Headset fitting problem
« on: August 25, 2009, 07:43 PM »
Tried test fitting an Odyssey pro headset to the Zippo build and the bottom bit is struggling to fit over the raised bit on the steerer tube. I've not tried to persuade it on yet with any force but I'm wondering if this is normal or do I need another headset?

I've have thought about introducing the raised bit to my friend the dremel just to take the edge off and help with the fitment....

Any advice really wlecome. :daumenhoch:

if your going to go the dremmel route,i'd do the race not the forks or get it pressed on with a length of something like scaffold pole.

Robbo, I had the same issue with my 91 haro forks, in the end I used the pole over the stearer tube.

Just make sure you support the steerer underneath rather than having the dropoutsd take the strain

Where did you get the pole from?

I've used a dremel before for fitting a headset, wasnt to proud of that method but it seemed to work.... ::)

get a large shifter and open it so that it rests ontop of the race then tap with hammer turn the forks 90 degrees then tap again keep doing that till its on. You might have to use a bit of force though.

Did your headset come with 2 sizes of Bottom Race?

GT/FSA headsets come with 2 for different sized fork races.  I think to cover normal 1" forks and the oversize 1" forks that some firms brought out in the early - mid 90's before 1 1/8" forks aheadset came out.

It should never be loose (always tight) and if its a NOS Fork then you'll have to do some real twatting to get it on.   Its usually slightly easier (although still hard) the next time you do it.

I use a large adjustable Spanner and a big fooking hammer.  Close the spanner over the forks so that it makes contact with the top of the race and then try and smack it around the race so it goes on evenly.   If it goes on at a steep angle then its even harder to get on.

Good luck!!  :daumenhoch:

What I did was popped it into a pot, boiled it in water for 2 or 3 mins it goes on with very little bashing when its hot.  Make sure you grease the forks well of course!

I'll give that a go, want a practise run before I get the forks powdered.

Thanks for the advice so far. :)

I just used a small square edged file by hand and filed it around the fork, working around as i went, just do a little at a time as you want a tight fit
