Race bike sizing for a 10yr Old and recommendations
« on: July 21, 2009, 12:19 PM »
A mate of mine has contacted for advice. His son has been to a few sessions at Hayes track and is now smitten. He has been using the clubs bike, but now wants one of his own. He is about 4'6" tall and 9 going on 10yrs old. The brief is, the bike needs to last if possible for a couple of years of growth, so what's the right size ?

In terms of bikes, the budget is £350 max, with £300 preferred for a brand new complete. I was thinking Intense, Redline, Haro. Any other suggestions?

Thanks guys,

San

Been looking at a few for my 2 youngest. The Redlines have the best spec/build quality for the money but a bit more pricey.Maybe an expert size frame 19-19.5 toptube for that height?

Yep just about to type that the Redlines are perfect San, try Stodgy see if he has any left in the locker room  :daumenhoch:

Although if you wanna put him onto a older school bike San, Muffski has a proper looker of a Robinson jnr that he is about to put up, i think its an R gusset one. If i remember he was looking for around £320 for it, very well specced to  :daumenhoch:

First go 2nd hand if i were you just incase they loose interest soon, and if you can find one i'd go for an FMF. they come up cheap all the time, my mate raced one for a season and tbh it was a lovely bike... only picked up for £90 ::) :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch:

Redline or Haro are tops for completes.

DKs aren't bad either at the cheaper end of the scale.

I got my 9yo a Kuwahara Laserlite Expert a year ago and he's got years to go on it still. I got my then 8yo a Kuwahara Junior and now that he's 9 he's still very much at home on it. The Kuwahara Nova series of bikes are incredible value - I'd say get him a Nova Expert.

18" are for 3-6, 7 at a push, after that you must go 20"

Both my boys started on FMF's, good shout Magna. The frames and wheels are top notch, bottom brackets and headsets are the week links on those bikes.
