Title: Is 4 cross better than 3 cross?
Post by: Gnarlyscoots on July 11, 2014, 12:03 AM
Looking to lace a pair of Bullseye hubs to Speedline rims. Using the calculator, I can use 188mm spokes to lace 3 cross or, use 194mm to lace 4 cross.

Apart from having more metal in the wheel, is there ant benefits to actually lacing 4 cross over 3  ???

4X is 'stiffer' so makes a stronger wheel than a 3X one Terry, but adds a load of rotational weight (if you're bothered about that). Popular in the 90's for the tank bmx, now the weight weenies are about it's back to 3X.

And my spokes go all the way up to 5  :D

I build 4x as I am on the very wrong side of 10 stone  :LolLolLolLol:

194s are easier to get hold of too. JT has some for sale at the mo :daumenhoch:

I think 3 x looks neater and if you build it nice and tight it will be plenty strong enough. Works for me anyway. I built my front wheel 2 x, it looks well funky and is still straight.
