Title: JMC DY/AP
Post by: hunterdubber on December 30, 2012, 09:49 PM
It wasn't until I saw one of these  framesets in the flesh  that I realised their class and would one day have to have one

From looking in mags when I was a kid and then getting  into O/S I completed most of the grail bikes I set out to do and more .

But because I wasn't racer back then, the Darrell Young wasn't at the top of my to do list ,

however a good few old mates ,who were racers held these at the very top of the must have bikes  :4_17_5:

Since seeing them up close and studying their detail , I realised how fantastic they really are .

Influences from Hutch , GT, T/A, Quad, Bottema  :smitten:

The oversized downtube  :coolsmiley: the straight through top tube (with JMC sheild stamping)  :coolsmiley: :coolsmiley:

Cranked widening seat stays down to great sweeping looptail with big dropouts  :smitten:

and to top it all this set up came with an AWESOME upgrade a  pair of  rarer Andy Patterson Forks

Tear drop tubing  :smitten: straight through Bottema-esque with a bologna slash cut like LG;s

This frameset takes the best bits off other beautiful framesets and brings them altogether  :4_17_5:

This is the first incarnation of this build and I will ventually re post a revised build later in the year

Darryl Young and Andy Patterson actually rode with a 1st gen DK pro XL stem and I have one on it's way from the States

Not sure whether to fit this with a set of NOS MKS GrafightX  I have to go with the Graphite Tuffs

Not sure whether to go Candy red frame and re chrome the AP forks or chrome frame  :-\

Black 2nd gen frame pads too  :)

but here it is current spec  :)

1985 JMC Darryl Young frame
1985 JMC Andy patterson forks
JMC Darryl Young bars
NOS Bubble font A'me round grips
Original Hutch Deep H stem ( to be replaced with 2nd gen stamped square edged DK Pro XL stem)
Original JMC 2nd gen padset
1984 Skyway Graphite 3rd gen Tuff wheels
1984 NOS Michelin/IRC  Competition 1.75 tyres
NOS Bullseye 2 piece cranks and spider with NOS Sugino 44T
Original Brown bearing Hutch beartrap pedals
NOS Shotgun 1 seat How often do you see these
Dia compe MX 900 with  DC MX123 lever and 1985 stamped DC cable
Gold and black ESH Izumi track chain
Tange 320 headset

Christian that is one sweet build.

Those forks are just sex, the most awesome forks ever, nicer than Bottema even. Just fabulous.  The Frame and large JMC DY bars are brilliant. Good to see some different tyres as well.

If you were going to change it I was to vote for Candy Red and Chrome forks and would like to see what it looks like on spokes too.

Fookin Lovely.

Beautiful Christian, simply stunning

Stinks of class.....

Have you thought about running a browning two speed? Only reason I ask is that I see a few being built with the browning lately.....

You've gotta love JMC,  that looks great but spokes would improve it IMHO.   :daumenhoch:

Yeah Darryl Young used to run a Browning set up  :coolsmiley:

Seen here two speed chainring and rear shifter  :smitten:

I have actually had the pleasure of riding  a Browning  on a Maximum Pro belonging to Andy Bigplinky , it was dialled and rode amazing  :4_17_5:

Originally I was going to go more DY  style at first  with the spokes , but because of the AP twist went for graphite Tuffs , I here you MattSky but I think it looks good a little different than the crowd this time round .

Who knows , by the time I've re done it I may change for Sherrif record C's on 7L's ( the hubs were produced 1985 to 1991 which means they'd just about go on this build  era correct )

If I get that set up it'll be the best of both worlds  :daumenhoch:

Thanks for the kind words Radlads  :-*

I had most of the bits before I even thought I was getting the frameset

but I saw  another with the same cranks and in Candy red  and rolling on Graphs :smitten:

That sealed it for me

Thanks for the comments  :4_17_5:

No worries Davey man  :daumenhoch: , again everything on the bike is race orientated ( hence the graphs , Skyway race team spec )

The Bullseyes are on instead of flights or profiles ,I love em and not seen on every other build

,but  actually Darryl Young himself rode a one piece Takagi on alot of early pics   :) ,  JJ Baldbmxer built his  lovely DY op with a one piece  8)

Is that a standard colour ? it looks fantastic  :)

Thanks Ash
It's a cool colour and the finish is amazing , but it's not standard and that;s why I have no issues about changing it to Candy Red to keep it standard  :4_17_5:

Sometimes it can be good to have a slightly custom twist  or a deviation from the norm , but expect a little criticism

I dare n't do owt custom or daring  :crazy2:  :-[  :LolLolLolLol:   but admire those who do ,  do it well  ,,and pull it off  :-*  :D

They produced the Darryl Young in Chrome ,Candy red or white only

They made the Andy patterson in Chrome or white only

Steve 69 mentioned  re doing it in Candy Blue  :)

Mattskybeat did a Candy blue one it was lovely but not standard  :smitten:

may look a little brighter because of the US sunshine but doesn't look clear see through , but is Candy apple .

Christian, that, my friend is Fookin STUNNING, I love it.

It looks great with Graphites but would look equally cool with spokes. I'm going for 7Xs laced to Sheriff Stars on my AP when I get some AP bars.
I too think that Candy Red frame with chrome forks and bars would be the finest combination too. I always look forward to your builds, they are always thoroughly well researched, top quality and the end result is jaw dropping every time. This , however has to be my favourite. I love the black Bullseye cranks on it too, they stand out superbly and as has already been said, a nice different touch with the tyres. I'd keep the Hutch pedals on it as in my opinion, the plastic peds would cheapen the overall look which cannot happen on a bike of this calibre.

Once again Christian, AWESOME WORK Christian.  :daumenhoch:

Adam

PS: I have a JMC AP frameset in flawless chrome but for what I have in mind I am going to strip the chrome and re powder it white. If it would help you out and your forks are stucturley sound I am more than happy to do a straight trade on the forks and I'll get yours powdered instead. :daumenhoch:

I love these in red, jj's blew me away. I saw the frame when he'd just got it back at fearnville. The next time I saw it built at mk and the bike made stop for some time, just to soak it in.

You've already done your homework mate.
If you build it in a guise of how one of these was raced then you have to have got it right.
When I see a build I always like to know stuff like, "why has he done that" or  "why did he choose that part"
When you get these sort of things presented it gives you a bit more appreciation/ enjoyment of what your taking in.
What ever you do with it I know you'll do justice because you don't know any different.
I can't wait. :daumenhoch:

I can't remember the exact number but there were 6 or 7 factory candy blue DY's made. Jim Melton still has all the info in his little black book. And I also heard that Darrell had one of these as a practice (?) bike. When a collector bought this bike in the early 2000's he assumed it had been repainted a non-standard factory so painted it red, only to later hear from Jim that blue was it's original colour. Oh dear! An OG finish blue DY is the rarest production variant.

JMC's rule. They look just so right.

Love it Chris.
Always was and still is one of my favourite bikes. It looks great as it is, but a spoke option would be nice. Originality aside, candy apple frame and anodised blue rims always look good, or vice versa.

Might be worth contacting Jim to see what the OG finish was, then get it repainted in the OG colour ???
