if i understand the serial numbering correctly,is that August 1981 produced?.Looking on Vintagemongoose.com it appears that a goose of this ilk is chromed.

sorry, forgot to ask,how many holes does the rear brake bridge have?apparently, one central caliper hole and one slotted hole either side indicate a full cro-mo frame.

I would try T-CUT first.. I have a set of torker forks which I thought were ready for rechrome - I was surprised at how much rust it actually removed.. use a tooth brush and do not let T-CUT dry out and keep rubbing!  :)

bmxbob - got your PM about this mate, as I said in my reply soz for the delay - been on me hols for 2 weeks  8)

From the pics that certainly looks like nickel and i'd give it a good autosol n elbow grease treatment  :daumenhoch:

You can see on the seat tube near the seat clamp where the nickel has been protected by the seat clamp from oxidisation and is shinier.

Nickel frames were certainly still available from mongoose in 1981. Chrome was being used also but nickel was still an optional finish as well as various paint finishes.

Just for confirmation though I have 2 nickel frames from 1981 - a January and an June so nickel frames were definitely made in 81.

I love 81 with mongoose averything is a big mess  :LolLolLolLol:

Dropouts changed, serial number style changed, forks changed, decals changed etc.  :D I'm not even mentioning mongooe II / 2 again  :-X ;D

As for your forks - they are the correct forks looking at the front on view - a lot of people mistake these forks and cali forks especially when listed on there own on ebay with no decals - they look almost identical from the dropouts and tube thickness but the ones correct for mid 81 through early 83 gusset geese are more rounded "U" shape if you look at 'em upside down whereas the cali ones have a slightly more "V" or "Y" shape to them when looked at them in the same orientation - I've got a side-by-side comparison photo I did a while back explaining this better visually - i'll try and dig it out.

Nice score by the way - what's your plans / colour scheme for the build mate ?

After a quick Autosol  :smitten: session
Please excuse the seat, wheels n tyres  ??? they are just slammed on for the photo.

As for the colour scheme, i have just get mesel some buiscuit skinwall comp3s and was wondering how im gonna incorporate them into a build, maybe this one ?
Can you get buiscuit coloured grips ?

cheers for the info on the forks bobafet, would be good to see a photo of the forks side by side  :)

Sweeeeeeet find Bob :daumenhoch:

Don't forget that the 'goose factory back then had the stamps on the BB done before they welded them to a frame, so especially at this time there will be every combination you can imagine. I've have both chrome and nickel '81 bikes, but an August '81 in nickel is a nice score as it's very late in the day for nickel plate :smitten:

Personally I prefer the nickel finish as it has a soft yellow glow to it rather than the harsh brightness of full chrome plate. Also, it's much more resilient to knocks and scrapes and polishes well. Like John, I've had just about every old 'goose and would always take a pre-'81 in nickel over anything else (with the exception of a Pro-Class of course, but I've got one of those already.....!)

Looks great - don't spend too long polishing it as it's supposed to look like that and you will ride it, not sit there staring at it :angrysoapbox:

What a difference a bit of autosol makes to a dull nickel frame - nicely done sir  :coolsmiley:

As for the "tan comp 3's" you've bought - I have seen these on ebay myself and always wondered how you'd encorporate them into a build hmmmm - custom tan padset maybe   ??? as for tan grips I'm not sure but early geese came with "hunt wilde" transparent grips and "winner's circle" transparent grips most of which knocking around now have a 'tan' kind of colour to them as the sun has done it's work over a 30 year period  :D so they might work  :-\ bit of tan suede over a shabby mx seat as a resto job maybe  :-\

I tend to stick to the standard mongoose accessory colours most of the time (red/blue/yellow/black) that said watch this space for my daughter's custom minigoose coming soon..............
