Nope haven't seen it before but it looks similar to the effect you can get using oxalic acid and given that oxalic is cheaper and you can get from ebay that's what I'm trying next...have a google

Try this:
These guts not being anything special I didnt give them the proper polish treatment, the way they look in the after pics are literally how I pulled them out of the vinegar with just a quick rinse and wipe dry.
As you can see, its worked. 24 hours in the Sarsons and the rust just fell off. It was all collected as little flakes in the bottom of the container, and anything that remained in the guts just wiped off clean.
Best bit is the vinegar only costs £1.40 for a big jar at Tesco.
