Title: The Goose gets Cooked !
Post by: BENDYCAT ELEVENTEEN on January 11, 2011, 12:36 AM
82' standard team mongoose is what it was - well that was the answer to a question of "what bike frame is this ?" asked by a member on Raleighburner.com

the photo's show a bike frame that had seen better days and a mish-mash of parts - CW style bars with a couple of dents in the cross bars - tange copy fork that bent the wrong way - odd wheels and press metal calipers

Well i pm'd him and asked if he wanted to sell the frame ! - cut a long time and story short is was a swap for some mags with a bit of cash and some brake cables and decals throw in for free - so a meet up was done  in the middle of a freezing day at tesco's car park - looked so dodgy handing over bmx parts

I did ask if he could not touch/clean the frame in any way, so I could do it in my own way

so i got it home and had a look over it and it was covered in grease ans even had a feather on it ? must be a goose then ! - surface rust and pitting all over the frame - a couple of marks on one side of the gusset - and a couple of scrapes on the frame

Before i got it

Now after 10 hours of polishing over 3 days in different stages to get it up - it now looks like this

Now there are still marks and some small pitting in places, i think that adds a touch of class to a frame that is 29 years old and still can turn out like this   - now i just gotta find some forks to go with it

cheers B

Cracking bit of resto mate , blinging results  8)

Did you use Lemon juice and tinfoil  ???
Title: Re: The Goose gets Cooked !
Post by: Dannywhac on January 11, 2011, 10:53 AM
That came out lovely  :daumenhoch: Looked to me like a goose had been sat on the top tube, using the headset cup as an ashtray...

Coke and tinfoil? Or Oxy/Vinegar/Citric bath? Either way it's come up a treat :)

awesome job, nice to see you managed to salvage it with a bit of spit and polish.ive got/had two of those geese both rechromed and im must admit that the results were both a bit disappointing, mostly because of the high content of tricky areas on the gusset geese which the pre chrome polish cant get into.looking at yours it looks as good as my rechromed geese :daumenhoch:

Hey Bendy , are you going to spill the beans on this and tell us what you used  ???

I can't see it being just autosol as that can be quite abrasive and would surely of resulted in some yellowing to the frame  :-\

Coke/tinfoil ? Lemon juice/tinfoil ?

It's a cracking job mate  8)

Regarding the forks .... you should have been at MK09 , Jai was selling a box of Tange pinched forks (ideal for this) at a £10 a pop  ::)
Title: Re: The Goose gets Cooked !
Post by: BENDYCAT ELEVENTEEN on January 13, 2011, 09:45 AM
£10 a pop - bugger  :'(

autosol = is too harsh and scratchy - will take off more chrome than you want and leave hair line scratches that will dull the chrome
coke and tin foil =  the coke eats the rust - the tin foil takes it away but again is not a great choice of stuff to use - the tin foil will start to scratch the chrome when it gets more crumpled , it also collects rust in the foil and bigger bits can scratch chrome to dull it
lemon does the same as coke = brakes down the rust = it can help but be careful that the rust spot /pit does get too much lemon/coke under the chrome or it might start toi pull it up and get under more chrome

cheers B  ;)

I'd use a three stage polishing kit designed for automotive use (check out Frosts (http://www.frost.co.uk) ) but the key is how you use what you have, take your time.

Tange pinched would look OK but they are not the right forks for this frame. You need the later mid 1981 - mid 1983 forks that look similar to cali forks but are a bit rounder on the bend where the fork arms meet the steerer tube  ;)

    post pic please John

This is them..........

(They look very similer to cali forks but they are different - if you turned them upside down they look a bit more "U" shaped to the cali's more "V" shape  ;) )
