Been a while since this thread has been up and with plenty of newer Radsters on here I thought it would be interesting to see what "Grail" bikes folk want. :coolsmiley:
I'll kick off with the daddy of them all the 78 STR-1 Prototype. Only 1 known today and owned by Mr H 8)
-
Blue Raleigh mag shock for me at the moment :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

-
Would love a VDC Freestyler never had one :'(
-
Ripper or Kuwie Laserlite with mint chrome for me. :smitten:
-
it was always a T/A for me.
had about 6 of em now :D
-
Black chrome GT
-
a team riders bike... and probably not to fussed whos ...as long as they were a well known rider ........ for example Andy ruffles raleigh , tim marches mrd , mike miranders hutch... Stu thompsons redline etc etc etc .
-
Skyway TA :smitten:
-
it was always a T/A for me.

There it is again!

1997 21" toptube Rigid street frame designed by Nate Wessel :)
-
Is that your grail Ash?? I got mine already bro. Just got to get it OA'd then build and ride it :daumenhoch:
It sure is, but it's one that I'll never end up owning for 2 reasons. A the ££ involved in buying it and B the owner will never sell it. So on a more realistic level it would have to be either a Round tube or Floval top tube JU-6 :daumenhoch:
-
It always was a Quadangle from early 80tie's , then a 1984 chrome performer...
now a Skyway TA .... :smitten:
-
Pro Class
My last race bike from BITD
-
Black chrome GT
Of the Pro Nora variety ! :smitten:
Or does it go without saying ! ???
-
Round tube or Floval top tube JU-6 :daumenhoch:
NICE!! I got my '84 Kuwahara Exhibitionist and my '80 Torker L.P :smitten:
Anything else is just a bonus to ride on :daumenhoch:
-
managed to get mine a year or so ago...my Trident.
-
Got mine, I searched for 5 years for an R&R CR-1 and waited 30 years for a Cook Bros.
-
The rich kid in my street had one, and I was so jealous, therefore it became my grail
(http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h50/the_robster/P1050172.jpg)
-
Kuwahara Exhibitionist
-
Is Robbo the rich kid in your street then J?
-
Has to be a Judge for me or a Torker 280 :smitten:
-
Got mine. Knight RetroGoose, one of only 10 blah blah blah.
And Rob Pickle had you all convinced they were as rare as hen's teeth......
BITD I lusted after many things but the only BMX I wanted wad a Pro Class. Had 2 of them and still love them.
-
No grails for me but there only two bikes I'd really like to do maybe in the future , opposite ends of the spectrum
A 1981/82 Ammaco sport and a JMC DY or AP
I'm with the Myth on a big appreciation for VDC Freestylers , pure exotica , Neil Clarks or Juan Mattos' freestylers in my all time ever faves list :smitten:
and Glen's is cool :coolsmiley:
and Dan Harris' ::)
:LolLolLolLol:
-
Wouldn't your Grail bike/frame be dependent on what bikes you were aware of when you were a kid growing up around bmx bitd? There are some bikes I have seen on here that I never new existed now! never mind bitd? Do you think it was also where you lived? How well off you were? ??? etc etc? I grew up around Raleigh burners and like bikes? The 'rich kids' as we called them and there were only half a dozen had bikes like PK Ripper,Quadangle,Skyway TA and the odd GT,Robinson and Curtis.......Based on this My grail was always going to be one of those? :daumenhoch:
I'd be interested to see if anybody else shares my views? or similar? ;)
-
I'd just like my old DP back that got nicked in the early 90s.
-
I was obsessed with Tuffs and the bike I really wanted was the super tuff burner (no comments) All my stuff has tuffs now :D
-
Got mine. Knight RetroGoose, one of only 10 blah blah blah.
And Rob Pickle had you all convinced they were as rare as hen's teeth......
Since when has Rob had a Knight Goose ?.....any pics of it kicking around ? :D
-

Ash, I'll ask him bud. I don't think he likes to show it off much though.... If he hasn't got any, I'll take a picture of mine and you can imagine it in red >:D :2funny:

Couldn't agree more bro. The Torker I have is a rep of the last bike I had back in '85/6 and the Exhibitionist is what I have always wanted. The rich boy on our estate had one and he couldn't do fook all with it and would NEVER let anybody have a go. After 28 years though, I have one :coolsmiley:

I see what your saying about your Grail being something you had or saw as a kid mine was a Kuwahara Laserlite I knew someone who had one when we were kids and to me that bike was the business.
I built a Laserlite about 8 years ago and still have it now but since seeing a VDC Freestyler I have always fancied having one and now thats my Grail now.

JMC Harry Leary.

as a kid the 3 bikes i always wanted were .... Toby's Raleigh SBDU Team set up - it's mad to think this frame was made 2 miles up the road from me in Ilkeston.
Failing that my mate N13L VV picked this up last week  one of a handful left in existance. So fooking jealous it's unreal :LolLolLolLol: Raleigh Special Development :4_17_5:

It's poxy Flickr mate, i don't know how to use it but Photofooker hasn't allowed me to upload for a week now >:(

the only bike i really really wanted when i was a kid was the Vincent freeystyler i was lucky enough to get !!! i deffo wasn't the rich kid on the street but worked hard to get it doing 2 paper rounds & working on a stall in the market....
would like another Vincent to keep it company though..... :daumenhoch:

Mine were the 5 classics that were pipe dreams & way out of my reach as a kid-
Ripper, Quad, TA, Master, & Performer.
All easy to find, the hardest thing was to find was a black & yellow Piranha like my 1st bike BITD
Never heard of VDC & such exotica when I were a kid, let alone ever saw one at Langsett Cycles, so they hold very little appeal to me.
-
Anyone's grail an '84 FST?? ???
Talk to me. :yahoo_silent: :daumenhoch:

OS Race > DG Racer / Nomura 24-26
OS Freestyle > Vector FS Unlimited
NS Retro > Kappa PK-24 or Kappa VDC

This is the conversation me and lee(scary Leary) had. Half the stuff you see for mega money was nowhere to be seen bitd and holds no nostalgic value what so ever.
A JMC, a Leary turbo, a ripper, a TA and quad etc. These were the high end bikes that were few and far between, while we all had gt, diamondback, mongoose, Raleigh, kuwahara etc.
Some odd stuff in the magazines, but I lusted after the best bikes I saw in the flesh.

Mine, but I'm out of the game for now :(

Like Toby's Team bike, you'll have fun finding all the parts for that Tom :daumenhoch:
The parts would be easy compared to the frame Ash - in fact I'd wager you have 90% of the build parts in your vault :LolLolLolLol: The frame broke bitd :'( it was one of two made when Toby Henderson & Jeff Bottema visited the Raleigh factory over here bitd. They were the very first two Special bike development BMX that Raleigh ever made.
Henderson's broke and Bottema's was stored by him until he auctioned it off a few years ago.. this is what it looks like today :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

And there it is. This thread needs no more input as JT has it nailed.
You can keep your VDC and even Haro exotica as the humble Mongoose / Diamond Back / GT and even Burners (the top end Tange made ones!) were all we ever had. I saw a Torker in the flesh once and a Curtis, an MRD and a PK Ripper in my LBS and thought i'd died and gone to BMX heaven, and then I saw a ProClass. Twice the price of my Californian and completely out of my range but I will always remember how much I wanted it. So that was my o/s grail.....
Luckily girls took over and I nearly forgot about BMX after that!
-
same as last time,
Prototype Terrible One Titanium Barcode, the only one in the world, custom made for Taj Michelich himself,

As mentioned a few times, there are so many bikes that come up that i never knew existed BiTD.
But ones i saw in magazines and at the weekend at RoM set enough grails for me.
Luckily i have built all the ones i lusted after. the only build i havent done is a replica of my mongoose Californian i had bitd.
Who knows i might do it one day.
-

There you go, get cracking, thats the best one.

I found my original Ammaco F&F a few years back :smitten:
Had it for years :smitten: jumped milk crates on it, bunny hopped house bricks, raced my first two seasons of regional’s on it, gave my mates backies on it :daumenhoch:
And that was my ultimate grail.
The only way I knew it was mine is because the number stamped on the frame was in my cycling proficiency pass book :daumenhoch:
And I will always be grateful to Spen :4_17_5:
I've had it re-chromed as I felt the old girl deserved it and I'm slowly (its been 3-4 or even 5 years now) getting all the parts together, as I will only buy them when they come up cheap (ish) :daumenhoch:
I'm still looking for a set of NOS Red MX1000's and a set of NOS MKS Graphite’s for less than £100 :2funny: :2funny:
Like I say I'm in no rush :daumenhoch:
-
That Raleigh is soooooooo lush :smitten:
Would love a Birmingham Wheels pro frame ::) Been looking 4 years with no luck >:( seen every other size and missed or failed on a couple :'( u never know 1 day tho :coolsmiley:

I live and always have lived in the same old small town in the North .
BMX must have been real big here comparatively , going from what alot of comments I;ve read
We had plenty of areas on spareland dug out for ramps and makeshift pipes.
The local leisure centre held an indoor racing and Chorley track was only 15 mins away
Every man and his dog had a BMX and people I rode with had
1 MK1 Pro burner ,MK2 Supergoose ,2 DB HLT , 3 P.K Rippers , 1 Skyway T/A , 1 Pro Class , 1 E.T Kuwahara ,1 Kuwahara laserlite ,1 Black chrome GT, 1 Redline PL20, 1 Torker Torkflyte, 1 Torker Pro X , 2 Prolite CCampbell, FST , 1 Haro Freestyler gen 1 , 1 VDC Changa ,ALL lived in my town ,but I don't recall anyone owning a JMC or a Quad
Besides the countless Falcon Pro Beta, zeta, Theta , sigma
I thought every town was the same or lots lots more ???
, but having said that alot got a BMX for christmas and left the hobby after about 12 to 18 months :-\
-
My 1st BMX was a 2nd hand Ripper (2 serial #) and always loved the SE adverts and reviews and from then on SE was the brand for me.
More pics of your grail frames/bikes would be cool 8)
So all my grail frames are frames that I never saw in the flesh but know of from way back, I'm lucky enough to have to of the 3 frames.
STR-1 Prototype now owned by Jeff.

There only one ""grail"" for me now. The Haro anniversary frame. I want to sell my Hoffman big daddy to partly finance the purchase of components that will build a carpet queen and then also build another one to ride.
Or should I say three? the 3rd to hang on the wall.
Or four? the fourth as an investment........
Dammit!!! you could keep going with this. At least I have listed my ideas in correct priority order.
:)
-
I found my original Ammaco F&F a few years back
And I will always be grateful to Spen :4_17_5:
It was Simon who found it you cuddly fool...... I just brokered the deal.....
And you are one lucky boy indeed. I would love to find my Mongoose Cali with my old postcode stamped on it. Bought about half a dozen on th off-chance over the last few years but no such luck......
-
More pics of your grail frames/bikes would be cool 8)
My Torker. Built exactly as I had it in 1985 except the re-issue tyres (as I ride it) and I have swapped out the '87 Torker bars for something a little older. I need blue ODI mushroom's too :(
(http://i1084.photobucket.com/albums/j406/Londonhellboy/47.jpg)

Got to be a Gen 1 complete Bob Haro Replica so like many others we've got Dom to be thankful for the fact our dreams might become reality again with that anniversary frameset! 8)
Bob's the reason I got into this whole BMX thang in the first place :smitten:
As a kid anything was a dream compared to my shitty GS Burner...the coolest thing I had was a blue Haro Flo Panel- that was the Mutts nutts :daumenhoch:
Back then where I lived a tricked out Ultra Burner was amazing and the really cool kids were lucky enough to have DP Freestylers...I think the coolest thing I ever got to see in the flesh was a white/blue PK Ripper ?
I do remember seeing a beautiful white/black Ripper hung up in Afflecks Palace in Manchester in the early 90s-still a favourite to add to the wish list of grail bikes for me.
Currently making a Neil Ruffell tribute 'beat....another of my dreams as a kid....when the neon green and orange bikes came out it blew me away...
I'd love to have an Eddie Fiola Pro Performer ...I loved them all but the coolest was that candy apple metallic red frame with chrome forks and black tuffs...awesome
I guess my real 'Grail' bike would be to own a real ex-pro's survivor bike...if there are even any still out there ?
Has any of you Radsters got one.....an ex-Andy Ruffell etc.etc would be off the scale to own for example ?
-
A chrome skyway TA as a kid.
Today though I would love to get my hands on a national pro 24".

As a kid i always wanted a Baby blue loopy ripper or a 84 Haro sport , I now have two rippers and two sports :D 8)
Since getting back into this hobby it would have to be a RTT Ripper or a Redline squareback , having said that i love the Cycle pro foiler that you got Ash :coolsmiley:
The one i will never part with is my original first BMX from bitd, MT Racing Silverfox , im so glad my parents never chucked it out :).
-
Mine was a gen 1 freestyler (which i now own) but as i have got more into the old school seen the 70's bmx is more appealing to me now, so the frame i would most like to get my hand on would have to be a STR 1. :daumenhoch:
-
Got mine. Knight RetroGoose, one of only 10 blah blah blah.
And Rob Pickle had you all convinced they were as rare as hen's teeth......
Ooops
Looks like there might be three of these in the UK in a week or two then.... well, I've got a Park one already, so I needed a track one to pair it up with didn't I ::) ???
I completely blame that fookin' Ashley. Watch this space kids >:D

Top work Spen :daumenhoch:

the holiest of all my grails was and always will be the hutch pro star,i used to drool over them in the mags bitd,my second and more affordable is the skyway t.a,every kid around my way wanted one,ive had three of them now :smitten:

Of the Looptail yes, but I could be wrong. Are you refering to the Looptail or the later limited run which between 8/10 were manufactured?#
I know Eddy used to have one of these.

ACE Racing Pro, if anyone has one lmk!

Always wanted a TA extra long, but now my Grail would have to be the actual CURTIS Pro i had from 85 to 89. Tried to track it down with no joy :'( Loved that thing :smitten: Or even the Diamond Back Viper i had before that.

Has to be Craig Campbells two-tone white and green streatbeat for me....
