Title: Pushed in ! need a clever idea to help !
Post by: BENDYCAT ELEVENTEEN on February 02, 2011, 07:20 PM
Right got a pair of red alloy hubbed skyways

trouble is some muppet has at some point has over tightened the rear hub, pushing it in and fooking it up

now none of the rivit are damaged just the hub each side

so now what i would like to know from you lot is, has any one got one back in shape and been sucsessfull in it working ?

do you think that if i lay it on a flat suface and gently hit it in the right place to bring it back to the right place and shape ?

or does any one have any other ideas that they can come up with that might work ?

cheers B  ;)

get thinking  :knuppel2:

no mate sorry - but I usually check most threads anyway (I can either learn something or they might go off topic with hilarious consequences)

I've had this problem before BE ,, and tbh it's a fookin nightmare and fiddly

I ended up trying to warm up the hub and gently tapping from the opposite side , only thing is you struggle to keep the face even as you attempt to knock back each alloy hub prong.
someone devised a tool , where it is a long bolt  was fed through where the axle goes and you slid on a wide tab then attached with a nut from the inside of both hub flanges . Then slid a collar surrounding the outer of the flange, then slid another metal plate wider than the collar on top, and then a nut to tighten and therefore pull the hub face upwards and out evenly and slowlly as not to cause any damage

Anyway why do you want to use a clever ?  ???

  :D  :LolLolLolLol:

Send a PM to Spen's brother Simon "Hootski70" he's fixed this problem a few times and will talk you through it  :daumenhoch:

Don't expect an immediate PM back though he's not the fastest at replying  :LolLolLolLol:

I had this prob bitd, not from over tightening by a muppet, but from the cones binding and winding themselves up, quite common.

I put a new, coaster hub in mine. There is a way of drawing them back into shape, but I don't know it, but I have seen a thread with it on.

I'd be tempted to drive over it, seems the most sensible thing to do!! :2funny:

Try this one................

Start praying to the God of your choice................and hope for divine intervention!!!  :D

Failing that................get some piccys up.

Seeing the problem might inspire the masses!!  :daumenhoch:

I am surprised that no one hasn't invented a tool to sort this out yet after all these years  ???

i might drive over it, but can you lot send me some of your skyways to have a go first in case i f ' it up on mine  ;)

cheers for those who helped and cheers to those that didn't  :LolLolLolLol:

Right then.

Mark at RetrospectBMX (cbrgill) has a tool that can do this with limited success. My brother Simon (Hootski70 on here) and I looked at using crank and pulley pullers with limited success too.

In the end the really bad ones we had to cut the rivets, turn the hubs inside out and re-bolt them temporarily and pass a big threaded bar through and wind them straight then turn them back round. Not what you want to do, but if they're really bad it's the only way ;-(

Pm me and I'll get Mark's number to you.

Get a small G clamp ... put it against the face of the wheel using something to stop any scratches on the nylon, feed the other end through the wheel and put a long thin socket or something similar that wont bend through the wheel and on to the back of each "arm" section of your metal hub, put the other end against the G cllamp ,it will be at a slight angle so go slowly and do a bit at a time on each hub section until they are all level, turn over and repeat, you can also use another G clamp to span the rivets so as not to push them out , again do 1 section at a time ...   The G clamps that have a turn type arm are better than the newer trigger type as you can wind back and forth and you have more control ,rather than just tighter and tighter until you push the release mechanism ,

They look like you ran over them with yr car,  :2funny:

Well it must be yr lucky day, looking through all my junk in the garage, I found the tool I made. Can't beleive I still had it, thought it was long gone. If you still want it, pay me something for the postage and I will send it on to you. You can keep it then, I don't think I will need it again. I know where it is if I do.  :D

Good old RAD hey  :)  :Great_Britain:

It would be nice to keep track of this tool just like Steve (ANIMAL)'s pro-class / 7x straightening tool so that other members can use it  :daumenhoch:

Ok, im sending this tool to Bendycat, its something I knocked up out of nothing but I found it worked a treat when I needed it. As Bobafett mentioned, it might be a good idea to keep track of this tool, as others may want to use it. I will explain how to use it on here instead of PM'ing people as others can then refer to it. I think it was quite simple, lol (it was 5 years ago)

Remove axle and bearings, place large rubber bush and steel smaller cup over the hub to be straightened. Insert threaded bar with one washer (Non-welded end) through the steel cup and bush and through the damaged hub. Now (this bit is fiddly from memory) You have to place the other washer and nut onto the threaded bar inside the hubbed area, it can be done. Once screwed on, take up slack with top (external) nut by hand. Then hold top (welded) nut with spanner or socket and place spanner on the nut you just tightened by hand. Now tighten this nut, it will be hard work but remember you are pulling the hub out at this stage. Sadly you have to just do a bit at a time and keep slackening the whole assembly to check progress. Thats about it, if you pull it out too much, whack the hub back in bit by bit with a lump hammer and a block of wood on the hub to avoid damage.

Hope this helps you all, (everyone will be buying knackered old mags now)  :LolLolLolLol:
