Top 5/10 Most Desirable Old School Rides
« on: April 15, 2009, 11:26 AM »
OK, I'm in the middle of my first build and I'm already thinking of what is next (old school rider so I can race I think). But it got me to thinking.......................

Back in the day I had a Piranha (don't laugh!) but always wanted a chrome Kuwahara, hence my current build. But what would you say, generally speaking, the top ten most desirable rides were "back in the day", and I guess my day was up to about 1986 (I'm 35!).

I'm guessing the old favourites would be a Harry Leary Turbo, PK Ripper, Skyway TA etc - lovely bikes one and all but where do you think a Laserlite fits in with these and what about all the Mongooses and Redlines my old friends used to ride.

Would be interested to see some lists of most desirable rides from some of the more common makes that I might recognise! I'm sure I knew them all intimately when I was 10 but the old brain's gone fuzzy now!

Personal preference really, but if I got back into collecting again I would probably want the following in there:

factory flyer blue SE Racing PK Ripper
chrome Skyway TA
black chrome Mongoose Pro Class
smoke chrome Harry Leary Turbo
chrome S&M Challenger

Skyway T/A I think has to be in an old schooler's collection as it was just the best out there! it was also a great all rounder for racing and freestyling, im surprised that RideBMX has taken it and put it in their Icon section as it just changed everything! another bike i think that has to be in there is the PK Ripper as it was the first alliminuim frame + forks and were just the daddy at that time for racing :smitten:

Great thread - as a Mongoose rider BITD I always wanted a Team Mongoose until the Pro-class came out, so....

1 - Team Mongoose (got)  :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

2 - Pro-class (got x2!) :smitten:

3 - Haro Freestyler Gen1 (had, sold and got a POS)  >:D

4 - GT Eddie Fiola flying banana (on my "to do" list)  :-\
Ummm......
5 - Skyway TA (had, rode, didn't like it so sold it)

Bit controversial on the TA, and an odd choice on the 1 & 2, but if you rode 'Gooses like a lot of us did, you wanted the top of the range but could never afford one and only saw them in magazines :2funny:

Lots of nice bikes listed so far. All of my most desired bikes hark back to when I had my BMX and pretty much what Merry Cycles in Bournemouth had to offer between 1981 and 1985!!

1. Kuwahara - not sure which model my mate had - I think it was a Nova but on the basis I'm not sure I bought a Laserlite. His was uber exclusive and the envy of the neighbourhood

2. Supergoose 1 or 2 - one of the ones with the gusseted frame. Again, a guy I knew called Lee Hemmings (who also did motocross) had one and it was very cool indeed

3. Diamond Back Silver Streak - by far the best looking bike I had seen!

4. Redline - with a white frame and red parts/graphics. Again, not sure what model my mate had but it was fantastic

5. Torker - Merry Cycles had a couple and they always seemed to be really exclusive with the double frame bars

I'd also like a Team Mongoose exactly like the one above, and I can't remember the Pro Class, but they look bloody amazing!!! Might be my next build perhaps...........................but this time a rider rather than a show bike!

1> GT Pro Series (fortunately had two of em and never really wanted anything else except the bike below)
2> Hutch Hollywood in Baby Blue with chrome bits (a kid I raced with had a pink and blue one - he'd bring both to Nationals and I'd want to beat him for that, and I did LOL)
3> GT Performer (couldn't get Performers in South Africa... Candy Red Eddie Fiola with Black Skyways & White tyres, I did freestyle on my race bikes...)
4> Kuwahara Laserlite in White
5> GHP Pro

better get busy...

As a kid i always wanted....

1... Hutch

2... JMC

3... DB HLT

4... MRD

5... Rickman

All would have been racers rather than freestylers, and out of that lot i've only ever owned a Hutch which another RAD member now owns.
One build a year, the only way to get it right. No rushing involved.

If I was purely out to name my top five bikes i'd have to say:

1) TA - Iconic

2) Loopy Ripper

3) Gen 1 Freestyler

4) Goose Cali

5) Hutch Pro Star

next 5 would be something like:

Quadangle

Nice early Redline

Hutch Trickstar

Ammaco Freestyler

Rebel Freestyler  ;)

don't really desire any old school bikes now, but probably would have been:

1. Skyway TA
2. Super Tuff Burner MkII
3. Skyway streetbeat in orange or green        CW freestyle
4. Haro freestyler, 80s, not fussed on which actual one
5. CW freestyle

but now I desire most:

1. Skyway TA Dirt Bros rep
2. Haro Sport Bashguard 91
3. DK General Lee

the bikes I own are the ones I most desire.
