« on: March 11, 2006, 05:15 PM »
i've just bought a red pair of coaster braked tuff II's
the hub detail is a square profile ,
others i've seen are angled
is this a date issue ,where they were made or something else?

I think its cos most are suntour and some are bendix or Shimano

Also, most older tuffs have a 'squared' profile as they are steel then they brought out the ally hub (rounded)

As ORB says, the very early ones have the squarer flanges. I have a pair of early yellow ones just the same

As others have mentioned, the older "squarish" ones are steel flange, and the star shaped are alloy, and have removable cups. The alloy ones came a bit later, but are still proper old school, and seem to be the more desirable (read: cost more) than the earlier ones. I have also seen some matching sets with steel flange coaster rear, and plastic hub front, both were Tuff II's and had similar serial numbers.

The cups come in very handy during cleaning and servicing of the hubs..
these cups can be seen on the right side of this pic:

The angled star shaped ones come in alloy and steel. The pic above is a cassette style steel hub freewheel.
