Finally After 25+ Years... My TA.
« on: June 01, 2009, 06:11 PM »
A TA was always going to be my final build, and after the posty arrived with parts for me this morning, I had to knock it together.
She will be totally stripped at some point for a fresh powder, but for now I just want to spend these summer days out on her.

I spent today cleaning, re-greasing, and setting up the alloy hubbed Tuffs. I had to batter a nasty old freewheel off too, before replacing with a nos Shimano 16t. Not a bad set of wheels for there age. Far from mint, but we'll happy with them.

It's not 100% finished yet as i'm waiting on a set of G.T Pro bars for her, and a pad set at some point soon too.
But it was together, more than well enough to finally get out for a wobble on a TA, after waiting 25+ years.
It amazed me how it handles, and they way the front end is sooo quick and light when turning in...  :)
I know what I'm going to be stumbling about M.K on this year now...
                                                                                                                 :smitten:

I'm not totally sure on a final colour scheme either as far as brakes, cables, saddle, grips etc.
I'm also stumped on which callipers to use for this build, I don't really like 1000's/900's... Any thoughts ?

Thanx to Tone7 and Kendo so far for the f/f and the Strong seat-post clamp. There will be more thanx once the extra parts start rolling in.

What do you rekon then lads? >:D  G.

From the pictures Gav, it don't look like it needs a fresh powder mate.  :4_17_5: :4_17_5:
One build a year, the only way to get it right. No rushing involved.

Looking good Gav :daumenhoch:

If you don't like MX900/1000's what about a DC 1020 or 890.

Thanx lads  :daumenhoch:

I can see me going with 890's again Ian. I must have a fettish for them as all my builds use them as stoppers.
Chromed, polished or black so far. So maybe in a red or blue would be a little different.

Used to have my TA set up with GT Pro bars back in the day..... a great handling set-up fella  :daumenhoch:

Looks great... I'd go with a blue DC 890  :daumenhoch:

Lovely bike...and I would would recommend leaving the colour combo well alone. I always think simple is best on T/As  :yahoo_silent:

The colour scheme is growing on me now.  ;)

I fitted a black 890 onto her earlier, and it just didn't look right.
So I think I'll go with a mirror polished one instead, as the bling pops against the Tuff's and tyres.
I wasn't too sure on how polished and chrome parts would combine with the white frame and forks, but it works nicely.
I think even taking pics loses some of the effect, and it all looks sooo much better in the flesh.

I'm not too sure on the Kashi' Mx either. So I will fit an Aero saddle to it later and see if it changes the look  >:D
Also I'm certain i have some red Dia Compe cables hidden around here somewhere, so will give one a try.
I don't usually do red on any build, but it should add to the build I guess.

I was thinking of having the GT bars powdered at some point.
But now I think that once they have a Skyway bar pad on, and possibly some white doughnuts, it'll bring some touches of the white up from the f/f.
Then, once my Haro Tech plate is fitted, I think that'll be more than enough white  :coolsmiley:

A wise choice of frameset Grem  :4_17_5:

As for brakes , I 'd definately put Shimano Tourneys on it , they're better than 890's any day  ;)

Thanx Tony, and I'm well chuffed with the frame and fork set m8.    :daumenhoch:

As for brakes , I 'd definately put Shimano Tourneys on it , they're better than 890's any day  ;)

She has mirror polished 890's on her at the mo.
I couldn't stand the Mx1000 I put on the rear to get me out for a wobble the other day, and I don't have any Shimano's kicking about the place.
Not a final solution for stopping power as I robbed the 890's off my rider Turbo Leary, but they'll do for now.
Anyhow, I have a new rider TA  >:D

Any idea's on brake blocks lads?  I have a set of black Skyway blocks on her at the mo', but I'm not too keen.
They stop me nicely, but where they're black, from a short distance away it looks like the callipers have no blocks in at all...
I know it's only cosmetic, but are there any blocks similar to say Dia Compe's that have a polished plate that will do the job?
These Skyway pads seem to powder quickly too, is this age or is it just the way they are?  ???
If there is no real alternative to Skyway, would the newer freestyle ones be kool for the build?

Thanx lads,  Gav.  :daumenhoch:
