Not on bike bits, but a place i used to work at did zinc, you could have silver(clear) passivate or gold passivate.
S&M have done gold passivate finish on some frames.

Currently work with cadmium plate, very similar to zinc. An interesting one is black nickel, sort of like the black finish you get on allen bolts.

In my mind I can kind of see (amongst many other far darker things) a gun blue finish on raw metal, kinda like a translucent type of thing for a forthcoming build, does anyone know if it can be done , it would have to be durable as it is for a rider.
Whats the matter Kid, don't ya like clowns? Don't we make you laugh? Aint we fukkin funny?

The gun blue finish is black oxide, also known a s cold black. It has to be kept oiled or it oxides (rusts), i did some profile arms with this technique a while back. I blasted the arms first and it gave a matt finish, but if you polish before treatment it gives a shiny finish. Quite difficult to get even over a large area. We have a large tub at work with it in, big enough to do some forks  ;)

you can do your own nickel plating its piece of piss, as are most electroplates, there are loads of good books on this:
