PRESS RELEASE
BMX EVENT AIMS TO GET MESSAGE INTO HEADS OF RIDERS
A massive BMX event is taking place in Sunderland this weekend, and the organisers are hoping it will provide an opportunity to prevent future injuries of young people in the city.
The BMX Box, in Silksworth, has arranged the BB Jam ’09 alongside Sunderland City Council and Zeal BMX Team Riders. The event, which takes place at Silksworth Skate Park, is expected to attract over 100 riders from across the region. Whilst the emphasis will be on bike skills and showcasing local talent, BMX Box Managing Director Lee Southern is hoping to raise awareness of the importance of wearing a helmet when riding a BMX.
Lee Southern said: “Many local riders use our store, so I’m acutely aware of the amount of BMX accidents that take place through seeing the lads’ injuries. The infuriating thing is that most of these injuries could be prevented by simply wearing a helmet.”
Driven by the amount of non-helmet related injuries Lee has seen since opening his store in April, he was happy to work alongside Sunderland City Council with a view to organising an event to promote helmet wearing.
Lee continues: “Wearing a helmet when riding isn’t a legal requirement, and we don’t want the event to be all about the doom and gloom of what ‘might’ happen. However, we think if we can just gently get the message across that a helmet can save your life, whilst also giving the riders a great show to be part of, it may help to make a big difference.”
