Thought i would start putting together a resto progress thread.
Since getting back into bmx as a grown up kid i fancied building a mongoose cali. I just thought they looked like a really cool bike. So i started keeping an eye out on the bay and ended up winning this without knowing much about it at all.

It's actually still the only chrome pro i have seen. When i realised that it came either chrome or part chrome/paint too, it got me thinking.
The frame is october 87 so would have been built/sold early 88. So looking in the museum at around this time these in particular caught my eye.

I loved the black and chrome of the decade pro and ended up getting the pro class donut off this when the owner broke and sold it. I wanted to do my californian pro in the decade pro colour scheme .
I got hold of some sorry looking forks.

My little mogoose bits stash was starting to grow. Since this photo i have managed to get a used black viscount aero. I am aiming for parts that are correct or older for the f/f.

With some help from Cipher (with decal and pad photo's) I sent my info off for the pads making. This is what i got back, i have to say the photo's don't really do them justice as they look so much better in the flesh.

Next i had a bit of a parts breakthrough. A buddy was selling a cali and i managed to trade a few parts with him. Here we have a few chrome bling pics of some bits when i got them back.

I have got the f/f and bars back. I recently got hold of some silver acs hubs and my pro - class rims are going off for hard anodizing. I will be using a polished 44t takagi chainring on a black pro- class power disc which is also off for anno. So wheels and chaingring anno and i am just about to send off for my decals doing. Then it should be there.
Here is how it looks so far.

Hope you like how it's going. The brakes i will be using are 901 callipers and tech 6 levers. The levers will be chrome on the black handlebars. I have a choice with the callipers though as i have chrome and black. Which do you think would go better? The chrome on the chrome front and back of the f/f or black on the chrome?

Taking shape mate :daumenhoch:

what about half chrome half black for the calipers ???
-
A bump from the dead here. :)
Finally got the bike finished a year and a half later. I ended up wanting to stick a little more to how the bike looked parts wise than originally planned.
Here is how it turned out.
I took some pics yesterday then turned the bike over to my oldest daughter in the afternoon. My youngest has a mini supertuff burner i bult a while ago. So that's them both sorted for an old bmx now. Just the wife to go and we are all osbmx happy. :daumenhoch:
The bike is very close to being full spec for the 87/88 Californian pro.
One or two parts that are not spec have been substituted for parts that look the same/similar so as to keep an original feel to how the bike looked as far as the parts rundown is concerned.
The original grey finish has been changed for black and the decals/pads have been tailored to my personal choice requirements.

Lovely build. :daumenhoch:
-
Thanks for the nice comments guys.
I nearly lost the love for this half way through, i am glad i stuck with it now though.
I had sourced the wrong forks due to lack of knowledge on my part, (i had some earlier cali forks re chromed up for this) and i didn't think the right one's would turn up.
I did end up getting the right one's and the earlier cali forks i had by mistake i ended up doing a straight swap for the Gen 1 goose forks i needed for my team rampar. So it all turned out nice in the end :)
-
That looks bloody brill
