old fat git starting again
« on: April 17, 2009, 05:25 PM »
Hi all,

right I'm 39 years old now, havnt riden a bmx for 20 years or so, I weigh 15 stone and havnt a clue what to buy or look for.

Last bike was an 84 gt pro performer, i'm guessing cromo is the way to go (never have trusted ally).

Idealy the new bike will be riden on a half pipe and will have to take a knock or two.

any ideas

Can of worms time...but honest.

You'll get good advice on here.  It's easy to be seduced by the allure of OS bikes, but not all of them will be as you remember them.  You're better off getting a bike, for who you are and how you ride now...

Old School: look great, not particularly strong, weak brakes, generally expensive to buy.

Mid School: Much stronger, better brakes, some weigh about 10,000,000 tons though...the odd bargain out there

New School: General consensus is a good ride, and easier to ride, can be expensive for custom builds and to the uninitiated it can be sometimes hard to see where the money was spent (just my opinion)...

I'd speak with stodgy too, get a bike that's right for you, rather than getting one you hope might be right for you.

Ray.

yeah have to admit was looking at a gt performer on e-bay , frame forks for 230-ish (bought my one new for 170 in the 80's

have some reservations about 20+ years of rust on the inside of the frame ect tho ................................ what with being a fat lump now  ;)

would love another GT tho, they used to be kinda hevey but the scale suited me, hated haros as the back end walways felt short (just me being odd), the mid school GT ones with the bent top tube... any good? as ive seen a few of these cheap (kinda looks like a disater fall frame wise but aparently they looked like this new.
basicly im just after something cheap, good strong headset (my major worry with my weight) and not too cramped to ride.

any ideas guys ?

Welcome, so you fat, old & used to ride a GT Performer  ???

Do you know Pete Quad  ???

Yes as others have said get a new skool, loads about, might even be worth looking at a good quality second hand one, I know SteveB was selling a good one the other week, which just needed a new paint job  8)

Yep, stick to mid/new school for a rider, although you'll have to get used to a short rear end on newer frames, most are in the 13" to 14" range now and most o/s were over 15"!
Do you grovel to your master? Do you beg like a dog?

I can recommend Subrosa bikes.  Good value and Stodgy can help.

Get a good bike to ride and you wont look back.

Speak to Stodgy, he'll do you a deal on a sensible mid range complete bike from a current manufacturer to get you started. If you fall in love all over again, then you can start adding posh kit to it  ;)

And don't worry, 15 stone ain't that heavy compared to some of us - me included...   Modern headsets and the like are all pretty good - they don't explode like they used to.

Welcome back    :daumenhoch:

Call anytime Trev - loads of completes in stock and access to everything else on sale if I haven't got it in.

Don't go for a new school GT though... they are not the brand they used to be...
