1984 Mongoose Expert - Approx Value?
« on: August 20, 2009, 09:03 AM »
I've just bought a totally original 1984 Mongoose Expert which apparently needs just a new chain and back wheel bearings (and a bit of "tlc"). Couple of questions really:

1.) What parts would be common to a Supergoose 3?
2.) What would it roughly be worth if I just restored it?

Cheers in advance :daumenhoch:

"What parts would be common to a Supergoose 3?"

USA spec or UK spec ? I assume UK since it's not actually a supergoose frame  ???

"What would it roughly be worth if I just restored it?"

Depends what condition / parts / level of resto / pads / decals etc. etc.

Need pics of how it is now and details of what you'll be doing to it really - has it got alloy pro class wheels etc. ?  ???

As a ball park figure somewhere round the 350-400 mark but that will change massively depending on condition etc.

Get some pics up !

Sorry, I'm pretty new to this..

UK spec.

I've got a Supergoose 3 but ideally need the headset, pedals, crank to bring it back to original and am seriously struggling to find those parts.

The pics I have of the Mongoose are pretty shight to be honest. Actually collecting it at the wekend so will post up next week. ;)

Ahh OK - so am I right in thinking you have 2 bikes here then ? ??? a Supergoose 3 and an 84 expert ?  :-\

"need the headset, pedals, crank to bring it back to original and am seriously struggling to find those parts"

Shouldn't be too hard mate ? How long have you been looking for them ? They pop up on ebay quite regularly - just got to keep hunting ;) try USA ebay also  :daumenhoch:

Post up a list of what you need in the wanted section on here as well  ;)

Good luck and - don't forget to post some piccies up  :)

Yep. The Supergoose 3 has been "personalised" and I'd like it original - hence why I bought the Expert. So I presume the parts aren't identical?

Pics next week. Cheers for the advice.  8)

You'll be OK for the headset from the expert - the crank you could use but it's probably not a chro-mo one like what came on the super but it'll be goose stamped if it's original to the bike so it'll look OK to the eye  ;)
Pedals should be OK too if they are the original SR jobbies  :)

Finally picked it up. Can someone give it the once over and let me know which parts aren't original (the wheels I suspect). Proper survivor condition!

And a pic of my Supergoose 3 - almost restored to original.

Just moved into a house that needs serious redecoration - hence the pikey backgrounds!

I'll have to have a look as only grabbed a quick couple of pics at lunchtime.

Do you reckon these are original pro-class mx brakes?

I reckon the brakes might be originals , they look ,condition wise original  :-\ and I don't think there was that many people doing repo 'Pro Class' decals BITD :D

I probably will be corrected  :-[

Come on the Goose experts , Bmx bob , jimmyp and of course Jongoose ( might be a couple of days before Mr Fett posts though)

nice survivor  :4_17_5:

wrong parts are :- Wheels, should have pro steel rims.
Seat, should have aero style seat.
Bars, should have mongoose style bars
                              Thats it, i think  :P

get it cleaned up and it wil make a nice rider  :daumenhoch:

Sorry for the late reply mr. shawry25 - but i've been on me hols  :)

Confirming what others have said above and a few other little pointers - if this frame is a USA expert (I only question as I cannot see a seat tube decal in the pic so it could be a cali  :-\ ) then yes the wheels should be pro-steel, the seat should be a viscount aero with the mongoose 'BMX Aero' decal, the bars should be the cheaper chromed steel mongoose bars that look similar in shape to the earlier SS bars if it's an '83 or early '84 then after that standard size pro-class bars would also work (shame the serial No. is scratched off) the grips should be mongoose team grips, and the seat clamp a MX hinged (non dia-compe).

You mentioned previously about moving some parts from this to the supergoose ? If you want to be close to original for your super then if i'm honest mate other than say the pedals and stamped headset/BB I can't really see anything that would be right for the super  :-\ the crank is probably a 165mm steel jobby and although stamped mongoose it ain't the right one for the super and the stem would be a pro-class stem on the super as well if it's a USA spec fat rear tube model.

Couple of nice goose projects there though mate and (if you want them original) with a few tweeks and a bit of part hunting they'll be sweet  :daumenhoch:

I notice you are selling the Expert F&F on ebay now mate - just to let you know, the "Serial No: LS53DL10" you've quoted ain't the serial number - the serial would start with an M3 or M4 for that frame and it would have been were those scratch marks are by the other markings. I suspect the other markings "LS53DL10" are actually a postcode and house number i.e. LS5 3DL house number 10  ;)

Quick google maps search puts it in leeds - maybe you could sell it back to the original owner  :D :LolLolLolLol:

Just thought I'd point it out mate as you may scare some potential bidders off with a dodgy serial number like that quoted  ;)
