seat post are circa 84 and brake is circa 85.
Have you tried these guys for info Clint

Cheers gents, will take a look :daumenhoch:
-
Nice set of french boots for the Vitus on the way :)
-
Nice 👍 the tread on these is a bit different as well so will match the unique nature of the bike
-
My thoughts too, cheers cocker :daumenhoch:
-
Those tyres are perfick :daumenhoch:
-
Wheels and tyres sorted, May go with the Gt bars as they were with it and in similar nick.
Thoughts on a seat? Current thinking is a Brooks vitesse... :-\

So it turns out the Vitus name is now owned by chain reaction cycles :'(
No one to ask about this bikes history :yahoo_silent:
-
Having no luck finding any info on this frame :(
Stuck seatpost should keep me busy while a few lines of enquiry await a response :LolLolLolLol:
-
Clint , forgot all about that Vitus patch you asked me about in another thread .
I do have a spare one , it's got a few marks on it but it will clean up .
PM me your address and i'll send it to you ;)

With todays addition and the seatpost removed with a spot of fettling she shouldnt be far off being ready to build :)

Just need to resto the cranks and lightnings, find some grips and bb set.
-
A nice Bmx this VITUS. I do not know this VITUS series with this style of welds. More often than those that can be seen are those whose technique was following the aircraft with nested and glued tubes!
-
More English goodness for the entente cordiale :)

Wish i had those forks :smitten:

After the fun of getting the GT post out with a custom tool i had to build
http://www.radbmx.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,179922.0.html
..... i thought the build would just be a case of waiting for the right parts and a good clean up with the peek polish.
With the woody Marlboro build delayed whilst i sorce new materials i thought i would spend the afternoon with a handfull of rags getting the frame presentable.........
I had left the GT post just sat in the top of the seat mast so it wouldn't get lost and it reminded me that it would probably be wise to give the inside of the seat mast a good scrub to remove any debris.
Imagine my horror then when i felt the wire bottle brush hit something!!!
I quick look with a torch revealed what looked like mud
(http://i1182.photobucket.com/albums/x455/oldschoolace/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_1396_zpsyt376ywz.jpg) (http://s1182.photobucket.com/user/oldschoolace/media/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_1396_zpsyt376ywz.jpg.html)
No problem i thought, i will just knock it out with a steel rod. The rod yealded no soil but what looked to be old wood dust!
I broke out the 7/8th drill bit and found the going more difficult then expected. A second tip out of the debirs revealed more brown dust and a tell tail white dust with the smaell of old gloss paint tins you find in the back of the shed :D

My fears were soon confirmed with larger pieces of what were obviously Glass fibre >:(
(http://i1182.photobucket.com/albums/x455/oldschoolace/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_1408_zpst8l6oqzv.jpg) (http://s1182.photobucket.com/user/oldschoolace/media/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_1408_zpst8l6oqzv.jpg.html)

An hour later and victory over the seat mast was finally mine :slayer:
(http://i1182.photobucket.com/albums/x455/oldschoolace/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_1413_zpsk0htbwhk.jpg) (http://s1182.photobucket.com/user/oldschoolace/media/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_1413_zpsk0htbwhk.jpg.html)
No wonder i struggled to get the GT post out, not only was it rusted in but also wedged in the remnants of a glassfibre post :LolLolLolLol:
-
Looking for blue Preston petty or OGK hex type grips for this build if you have any gents :)
-
All cobblers to me :-*
-
Don't like it here :yahoo_silent:
-
Its ok, he'll stick a rotor on it.....
-
:LolLolLolLol:
-
Great work on the seat tube! :daumenhoch: Love this build - looking forward to the next instalment!
-
A chance stumbling across some Terry cable style lever hoods has taken this build off on a very slight tangent. Going to try and balance a blue theme with a bit of black :daumenhoch:
-
Spent more time than was sensible trying to find a french looking doorway around the back streets of Manchester yesterday. :LolLolLolLol:

I missed it at MK but have just spotted it over on the Museum - great to see it finally up and running and a bloody good job you did with it too! :daumenhoch:
What's the story behind that brake lever boot/cover?
-
Cheers bud :daumenhoch:
I had my mind set on blue grips and weinmann levers but I couldn't find a blue grip with the right early look. I started looking at Preston petty hex grips as a solution but could only find red or yellow. In searching I stumbled on an old motorbike site that had the hex grips in black and the lever boot popped up as a possible add on in their suggestions banner. I found some Neil ones later but they looked a touch small on the large weinmanns.
-
Nice job on your build
Your "Vitus" frame is more likely a frame made of Vitus tubing sold under a different brand as in the road bikes world.
I used to ride a Sunn in 1984 with that kind of sticker but not those smoothed welds.
-
Really like this , looks real old school .. Great work Clint :daumenhoch:
