Hi,
I've seen a TA with a K ... serial number without a date stamp
Is this one of the first ones ? or a fake ? :police:
-
i think its one of them rewelded jobbies mate
-
What do you mean by rewelded jobies ?
-
I though most of the one's welded recently had '86 as the date code? I'm not sure though.
Bob_Acid knows about the K numbered TA's and if I remember rightly, it's thought that these are original.
Is the frame chrome or white? If it's chrome, it's almost definately not one of the ones welded recently.
-
All TA's are stamped with USA and the date they were made....... apart from the K# ones. I've got a copy of an early test article from BMXA that states the first production TA's were made in Japan because the teardrop tubing wasn't available in America at the time. These i surmise are the K numbered ones. The only difference is the placing of the flex holes at the drop-outs.

see you learn something everyday on the great radbmx.
looks like its a early one then
-
so they were'nt true temper tubing that was used on them then bob ?.
-
I've tried to make the article big enough to read but it's not happening. It says they turned to japan and found two companys capable of producing them. The Ishiwata Seisakusho Co won it??? remember them :uglystupid2:.
it does state though that they were then shipped to America to be heat treated.

Thx to Mr Coasterbrake for the article
-
I have an interest in these frames because i own one. I bought it in 91-2.
A few years ago i asked the yanks what the deal was and nobody had any answers. Bart at Skyway was telling me it was a fake till i showed him the photos. Skyway seem to have no idea the k numbered frames exist from what i can make out.
Although i no longer have my 84 US made one to take photographic comparisons with it is identical in every way apart from the curved brake bridge and the flex holes which are not right on the drop-outs as with the US one but about 10 or 15 mill up the shafts. In fact i'd go as far as to say the k one was better quality at the welds but it is chrome and my US 84 was white and i think any decent manufacturer used the better ones for chrome and painted the others. Another differance was the black seat tube sticker that has no mention of tru-temper.
About 6 months after i first asked the question it came up again and Mr coasterbrake on vbmx produced the article. I've since come across 5-6 of them on ebay and such.

whats the story with the rear brake bridge bob.
why are some straight and others curved.
mine has the curved one.
just wondering.
-
Bit of a mystery. They seem to have changed to the straight bridge to cut on costs at some time then changed back because they were crap. I'm not sure if the 86 frames had the straight bridge though?
Anyone that has a TA can they give us the date and what bridge it has and we could probably get some answers.
The geeza at work that sold Jay his Torker Master tells me he has USA TA 00003, i'll ask him to bring it in and see.
-
Hi
i tried to read that article but couldnt, can you just list the text here ?
-

Mines got a straight bridge, serial number 0010982 date 4 - 84.
-
My original TA's got a curved bridge . . . serial # 8-83 0004350
My other one's got a straight bridge . . . serial # 4-84 0009817
Cheers
Steve :daumenhoch:
-
The one that fruities got is a straight brake bridge one :daumenhoch:
-
what about yours Bill? year and bridge?
Anyone have an 85 or 86? or one of the 03 ones?
-
Skyway T/A f/f No. 0003134 , curved bridge, think it`s an 83 but I can`t check as it`s not here.
-
I reckon that'll be an '83 TA then Bill . . . I can see an age pattern here with the brake bridge difference :daumenhoch:
-
mine is 84 , straight brake bridge
-
84 straight
into bowls, riding my electric scooter, watching coranation st
seeking Female for dinner and dates possibly more ?
age 21- 90
Rich :)
-
loves kids, dogs, golden showers, bnwt, walks in the country, messy divorces, have you got what it takes to be the yin to my yang?
-
i will check mine later
i have 2x 83 ones
1 x xl will check serials later
-
So, it looks like
83 TA = Curved brake bridge
84 TA = Straight brake bridge
Is the K numbers 82 then ?
-
i did'nt think they came out till 83.i could be wrong though.
-
Could do with a read of that article that was scanned on here, but i cant read the one on this posting
-
The thing that confuses me is i saw an 85 with the curved bridge :-\
-
The thing that confuses me is i saw an 85 with the curved bridge
Hmmmmm . . . the mystery continues then :-\
-
I reckon its just a case of what was to hand , i mean if they had no straights then the odd box of curved ones might have been used and vica verca
like the stickers maybe, no exact science
Rich :)
-
i think it's more like they had so much trouble with the crush they changed back, the straight bridge was the cheaper option but they crush. though we don't seem to have many 85/6 to prove the point :-\
-
my 2 ta's (83) both have curved brake
and my xl (84) has straight
-
Here is a better scan of the TA document
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/f194/adeshere/TA_life.jpg)
-
well done Ade ;)
-
So, from this can we say that all TA's were started off in Japan, then finished off in the States.
-
No not all, just the first run till tru-temper took over as tube manufacturer. Which is where, i think, the k serial models fit in.
-
I understand now :LolLolLolLol:
From this subject we got the following
K 001638
??-83 0003134
08-83 0004350
11-83 0007014
Would be interesting to see what other serial numbers are out there
-
ok, i've posted asking for numbers on OS-BMX.com and VBMX lets see what we find out from the rest of the world?
-
forgot to put my serials on
5/83 frame no 923
?/83 frame 6870
XL 84 frame 12000
-
ok, i've posted asking for numbers on OS-BMX.com and VBMX lets see what we find out from the rest of the world?
Great idea . . . will be interesting to see the outcome :daumenhoch:
-
tefore
5/83 frame no 923
?/83 frame 6870
XL 84 frame 12000
Are you sure the 5/83 isn't 0001923 instead of 0000923
the 6870, is probably 10/83 and the 12000 XL is prob 05-84
-
good thread this one. when i got my TA and saw it had K serial number i thought it was a copy or something. i asked skyway aswell what it meant and bart said the experts at vbmx might know :LolLolLolLol: :wtf:
anyway here's mine K 002406 with curved brake bridge.

Hi All,
I have just got a TA off Ebay last week.
I was a bit suspicious as although the SKYWAY USA 3-83 stamp seemed genuine enough, there were only 7 and not 8 digits in the serial number, and the last three, 0000801-, seemed slightly larger than the first four zeros (A RESTAMP ?? :wtf:)
It does have a curved brake bridge.
Should it have 8 digits in the serial number ?
I am trying to get a decent pic to post, but any thoughts from you guys would either put my mind at rest or make me go and check that it isn't a Burner ;D
Cheers for anything you can come up with,
Rich :daumenhoch:

Hi You Lot,
If mine says 03-83 0000801 does that mean I have got an early USA made frame?
Seeing pics of others :-\ it seems genuine enough. My numbers have been stamped with "Good 'Ol 80's Star Wars" technology by comparison :2funny:. The chrome and decals appear to be original too. ;D Forks are ASCO:tickedoff:Are these any good as a brand??
Can I be on the list too please ;D
Thanks
Rich :daumenhoch:
