You may look at this wheel and think.. "Ah yes... its an Araya 7X".

Well you would be right, but this aint just any old Araya 7X, this 'actual' wheel was removed from one ANDY RUFFELL's bikes at a race meeting in the 80's.

I've been given this piece of Team Raleigh memorabilia by Darren Wood, whose Dad (as you will all know) was Team Manager of the Raleigh BMX Team.

The rim itself is sporting a few 'wounds' and has a nice flat spot (which is why it was removed).

But its the hub that interest me.. Campagnolo Record...

I'm gonna mount this up and display it with my bike collection.

thats cool dave, i loved campag hubs and headsets back in the early 90's ,had them on most of my road bikes and mtb's , sadly the japs came in and took it over , think they did this a few times in history lol

A bit more history for ya Dave, This wheel was more than likely built for Andy by Tony Fannon of Grimsteads cycles in East Ham London, where both Kev (Kai) Riviere and my self worked. Andy used to get his wheels built there. Kev can prob tell ya more.

i would most definately know. both andy & craigs wheels were laced & built by myself & those hubs were polished to an almost chrome finish then lacquered

I've still got Stu Thompsons wheels from his 81 race bike here with Campag record hubs too. Lovely piece of kit those hubs!!

Bloody hell I stripped down an Araya 7X rear built up with a Campagnolo hub around 3 months ago

Wonder if it belonged to any famous Pro rider, Must've belonged to someone who took their racing seriously with the choice of hubs

Still got the hub if anyones interested or needs to make a pair up

This wheel would have been built buy a fella called GARETH JONES he owned a small bike shop in WINSOR called JONES THE BIKE

He built my wheels when i rode for PROLITE and he also built all the DIAMOND BACK riders wheels

this Would have been 1985
so my DAD was the MANAGER of raleigh and he also got the wheels built for the team there during the 85 and 86 Seasons

He was gonna take it to his local 'landfill' site but apparently he was turned away... too many GT's been dumped so they are struggling for space.

theres something very special about owning something from a pro. Bike, bike part, clothing etc, I'm lucky enough to have some very cool vintage SE stuff from some of the pro's back then.

what was so goos about the campy hubs, they weren't even sealed were they?

on a related note, ruffs crashed at a race at my local track and snapped the peak of his moto 4, i grabbed it an d peeled the 'bell' sticker off and have it stuck to a cassette box somewhere.

the big deal about campagnolo hubs is decades of experience designing hubs that spin like a dream and r&d done real time in the real world! this obviously came in handy for bmx racing ! wow, not sealed ! must be shit then!
