Right, thought id have a go at home anodising, im really pleased with the resutls considering its my first attempt, but i made a stupid error :LolLolLolLol: ill let the pics talk:
levers as bought, then stripped,

then the set up equipment,

sulphuric acid and distilled water, lead cathode and ally wire to make the lever the anode,
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/bb199/adenough/P1020064.jpg)
left in the solution fizzing away for about 3 fags ( 30 mins), then remove and put into a tub of distilled water (from the condeser tumble dryer thing)
heated up some dylon mix in the nuke, let cool to about 50 degrees C,
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/bb199/adenough/P1020097.jpg)
then placed the lever into the dye for about 20 mins (this is when i realised what id done wrong)
now you have to seal the dye into the alloy by immersing the part into boiling distilled water for about 30 mins,
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/bb199/adenough/P1020102.jpg)
and hey presto, a loverly anodised tech 3, well nearly!! im personally amazed at the result!! but as you can see, i didnt connect the body of the lever properly.
your thoughts please........................

Looks great for a first effort and haven't seen anyone else try it before :daumenhoch: Set up looks complicated though. What sort of price are we talking for the gear used? ;)
-
Cant beat a bit of home brew :daumenhoch:
Looks good for a first effort and i'm sure it would get better with practice. :4_17_5:

not much, more time than anything :daumenhoch:, power supply, connectors (which i had to needle file to fit) croc clips, tubs etc, probs around £25, then youve gotta get caustic sosa, acid, lead, etc, cant really put a price on it as i scrounged some of the bits :daumenhoch:
-
excellent effort :daumenhoch: if you had polished the lever first the results would have been even better :daumenhoch:

-
cool propper DIY resto work looks good for your first try. look forward to seeing your next diy job :daumenhoch:
-
Not a bad finish at all and if you enjoy that sort of thing then all the better. :daumenhoch: Personally I'd rather take my bits to the anodisers and let them do what they know best. I got a mini Pro Neck stem striped and re annoed blue and a set of 7x rims annoed red then shinesided all for only £50.
-
nice1..why do you use dye? is that all anno is? great 1st effort :daumenhoch:

yep, thats all it is!!

its ok paying people to do things for you but you cant beat restoring something yourself :daumenhoch:.
all you end up doing otherwise is bolting new parts on a frame and i cant really see the fun in that as you can build a bike in 30 mins if you take your time ;D.
good effort rog :)

+1 Some hobby this would be if everyone just waved their cheque-book every time something needed doing. This section would be very quiet for a start. :uglystupid2:
Looking forward to the next installment when you anodise a polished component. :daumenhoch:
-
Fair play for trying something different, let us know how you get on. :)
-
will do deffo,I've got another tech 3 and my seat clamp plus my stem top :daumenhoch:
-
Brilliant work ;) came out real good 8) As I understand it the more u polish it before , the better shiny finish u get :daumenhoch:
-
Brilliant stuff mate. Looking forward to seeing the next batch :daumenhoch:

Great stuff Roger,it will be interesting to see a polished component done-i reckon it will be spot on.It will also be interesting to see how different colours work.I reckon you could have a queue of people wanting this done!Keep the post updated as you do more! :daumenhoch:

Brilliant Rog. Got a couple of pots of Madonna Blue dylon I can send you along with some stripped & polished parts to try....... ::)

Awesome work Fog :4_17_5:
Always loved Chemistry at school too :smitten:
So obviously you'd need a bigger container and more acid to do a set of rims ,
,, but what about the power supply would that still be capable of supplying sufficient current to still be successful ? ???
How much ampage is specified :)
look forward to seeing further experiments :coolsmiley:
-
Yeah I reckon its between 12-20 volts with a current of up to 8 amps, I've got a nice link I'll post tomoz,im using my phone to type this and its a pain in the aris :LolLolLolLol:

A good source of power is an old radio ham CB set :police:

If any of you have got kids that go to secondary school, get them to swipe a power supply from Physics or Chemistry (they may be able to get hold of some sulphuric acid to) :LolLolLolLol: :LolLolLolLol: Then expect a knock at the door from a member of M.ilitary I.ntellegence 6 :police: :police:

That's cool :daumenhoch:

Brilliant thread. It is good to see someone trying something for themselves :4_17_5:

Nice try. :daumenhoch:

Crazy Craig has a DK stem, Pro neck Chainring and Hutch pedal cages that need anodising. I'm sure you wouldn't mind sorting them out for him. :10_2_12:
Sorry, couldn't resist. >:D

Tried again this morning, with a slightly different set up, double the lead & let it cook for 2 hours! out with the needle files, and all i need to do is a bit of polishing of the new anno!!
