Starting more bikes before finishing others but I like to share my builds on here as I think the builds are the heart of RAD - certainly my favourite part.
So Kuwahara have to be my favourite BMX manufacturer, to me they're real old school, the KZ1's in particular tick all the right boxes for me - fast, super light, clean lines and very early 80s when BMX ruled my everyday.
Recently i've been building bikes with beautifully restored or NOS parts, fresh paint (I don't do powder) but as nice as they are I want to build a couple of clean survivors that remind me of the bikes i owned after they were new. So this morning I began building 2 KZ1, i'll do a thread for each and maybe do a vote at the end for your favourite. I'm definitely finishing these before any others :)
Comments as always very welcome :daumenhoch:
Heres some early photos of a black and gold build

very nice chris , the cranks look good on there as well , i love the fineness of the tubing on the kz1's , its going to be a cool bike what colours the other

The other one is chrome and blue :smitten: Starting that thread next...
For me they have to be VX cranks on a KZ1, thats how they came out of the factory BITD. A one piece was KZ2 spec.
-

1982
-
Very nice in black.
-
Lovely Chris, looking forward to see this one progress. Will it be just like the black and gold in the original 1980/81 magazine ad?

Day 2
Made some good progress on this today, added Suntour headlock, power stem and Redline V bars
(http://i1174.photobucket.com/albums/r604/J44NCG/Black%20KZ1/BlackKZ1113132_zps252bd0b7.jpg)
Lovely used Suntour pedals, I could use gold KKT Lightnings (need to buy them) but I might stick to a Suntour group set so to speak...
Yellow Elina Lightning bolt seat, gold Nagaoka seat post and gold Suntour seat post clamp
(http://i1174.photobucket.com/albums/r604/J44NCG/Black%20KZ1/BlackKZ1113135_zpsb9bae956.jpg)
Found some NOS in bag Suntour chain ring bolts so swapped them over
(http://i1174.photobucket.com/albums/r604/J44NCG/Black%20KZ1/BlackKZ1113136_zpsbcbf205b.jpg)
Possibly the jewel in the crown for me - some beautiful gold UKAI speedlines wrapped with yellow IRC 80X tyres :smitten:
and heres a wide of how she's looking so far - more tomorrow... And yes Rich I need to tilt the seat back a tad ;)

Colours are to factory spec, wheel nuts came with the wheels and i remember having red ones on a KZ1 - i'm building a bike that reminds me of what I liked in the early 80's, i'm not using your 2013 rule book ;)
-
My eyes have been blessed 8)
-
Looking fandabidozi that. 8) Out of interest what size are your redline approved v-bars Chris? Am I on a hiding to nothing looking for these stickered ones in the 25" proline size (It seems the Win v-bars are more "common" to find in the 25" width)
-
That looks really nice Chris. :coolsmiley:

Cheers
Fitting the wheels and crank to the chrome one today :coolsmiley:
You're going to struggle finding 25" Redlines especially affordable ones :)
Mine are 23"

Both of those builds are great :)

A very slim one but you're in danger of them becoming your "nemesis" part ;D
Sadly its a case of the hourly search and refresh of for sale boards...

That was meant to say "the 2013 rule book" but when i read it back i thought i'd leave it as you'd read it soon enough - you hippy!! ;D

Cheers Gav, its like its owner :LolLolLolLol:

Very nice indeed :4_17_5: , I too would switch out those wheel nuts ;) .
Have you already got a cool race plate planned for it to finish it off ? ( Hot plate , Haro colour plate , Saber plate ? ) .

Yep, got everything I need for this build, 1st gen "Osaka Japan" OG pad set and a hot plate. I need a plate, ideally a hot plate for the chrome and blue build.

;D I did think "this comment is almost identical to the other one" ;D I'd still like a Hot plate for the chrome build though... ::)

How's this one coming along Chris?
I'm nearly there with my KZ-2 rider parts, not going to be as strictly correct as your two but will hopefully be general early 80s era correct and Japanese products.
Might start an Old School Race thread myself this weekend. Polished up the bottom bracket and cups a bit yesterday, will start on the frame Sunday in the sun (fingers crossed) :coolsmiley:
-
I think this one is there Keith, if the sun is out tomorrow i'll take some pictures as i'll be with the bikes.
I have to say that this is my favourite of the 2 factory builds - its a little rougher around the edges and has probably taken 3 years from first to last part, but its been a background build if you like...
I can't wait to see yours (eww er) - have you got all the parts you need now then?
-
I can't wait to see yours (eww er) - have you got all the parts you need now then?
I've got everything apart from a brake lever and Kusuki/Win Slant stem (but hopefully Ian/bodamus might have one earmarked for me at some point in the future).
I'm going to say that a couple of the parts are not EXACTLY the original vision I was going for but I wanted to get it built and ride it. I might change a couple of bits in the future if the right part comes along at the right price. :daumenhoch:
I'll post some pics soon and get some opinions. It's certainly not going to be a Frankenstein's monster. All fits with the era and brand I think.

I think the donkey that I mentioned in the other thread might be carrying a spare Win Slant Stem - i'll let you know :daumenhoch:
Which lever are you after?

Jaan,
I have just embarked on a K-Welded Serial Number (No Tange, No Cry) KZ-1/2 build (still to decide) and I am abso-fooking-lutely blown away by this build! :angrysoapbox:
Lush.... Simply stunning. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:
Just one observation..... the Decals don't look right for the model? Sorry if I err, but I am confused:
The only reason I am being so picky is that I have just scored the Decals pictured in the Ad for my build, and your lovely is wearing a different set! :uglystupid2:
Oh, how my OCD messes with my BMX pleasure / bank balance! :idiot2:
Still fooking BOTM right there! :4_17_5:
*ps* The DBSS is ready to be built and you will LOVE it! ;)
-
Hey Rich,
The decals are OG ;) the 1980 KZ1s used up those that were designed for the KE1, then mid 1980 Kuwahara changed their logo for printed materials (ads etc) by placing the Hinomaru above the K and slowly it filtered through to their decals in 81.
I was inspired by the ad that you've pasted in, I wasn't attempting to replicate it - there are other differences in addition to the decals. If you're after building a replica you certainly have the right decals, you'll also want to use a MS-1000 Mini Stem and KKT Lightnings, thats if you're building to KZ-1 spec. What year is yours?
Regarding your K-welded frame set, I might be biased but IMO the K welds are superior :daumenhoch:
Can't wait to see the DB SS :coolsmiley:
-
Great job and some nice well thought out touches. (http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/ll167/glynn9371/emoticons/LOVIN.gif)
-
Excellent job :daumenhoch:
-
Love it and so nice to see someone that puts their Suntour chainring bolts the right way round :daumenhoch:
-
Thanks, I can see the temptation to instal the bolts the other way around, it's is somewhat counterintuitive to fit the "nicer" side out of sight.
-
I have fitted mine Hex side out as it looks a lot better, I'm not fussed either way :daumenhoch: ;D
