'87 Haro Master needing serious TLC
«

OK, got my old Haro Master out of the garage today, in the hope that I can restore to its former glory..
Spec is:
1987 Haro Master Frame (one of the pre-production versions I think, without studs on rear dropouts, it has different versions - this was Terry Jenkins Frame at some point I think)
Skyway Streetbeat Forks (bent the Haro ones)
Profile Flight Cranks
1 Original Shimano DX pedal, 1 copy
Diacompe tech 7 levers,990 brakes
Haro Group 1 Stem
Woody Itson bars
SST Seatpost
Hutch Donut seatclamp
odd wheels - front with nice chrome GT sealed hub, rear Araya aero with suzue hub (front I borrowed from Scott Macdonald in 1987, must see if he needs it
newish Haro seat
ACS RL Edge tyres (I think donated by Andy Brown ages and ages and ages ago!)
2 Bully pegs, 1 Fusion
All in all things don't look too bad, I found some spare new gyro cables and I'm going to strip down and re-spray to original yellow/black with chrome rear - but need to know the following:
Where can I get decals for the frame?
Where can I get Orignal Haro forks for this beast?
In fact where is best to look for restoration parts.. is it eBay, or is there somwhere I can get stuff from
Any help appreciated
Cheers
Allyn

Sweet Haro, you can get decals from AJK Bikes
http://ajkbikes.com/catalog/product_info.php'manufacturers_id=12&products_id=93&osCsid=fc0ea6bea050056cb0428f0940bea6db
There is a pair of 86 Forks on ebay now
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110428374128&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT#ht_500wt_1106
I know these are not the correct ones but you will struggle to find 87 - 88 Haro Forks

Paint wise, superbikedan on here does great powdercoat work that is second to none. Thats if you dont want to rattlecan it, depends on how deep your digging.
As for decals, send Del a pm.

Whats with the rear drop outs? The chainstay protection and the vertical tube mount things?

Rear drop outs were one of a kind I think.. it was a pre-production 87 master and the final ones had the daft stud things on them. This one was a bit different. TJ brought it back from Haro in US when he was there, and it go swapped around, I think I got it for a Prolite CC, or maybe that Trickstar that I never really liked!

Yup, this bike has been around a bit.. I've stripped off all the paint now, mostly surface rust but the downtube is quite pitted. I'm not sure I want to spend a lot on re-chroming it, so may rub down nice and smooth and paint (would be yellow there anyway). Its taking me ages to clean all the bits.. just noticed my profile cranks still had the clear film on bits of them which kept them nice and smooth on most parts.
Whats the best way to remove surface rust from chrome? I've seen comments about aluminium foil and water, or fine brass wool, or finest steel wool. I tried some steel wool under the bottom bracket and it comes up pretty good.. whats the best advice to keep things shiny shiny? bear in mind I'm restoring this to ride it, not for any shows.. I don't want to put any NOS parts on if I can help it.. everything works, just needs cleaned and lubed.
Oven cleaner for the rims is it? And whats this about tyres in the dishwasher...?
Any advice appreciated.. I feel like a novice compared to some of you guys who are going to great lengths to restore old bikes..
And I wish I still had my Prolite Craig Campbell.. it was cool, perfect chrome, sky blue tuff's...

Def. TJ's proto Master, remember those rear drops well!
Good to hear you're still riding.

Man blast from the past indeedy allyn, yep was Terrys prototype haro, i bought it direct off him, also entered a comp the next day and still managed to win, haha, remember entering one more and winning before swapping it to you fro a hutch trickstar which i did prefer. (kept slicing my shoes on them rear dropouts.) If i remember there were only two of these in the world, that one and one in a warehouse. I swapped the hutch for a prolite, so was that yours as well? Cos i still actually have that at my moms attic im sure. FRAZ, how r u man, nice of you to remember me or at least my bike lol, we all need to go for some beers, rosyth, dalgetybay, north queensferry connection, we all rocked. Oh allyn i sent you information in mail, you can get the whole bike decaled out and repainted exact colour and parts easy from my buddy john, he runs a bike company and specialises in haro restoration. Everyone who knows me give me a shout

nice to hear from you beefy.. you need to get tht Prolite back up and running.. it was cool.
When you bought this Haro was it yellow or turquoise? Will give you're mate a ring and see about getting it sorted out... it might better to get someone to paint it up properly.. not sure my skills are upto it!!

OK, built my bike back up.
Ended up getting the f&f powdercoated since it wasn't to clever when I did it.
Is not perfect yet, but warrants a few pics of what it looks like with the new paintjob, Del's decals and a bit of TLC
Excuse the pics.. iPhone camera and Scottish weather lighting don't make for a great combination
I'll get some new pegs and I've bought some 48's from someone on here for when I start riding
