Darren Wood - Skyway Collection.
« on: October 10, 2009, 07:26 PM »
My 'good friend'  ;) Darren Wood has asked me to post these pics for him.

He recently sent me a stash of Raleigh goodies and in amongst them were some pictures of his collection of race shirts and a couple of his bikes...

So here they are... proper job!!!

This will also be put in the Museum  :4_17_5:

Skyway kit is right up there with the 80s SE Racing kit as one of the best, most classic of all time.

Dave thanks for posting the pics     :daumenhoch:

Little story about this bike  :)

This bike i got in the winter of 1983 .................. Thats when i got picked to ride for FACTORY SKYWAY i raced this bike for half the 1984 season and then got another frame and forks (SKYWAY ) of coarse  :4_17_5: and this became my FREESTYLE frame and forks .
The following season i changed sponsors the same as my team mate and friend CRAIG CAMPBELL we both got the chance to ride and design frame and forks for prolite......... Blah Blah  :) long stories and getting off the point.............! 8)

As for the SKYWAY it got lost to the back of the garage with lots of other bikes from other sponsors..

Jump foward a few years and i am now riding for SE RACING..... .................... And i have no use for the TA my next door neighbours young lad was in need of a new bike  ;) so i come to the rescue and build him a bike ................. Step forward the said frame and forks  :daumenhoch: and some parts i had kicking around!.....

FRAME AND FORK ..................... SKYWAY TA
BARS                    ..................... JMC DARRYL YOUNG
WHEELS               ..................... UKAI SPEED LINES IN BLUE
STEM                    ..................... TUFF NECK IN BLUE
CRANK                  ..................... OPC
PEDALS                ..................... SHIMANO DX"S
BRAKES                ..................... DIA COMP MX 1000 IN BLUE

ECT ECT  :) :) :)

Anyway jump forward twenty or so years and i bump into the old neighbour and have a chat and he tells me he still has the bike  :D
Next day i am on the phone and on my way to pick up the bike ............ When i arrive the bike has all the same parts !

But ther is one new feature a lot of RUST you would have thought the FORKS were sprayed a yellow and brown color :'( :'(
Two weeks after i have picked the bike up i have it all stripped and have an idea at what way i want to go with the build :)

And out of the blue i get a call from a very old friend mr CLIVE GOSLING...... aka GOSSA ..

After some chit chat and some catch up BEEN SOME 10 YEARS since we had last seen each other Clives asks where i am and if he can come round as he had something for me ?

Two hours later and Clive is at the door with a kit bag in his hand ! He says open it up and inside is all my RACE GEAR . which i given to Clive some years before.
Much chat and lots of TEA later i take Clive to the garage and show him the bike........... FRAME and FORKS ........ His head fell into his hands and he looked gutted he then went onto explain that many years ago i gave him a set of CAMPY GRAPHITES .........
Which he had kept till a few months before are chance meeting and then sold them  :'(

Clive being Clive said give me the frame and forks and he would get it re chromed for me  :)
as it was he took all my stuff what had been listed a ROBINSON and a 79 REDLINE MX2

And what you see is the end result a bike that is near the same as the one i rode for SKYWAY back in 1984  :coolsmiley:

My thanks go out to Clive for doing this for me  :daumenhoch:

bike and parts ................... factory SKYWAY TA frame and forks
skyway graphites 1990 release ( not campys )
                                            GT pro bars
                                            ESP stem
                                            comp 3 tyres
red line single pinch 180"s ................ ( not in the pic )
Oakley b1b"s  (came off CARL ALLFORD"S jmc )
                                            izumi fat siver chain
                                            CW post
                                            kashimax mx seat
dia comp mx 1000 with shimano dx lever
skyway pro pads in black (from my old tool box) with GOLD cooling finns $80
                                            tange bear trap 2 headset
                                            NOS cali-lite frame pad
NOS series 1b haro plate in red/white  and  blue with some sweet stickers on

Once again many thanks Clive and to all the new and old FRIENDS i have made from going on this site :daumenhoch:
you all know who you are :)
