Title: FINALLY built an old dirtbike -FINISHED-
Post by: SaMAlex on May 01, 2011, 08:59 PM
Ive got 3 bikes i want to build but i just dont seem to get round to it. They are a mk1 dirtbike, a mk2 dirtbike and a Menstural cycles. I think Ive got all the bits, just no time. Today I finally got a moment to build the mk2 dirtbike. I always knew it was going to be a classic 90s throw together and Im pretty happy how it came out. The stem is blue so  had a rummage and found some other blue bits to go on. I wanted to put some tiny Powerlight bars on it but they are just TOO small so I swapped them for slams.

Bits i found in my shed that went on the bike:
Blue redneck
Blue MK1000
Blue translucent longnecks
Blue hinged DC seatclamp
Taj front tire
GT rear tire
Small shield print seat
Super pro rear wheel (Twist laced)
GT stamped Profile cranks
Silver Shimano DX pedals
Custom made Solid chainring

I just gotta bend fook out of the tech77, and put on a chain and cable.

Do you have something to swap? I think DC did a lever just like a 77 with much more of a bend. I always used to bend 77s to make them feel better but the bars on this are so cut down it'd need bending quite a bit.

I already snapped another lever that I put on it first. An 883 I think. Oops!

The very nice Tech 77 DJ :) Or to be a bit more mid-school the Tech 99 - Hinged MS version (still had to bend 'em if you'd cut your bars right down and had to mount 'em under the crossbar - the Dirty Harry's based on them although don't know if they're hinged the same).

Yes, and its taken me this long to do anything with it!  :-[
I've had the blue redneck stem for a while and wasnt sure what to put it on. Its nice that it matches the frame stickers.

Totally. I was rummaging for pedals and wasnt having any luck. Gold DXs ... 1/2" DXs ... Ah, a sliver pair of 9/16 and the cages are backwards! I think they must be from when I first started running left hand drive and used to swap my pedal cages round cos the cranks were on backwards

Yes, Powerlite stamped. They must be about 18" wide or something silly. Ive wanted to put them on a build cos they were so popular in the 90s but they are just a joke. Way to thin.

Well, maybe not quite 18, but there is no room for grip and levers. Bearly room for just grips really.

Ah, i found a photo of the powerlite bars. Looks like about 22" wide  :crazy2:

The grips in this pic are VERY cut down!

I did a bit of swapping round on this. I found a pre bent 77 lever so that almost works with the tiny bars. I also wanted to use the chainring on something else so Ive put a different one on. I had a blue PPP power disc that'd go well with, and what better on a bike like this than a sprocket pocket. Just gotta get a cable and chain now.

All done and finished. Chain, cable, top tube pad. DONE. I also had to change the rear tire cos I needed the GT one for something else. Its now a very used but original Comp 3 on there. Not sure what type, it doesnt seem to have a "label".

The brake pulls OK and sort of works. Who'd have thought!

YES! I love it. The Slams look perfect. I actually used the Powerlight bars for yonks - right up until my Dirt Bros Patriot bike - but then got back on n S&M frame and had slams again. Love that build - reminds of many I bike I used to ride!

Great, NOW you come in with somewhere to get them!  :LolLolLolLol:

I had a bent lever on another bike which didnt really need it so it all worked out anyway

I got a bit more done to this bike.

I swapped over the profile cranks for a One Piece Crank, and put some 1/2" GT pedals I had. O.P.C seemed much better on this bike, and they actually hold the chainring tigher (cos it bolts to the crank in the middle) so were better when using a grind disk.

Ive got a different front wheel i want to use but i need to get the spindle free'ed up. Then it'll be all done.

I LOVE this bike, it looks so much like an early 90's bike, it just goes so well, I think my next bike will be an old s&m now. Also, if you wanna get rid of a sprocket pocket let me know! :daumenhoch:

One of the cool things about this bike is its an early mk 2, brakeless dirtbike, but its the same as my second S&M. Same colour (well, mine was lighter but still purple) same decal set, same frame. Just what i was after. I always ran (run) a dialed setup with 2 working brakes and stiff wheels but I used to ride with loads of people who had bikes similar to this. Loads of fun.

Im very tempted to take it down the local Ledge-etarian skatepark and have a few sproket pocket grinds but they wear down pretty fast  :-[

You should take it down the skatepark :) out of interest how much would a sprocket pocket cost? :daumenhoch:

Very hard to say, I dont think they come up often. I have the one on this bike, a black one still in the packet, and a used white one

Some say I keep way to much junk  :crazy2:

The 4 spoke sprocket pocket is one i made out of a chopping board. If you look close you can see the flight ring that's drilled to take it
