Ok gave my mate £300 for this Laserlight looks like the only things missing is the Redline 400's :'( Rear MX1000 and the XC11 pedals. I have the pedals and rear brake so thats a result but think the 400's are going to have to wait. BONUS got the OG manual for the bike :)
So i reckon a nice lil survivor build coming on :daumenhoch:

Well the chrome was not as bad as first thought :daumenhoch:
-
Man, that's a bargain  :daumenhoch:
Looks like a KZ-4 but could be that it came with a Takagi 175 OPC as stock.
:)
-
bang tidy :4_17_5:
-
Proper result :daumenhoch:
Build it with a one piece crank setup it came with a one piece option in other countries.
Ian :)

top score! :daumenhoch:

Sweet score :daumenhoch:
One of the ways to tell if its a later KZ-4 is if it has Kuwahara stamped on the rear brake bridge - does it?

Yes its a KZ4 i thought id seen some with opc's but i thought the 400's were stock, looks like a bit more swatting up and if it did come with a Takagi 175 i think i have one :D

So what type of power disc and chainring did they use?
-
sweet as f f ff foook :coolsmiley:
-
So what type of power disc and chainring did they use?
In 84' Kuwahara brought out a Laserlite with lower end parts, to make it more affordable. That model was called the Survivor.
I think yours is a Laserlite but has had some parts changed. As it would have had Black Ukai Speedlines, not Araya's 7X like yours has and a Sugino stem, not a Suntour.
Anyway the see pic below
The powerdisc and chainring were Sugino.
i'm pretty sure the opc cranks were Sugino too and not Takagi

-
I've heard a few stories that some bike shops would just swap out the cranks and use parts they had to replace them.
Hard to pin down exactly what's what and how reliable the stories are tbh. A while back I found a KZ-3 with a Takagi set-up.
The seat clamp wasn't right but the rest of it looked right:

LaserLite
KZ-83 (KZ-3)
KZ-84 (KZ-4)
The Kuwahara Laser Lite was the ultimate BMX ever made by Kuwahara. It had the best technology, used the highest quality materials, had the best components and was the most expensive Kuwahara BMX ever made. All the factory Kuwahara riders used and raced the Laser Lite. It was Kuwahara's flagship model.
There were two models of the LaserLite. The first model, the KZ-3 or KZ-83 had aero or oval tubing (top and down tubes) including the forks while the later model known as the KZ-4 or KZ-84 had slightly less oval tubing that was practically round (the top tube was very slightly oval in shape while the lower down tube was completely round).
The KZ-83 models with the Oval tubing did not have any of the "K" mark or "Kuwahara" stamped into them while the later model KZ-84 frames had the"K" mark from Kuwahara stamped into the front fork ends, rear drop outs and Kuwahara was stamped into the rear brake bracket as well as under the frame on the bottom bracket area plus "Product of Japan" was stamped there along with the serial number. These were Kuwahara's original high end bikes with their lightweight and special hollow frame which was a big seller for Kuwahara and showed to others all over the world the quality of the now famous LaserLite.
Components
Frame & Fork: Full Cro-Moly
KZ-83 full oval tubing, KZ-84 semi oval tubing
Bars: Kuwahara full size chrome Laserbars
Stem: SunTour
Wheels: Ukai or Araya 7X Chrome
Hubs: SunTour precision sealed-bearing

Pedals: SunTour XC-II Bear trap pedals
Seat: Taihei Elina Nylon seat
Seat post: Kuwahara Cro-Moly lay-back Laserpost
