Penrith BMX Track
« on: May 04, 2009, 08:13 PM »
Was in Penrith at the weekend so I thought I'd take a look at the old track.  I was dissapointed to find that very little remains, it even looks like the jumps have been flattened.

Anyway, here are the pics of what is essentially an unrecognisable track- there isn't much to see:

start hill:

old tyre marking track edge (I think this was the straight before the rhythm section)

view from where the large tabletop was

I said there wasn't much to see.

Wow I spent loads of time at that track probs 97ish, transitions had been dug into the jumps by a local (Justin) and some more jumps had been built, Justin snapped his leg real bad there and not long after I took a nasty spill there and had 3 months off work. I was down there a few months ago but just couldn't find it, I remember going up a thin loning to the track,

Great to see the pics but looks nowt like it did even in the 90's.

Thanks for posting

Anyone know what year it was built as in the 90's I found it hard to believe that we never discovered it in the 80's as it looked like it had been an awesome track in its day.

I started racing there in 1985 and I beleive the track had been there for a good few years before that.

I was told it had a slighlty different layout before I started racing there and I recall that it was changed (for a 3rd time?) in 86/87 ish.

Only ever raced there once , mainly went down just for the day in the school hols in about "82"  and played about on the quarter pipe
there would be me , eddie , pepi , ewan, john No 1 (no not mr smooth )and i think renny went and a couple of others
we would get the train to lancaster and then on to morcambe and then bike up to pontins, happy days.
and i think i only raced a couple of times at penrith
and once at Hamonds but least said about that track the better [ fooking councils]  :yahoo_silent:

The council flatterned it about 5 or 6 years ago..........tossers!

It was built in the very early 80s.

Macky, I met you back in 97. I worked with Graham and the lads from oasis at the time.

Justin who you mentioned works in KMB as a michanic, cant get him near a BMX now tho!

YES!!

I'm down in Ulverston (an hour's drive) but if the track was there I'd definately use it.... so that means I'd be duty bound to get involved in getting it back up and running.  Count me in.

Small world  :coolsmiley: not suprised about justin that was a nasty break, I remember his leg pointing in a direction it was never meant to, think he lost his job too. Do you know what graham is up to now? graham carted me to the hosipital after my spill at the track.

Jimmy,

Penrith club has reformed (Me, Gary, Jonny and Andrew) we are talking to the council about getting some land but they very slow to deal with. Old track site is earmarked for housing!

The bmx track in carlisle is still there although not the best track its something to ride if racings your bag.
Last time I was there it looked like the council had taken the tops of the jumps.
