Title: Hutch Trickstar restoration *Complete*
Post by: jordi555 on September 04, 2010, 01:19 PM
Thought I'd start a thread for my Trickstar
Here's some history first

I picked up the frame in the early 80's (can't remember exactly when)
I was lead to believe it was one of the very first frame and forksets in the UK
It came from Shiner in Bristol, throughout the guy who sponsored me and a few others for racing.
I ran it for a number of years alongside my racebike (black Hutch 'pro star')
Then when I packed it all in, the race bike was sold on a d the trickstar ended up in a box!
I ended up lending it to a pal, for his son to learn on, he built it up, had it powder coated and kept it for approx 12 years
I got the bike back just before Xmas
Only in the last few weeks have I had chance to ride it
Since my son has just turned 7. I thought it was about time I got him a bike
A new Haro F1C
We've been out riding together and I managed to snap a Tuff
This has made my decision to crack on with a restoration
The seatpost was jammed in, I had to have it surgically removed.
The frame, forks and bars are at the beadblaster at the moment, then off tithe chromers.
New stickers on their way, new Tuffs ready
Pics soon, hard work to do on my phone

Right, rather than scanning the pics, I took photos of them.....

They arent very good quality, so apologies :-[

Back in the day I got quite handy with an aerosol  :idiot2:

There are only a couple of shots when it was originally chrome

I went through a baby blue period, a blue period and a orangy red fade to white :idiot2: :idiot2:

Oh and inbetween, sort of a scratched chrome faze :idiot2:

Then we have the latest when I got it back built up, It was powder coated green :knuppel2:

The seat post had to removed with heat, and the rear stay footrest have been remade and welded back on....I said its had a hard life.

There is no way this is ever going to be a concours restore, I want to ride it when its done, I just want it back to somewhere near it was back in the day 8)

The specification when complete will be as follows

Hutch Trickstar F+F.....no pegs on forks...its one of the very first

Black Tuffs

ACS stem
I think the bars are Vector....correct me if I'm wrong....I'd love to know, they have a hoop by the stem, + they are huge, I like them a lot :smitten:

Elina Flight tech seat in white

Dia Compe brakes

Hutch Doughnut

Tagaki 180mm crank

Pro neck Chain ring

Shimano DX, with new end caps

Ame grips

Laid back seatpost

Thats all for now..............oh and dont mention the curly hair.......its gone now :(

Sorry Im a bit dim, whats the best thing to do?

Its says my account is available for everyone to see?

Does FlickR give you an image tag format link?  It should look something this...

Having had a quick look at the Flickr site, you should be able to create a slideshow and paste the link to the that :)

hiya jordi nice pics (rad) that hutch has seen some incarnations and its still here to tell the tale well worth doing up, the bars are vector ultimate freestyle bars deffo , i have a set which i have tried on every bmx and they looked too big then whacked them on a haro and they look sweet might be worth seeing if you can get the right forks for the frame they turn up occasionally and good luck with the rebuild  :daumenhoch:

Thanks for identifying the bars....... Regarding the forks it’s a USA frame with matching early Hutch freestyle forks, same as the later Hutch Judge forks
Same as this beauty below

Update.

Collected the frame forks and bars from the beadblaster earlier today, and dropped them off at the electro platers

First pic shows rear dropout with serial number.....means nothing to means, I hope someone can shed some light on what it means??

Second pic shows parts at the chromers, cant wait, should get them back in a couple of weeks

Update....

Remember this is going to be ridden :crazy2:

Picked up some nice spoked wheels off ebay, sun rims with suzue sealed hubs, lovely condition.
Ive ended up with some new school tyres....some FAF skinwalls, I really like them, went for 1.95
Cleaned up my tech 3 levers and found some nice Ame tri grips
Had my ACS stem powder coated black along with the disc
Bolts for the stem are at the chromers.
I hadnt realised how worn my DX's were, but Ive cleaned them up a bit, greased them and stuck some new end caps on
Cleaned up the headset and BB, but decided I'd go for new, waiting for the postie on those....along with some new brake blocks

Hopefully this week I may get the frame, forks and bars back from the chromers...I can't fricken wait.
No sign of the Hutch stickers yet....I'm getting a little worried theyve got lost in the post..

Whilst rummaging around in the loft I dug up two old number plates, the Hutch one is my old racing number from back in the day..........

I'm still on the look out for a Kashimax aero, as I'm not happy with how the Elina seat has cleaned up...its still too yellowy  :(

One more thing, my nos acs rotor turned up today.......

I'm getting giddy now......cant wait to get back out on it.....a shelf queen? definately not ;D

Yeh, it is a bit thick I agree, it'll do for now, I could always strip them again and have em sprayed?

Just picked up a Kashimax Aero of the bay 10mins ago, used, but it looks like it'll clean up ok :coolsmiley: + some new stickers

Postie has brought my headset, BB and brake blocks too  :daumenhoch:

Waiting for a call from the chromers to tell me when I can pick up my frame, forks and bars

I could have this up and running soon...... :)

Does anyone have any suggestions as the best way to apply my new decals to the frame and forks?

Someone I asked the other day mentioned spraying a mist of water to allow them to slide into the desired position, this should eventually evaporate.

I ask this as the Trick Star down tube sticker is pretty big, and more importantly it was expensive and took ages to arrive, I'd hate to muck it up.

cheers

Here is a guide from AJK bikes which shows you how to use soapy water to slide the decals into place.

http://ajkbikes.com/downloads/techtips/AJK%20Bikes%20Sticker%20Installation%20Instructions.pdf

Must admit I just do it the old fashioned soap-less way.  I usually put a couple of temporary markers at both ends of the frame decal to indicate the centre of it (electricians tape cut into a triangle/arrow shape) - then work out where the centre of the down tube is (by placing decal on the frame without removing the backing) and put a couple of temporary markers on the frame so both line up.  Then carefuly apply.  Sounds like a faff but always worked for me as I was scared of using water and c0cking the job up...

I go for running the sticker through soapy water about 5% fairy will do it. They will slide around nicely until you squeeze the water out with a soft lint free cloth. I have had perfect stickers first time every time. And you won't get a dry spot like you can when you damp the frame.

I subscribe to the view that 'when these came out the factory the stickers were stuck on by someone who had a production line of the fookers and a couple of minutes to do each frame"

peel off backing - place on frame - smooth on from middle to sides to avoid bubble - done.

You did say this is a rider after all  :daumenhoch:

Jordi,
Thats one smooooooth rider you got there mate  :daumenhoch: :smitten:
I'd agree with the seatpost though mate, needs changing  ::)
Were the chromers reasonable, I need a few bits done shortly.

Great Resto though mate, qualty
Jamroll, Cheers bud  :)

The chroming cost me £240 + vat, that was for the frame, forks, bars, doughnut and bolts for the stem.

New seatposts on their way  ;)
Straight and layback......I'll decide which later once I've tried them both

Nice job dude, looks way better with the straight post....  :daumenhoch:

I'd get a new school bike for the skatepark and retire the trickstar, just use it for cruising about on

New schoolers are way better to ride, and the brakes work...  ;)

I went down the new school route a few years back, I really struggled
with it so I got rid. Maybe today's bikes are different?
The Hutch feels so nice to ride I'm sticking with it. (I can always restore it again)
I don't ride much, so can't really justify even  more spending..

On the other hand....
If I was to buy a new bike, what would you recommend for around £500
Bearing in mind I'm  40 yrs old..... going on 20!  (not that that should make a difference)
I'd need 2 brakes though. for all those old school moves.

For around £500 i'd buy a complete, rad shop have a good selection...

http://www.radbmxshop.co.uk/shop/catalog/browse'shop_param=shop_overview_pager%3D1%26cid%3D39%26

Loads to choose from, i'd recommend sunday, wethepeople, fit... you cant go far wrong with £500 to spend

You'll be hard pushed to find summat with a front brake, lugged forks are available though, Stodgy might have some lugged uk forks left....
