Had some seat guts in need of some TLC, so I set about removing the rust...........

........started with a coke bath for them

Chucked them in a cup with half a can of coke and left them for 24 hours (drank the other half of the coke

)

Wasn't that thrilled with the results though

..... decided more ation was needed

.....so next up was going to be a coating in HP sauce - yum !

..........BUT....... I found a bottle of tesco's lemon juice in the fridge...hmmmmmmm

....I Had read about the powers of citric acid on rust before so decided to give it a go

.......Much happier with the results this time

......Finally gave everything a very quick rub down with some Autosol....

.....and bingo, lemon fresh shiney seat guts

Hi Andy - yes mate another 24 hours did the job

I don't know if the coke played any part in this process - maybe it broke things down a little for the lemon juice to do it's work but I doubt it did much.
To be honest, next time I do something similar i'll skip the coke proess and go straight to the lemon juice

Excellent work. I have a set of rusty Kashi aero guts that I thought were beyond salvation, but maybe this might do the trick.

Gonna give it a go tomorrow...

you get so much satifaction outta doing it this way too rather than buying nos stuff all the while.
i just polished some old kashi seat guts up and they come up like chrome.

don't know if this is common knowledge but you can use OXALIC ACID to get rid of rust on just about every thing , its wood bleach amongst other uses buy it in crystals mix with water and dip away , looking at seat guts would probably been a couple of hour soak, this stuff is unreal just eats the rust dip a frame and it wont touch the decals either

, don't taste as good as lemon coke though

My seat guts are in a far worse condition than yours, and have decided to try vinegar to remove the rust. The vinegar I have bought is a pickling type and therefore more acidic than regular sarsons. It comes in at 6% acidity, and I cant see the lemon juice being more acidic than that (correct me if wrong).

Being that the effectiveness of the lemon juice is based around the acidity, I think vinegar should work just as well.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Nice work there you can't beat getting your bad guts sorted.
I thought these kashi guts were beyond redemption but a bit of time and they turned out ok.

Kashi guts are becoming a little more sought after now as well especially with the new one's available minus the guts.

Do all Kashimax guts have that stamp on the front?

Mine have gone in the vinegar and early results look good. Its only been in an hour or so, but already looking shinier.

Will fish them out tomorrow and report back with pics.

I've got another set to do myself so I'll be interested to see how the vinegar works out versus the lemon juice

Some of them have K.S.M then a long patent number like these . They also come with just K.S.M stamped bigger than the one's pictured.

Maybe someone got too handy with the sisal mop at some point. There is another distinctive thing about id-ing kashi guts though. The inner part where your bolt goes through is re-enforced like the one's at the begining. They also have a tab at the top to keep the seatpost in place. I have only ever seen this on kashimax and am unawhere if any other manufacterer did it. The kashi seats are definately a quality item and were built to last. So were the guts.
Here are a couple of pics. The 1st pic is of the other kind of stamp that i have seen.
The 2nd one is of the rear of the kashi guts with the re-enforced part and the tab i was talking about.

Well I now know mine arent Kashi guts despite the fact I got them on an old Kashi seat. Still I only paid a fiver all in for it, so not too disappointed. Them not being anything special I didnt give them the proper polish treatment, the way they look in the after pics are literally how I pulled them out of the vinegar with just a quick rinse and wipe dry.

As you can see, its worked. 24 hours in the Sarsons and the rust just fell off. It was all collected as little flakes in the bottom of the container, and anything that remained in the guts just wiped off clean.

Best bit is the vinegar only costs £1.40 for a big jar at Tesco.
