Redline Carrera?
« on: March 04, 2006, 09:50 PM »
I'm trying to find out what a Redline Carrera is exactly  :-\

All I can find so far have been pl-20's or rl-20's and I'm dying to get me hands on one, I remember a mate had a white one with red tuffs that was the dogs danglies bitd and I'd like to re-create that very bike.

Are they rare as rocking horse poo or just poo?

Any help appreciated  ;)

Cheers Dordy

So a rarity then? Is that what they're called 'carrera's' or was there numbers and stuff involved aswell, like the pl-20's or something?

The Carrera was Redlines top of the range, off the shelf complete race bike...  like a Leary Turbo, but with a better paint job and quality cranks, and cost big bucks.

It's a PL20 frame and fork set, with flights, brute stem , proline bars, Redline seatpost, Ukai rims, Suntour s/f sealed hubs, Dia Compe MX1000 Brakes, then it all depends on which year...

Good luck finding a frame pad...  if you think Hutch or Leary pads go for big bucks, just wait till one of these gets on ebay

Fantastic Bike.

I've got one I got off Subwax. Not got round to getting it built yet though.

Have a word with Neil, he knows his Redlines, plus he's got 2 others built up. Check 'em out in the museum, they're in there. Flippin lovely bikes.

Cheers

Guy  :)

Top bikes.

I nearly had a white one BITD went to the shop to get it for my Chrimbo present with my dad and it had gone.   :'( :'( :'(

It was in a shop window on the Rayleigh Weir roundabout in about 83/84.

When I saw it it was a total "Waynes World" moment. Beautiful bike it was.

But Stairway denied.

Check the above thread out on Vintage BMX, it's worth a look if you like Redlines.

That should help :daumenhoch:

Which gen Carrera are you looking for, mate?

Also, as faras I am aware, Carrera's only came in chrome - not white.

Dia compe 890's were the choice of brakes on the gen 1 Carrera's, MX-900's on the Carrera II - never used 1000's at all. Pre-bent levers on the gen 1 and tech 3's on the Carrera 2.

Early Carrera's had Araya rims, not Ukais. The later Carrera II had Ukais. Also gen 1 were unsealed hubs, gen 2 sealed.

XC compe pedals for gen 1's, XC II's for Carrera II's.

Any more info needed, drop me a line.

One thing often fogotten when hunting a 1st gen Redline Carrera - the frame does not have a bracket between the bottom chainstays. That will make your search even harder as they are exceptionally rare to find.

Having probs getting a pic on here again, says I'm exceeding something or other  :-\

But, I can assure you that they are completely NOS, never been munched, nibbled or placed anywhere near any kind of chutney.

The box is still up in the loft somewhere, I'll see if I can dig it out  ;D

Cheers Neil, not sure which one to go for, I'd be happy with either to be honest  :D

I'm positive my mate had a white one with red tuffs on it - maybe he had a pl-20 or something and just got some carrera pads for it?

Guy,

That is looking sweet. That stem looks nos, or have refurbed it?

I'm waiting on a few bits before building up a Carrera II, can't wait till its done :daumenhoch:

The stem was not strictly NOS, but looks like it's never been used. I've had the frame & forks re-chromed, not perfect, but better than it was. The bars are as they came from Neil, pretty good already. Just gotta find the rest of the parts. Maybe not totally to spec, but to my taste as usual  ;)

This applies to the one in the link. It's not quite the same.  :-\

Sorry forgot to mention that.

Here is a pic that shows the Carrera II clearer with the chainstay bridge.
