Welding advise/help?
« on: May 26, 2009, 11:59 AM »
I'd like to have a go a customizing a frame for a start, maybes build up to making my own frame in time, just for fun.  I know very little about what type of welding to try learn.  Used to be TIG? for most 4130 frames bitd I seem to remeber.  Should I do a course or just look for a second hand welder and just try pick it up that way?  Any one else had a go at this?

Cheers.

Tig welding course is the way  ;) But if u have never welded before learning 2 gas weld first is the way . Cos if u can't master that u will never master Tig welding as its an art form  ::) Welding ally with Tig is oh so difficult. I can Tig weld but it is oh so hard work  :daumenhoch: Pics of my Stainless Tig welding below. My only prob is no access 2 the right equipment 2 do it.  :'(

Yes Animal I have done some oxy acetylene welding before, but it was years ago - I remember it being tricky but I got some nice beeds after some practice + I managed to fabricate a small simple sort of vice thing.  It was part of a college course.  I can imagine aluminium must melt like butter - don't think I would feel safe on an aluminium bike anyways ;D

i did an evening welding course  a few years back. arc, mig, tig, oxy acetylene cutting. bit of the old school methods some of it, as for arc- prehistoric.
 steady nerves are a must.

nice welding by the way.

Penitration, Penitration, Penitration

I might actually build a bike this year instead of just hoarding parts :)
